Shaky Foundations

GINA’s POV

“Guess what, Jerry! The doctor says my eggs are still viable and that they can still make babies,” I beamed happily on my way out of the doctor’s office, my heart leaping with joy as I shared the news with my husband whom I had just called.

“Oh. Really?” He didn’t sound as excited as I had expected, and it instantly dulled my excitement a bit.

“Yes. She said we can commence the egg extraction and test tube process as soon as I am ready after I take some necessary injections. I am so happy, honestly,” I rambled on and on about how I truly felt at that moment, and I was so over the moon.

Why wouldn’t I be?

Jerry and I have been married for four years now, and I have not had a child since then. I have tried so many procedures, visited fertility clinics and hospitals for the past two years when it became rather an issue for me, and this is the most exhilarating news I have heard in a while.

“I am in front of the hospital already,” he suddenly announced, cutting me off, and I hastened my steps instantly as I ended the call and hurried, my heels clicking softly against the tiles as my heart began to beat for some reason I knew not.

I had asked him to pick me up instead of my chauffeur so that it could be a wonderful time to share the news, and I had not expected him to arrive so fast.

Sighting the black sleek Benz as I stepped out of the hospital’s main doors, I hurried to it, opened the door, and slipped into the seat beside him.

“What is wrong, Jerry?” I couldn’t help but ask as I pulled the seat belt over my chest and strapped it.

“What is wrong?” His voice held a cold surprise, as he stepped on the accelerator and drove off instantly.

“You don’t sound so good. I told you we might be having a baby soon, but you don’t sound as excited,” I expressed my concerns.

“It is not like that, Gina,” his voice remained unexciting still, “I just feel a little tense, you know? It’s not our second or third rodeo. I feel like you should stop trying now. We are very okay without kids,” he sounded decisive and I stared at him as I felt something sink inside my chest because this was not what I had imagined. Not even close.

“I know right. Getting disappointed again and again is exhausting,” I hung my head sadly, my eyes fixed on my flowered skirt, my heart breaking at the defeat in his voice.

But still, I straightened and threw a determined gaze at him, “I think this is the last time, Jerry. The doctor assured me that we will have our child, and I am positive that we will.”

“Alright. If you say so,” he doesn’t sound too impressed, and that alone made every happiness that was initially in me vanish. I really wish he would be encouraged rather than dispirited.

As Jerry drove and we remained in silence, I turned away from him as I let my thoughts drift, if only to protect myself from the weight of his indifference, my mind flashing back to the first time we met four years ago.

I had been so depressed and sad for months after I lost my dad, and it was so hard to even do anything aside from keeping the legacy of the company he left me. When I tried so hard to get over it, I had drowned myself in work because it was so hard to keep living with the cruel fact that I now had no one.

My stepmother and half-brother, who took over the remaining assets he had not yet willed were a constant plague in my life, and it was so sad that he had worked all his life only for a strange woman and her child to take them all away.

Gianna, my college friend and roommate, was so tired of me being busy, exhausted, and sad all the time when she came to town, and she set me up on a date with Jerry, who was a colleague of hers. I wasn’t interested at all the first time we met, but she kept encouraging me to meet him a few more times.

He was such a kind and sweet gentleman then who did everything to make my life easier and perfect, that I didn’t realize when I fell for him. We dated for a few months despite my busy schedule and we got married in a year. He was almost perfect.

It has been four years now, and all I could say was that he had been constantly patient and calm with me even though I have been unable to conceive. It had stressed me out so much because I wanted to give him a child of his own and to be honest, I was always paranoid whenever we went out and we saw a couple with their kids.

I reduced my workload at the company over the years because I heard stress could aid infertility, and started visiting so many fertility clinics in my third year when I realized that I was still not pregnant even when they said I was medically fit.

I was exhausted.

“We are home,” Jerry’s voice jolted me out of my reverie, and I quickly mumbled an okay, before stepping out after he parked in the garage.

Looking up, Hilary was standing in front of our house and waiting with the biggest smile already, like she knew the perfect time we would be home. She was a very attractive woman with stunning red hair, and mesmerizing big green eyes, and was my closest childhood friend. And she was also my secretary.

I recruited her for the position after I took over my dad’s company, because she had been unable to get a good job for a while. She left after we finished high school for about five years to go and study, and we didn’t see each other again, until we reconnected. It was when she told me about how her dad’s company went under, and that they had to run away to save face.

From then till now, she has been my biggest supporter and confidant.

“Welcome back, Gee, congratulations to you,” she flashed a very warm smile at me, as she stretched her hand and clasped me in her embrace.

“What?” I looked confused, my eyes searching hers as she separated from me.

“You are going to have a baby soon,” she chimed happily.

“Wait. How do you know?” I chuckled, because I had not told her yet.

Hilary let out a laugh, “You had an appointment with the doctor today, and obviously there is no way the tests would not come out great!” She sounded so excited.

“Ohhh,” I laughed, “Thank you so much,” my eyes softened with so much giddiness, my mood improving instantly because she could understand my excitement and was so positive about it.

“I’m so glad you can finally be happy,” she kissed my cheek, and so much happiness flooded my heart.

“Thank you so much, Hill,” I was moved to tears as I took her right hand in mine, my heart brimming with gratitude as I smiled, “Thank you so much.”

“My pleasure,” she winked at me as we made our way into the living room, “I just came to check up on you. I will be returning to the company soon,” she said as she made her way to the kitchen.

“That’s so sweet of you,” I smiled, and then turned to look at Jerry who was coming behind us and had been so silent during our entire conversation.

“You see. We are definitely having a baby,” I grinned with a whisper, and he smiled, finally relieving my worry.

As I slouched on one of the plush sofas in the living room, feeling a little tired to even proceed to the stairs, Hilary came back with a glass blend of vegetable juice, and honestly, I was grateful. She always knew the right time when I needed these things.

“You are the best, Hill,” I pouted affectionately, as I emptied the contents in three gulps.

“Yes I am,” she winked, taking the glass from me, “You look tired,” she tilted her head, her eyes observing me.

“Yes I am,” I sighed.

“Maybe you should go upstairs and take a rest,” she suggested and my heart melted.

“You are so perfect, Hill. What can I do without you,” I rose to my feet and she flashed a smile at me, while reminding me to take my vitamins before I slept.

‘Gosh. She knew everything about me,’ I thought to myself, grateful that she really was there for me.

I made my way upstairs and to the bedroom, and barely managed to change out of my clothes before I collapsed on the bed. I have had a long day already, and I was overwhelmed with so many mixed feelings at that moment.

I was trying to catch some sleep, but I noticed that I was unable to even after five minutes had passed because I was having a bad headache. Just as I stepped out of my bed to get a painkiller so that I would be relieved, I felt so dizzy after taking a few steps.

Making my way downstairs instantly to go and get a glass of milk from the kitchen, I noticed that everywhere was silent which made me wonder where Jerry was, and if he had also returned to work.

Concluding that both Jerry and Hillary must have left, I strode casually to the kitchen, taking slow steps because I was still dizzy, but I soon started hearing some kind of noises the closer I got.

My heart skipped first, and I wondered what it was that I was hearing, but the closer I took my hesitant steps, the more I heard sounds that made my heart drop. I was very sure that I was not delusional, but it sounded exactly like what I thought it was. Moans.

“Jerry? Hill?” I called, my heart thumping with fear, mixed thoughts, and confusion, the more I moved closer to where I was hearing it from. The corner where the wine cellar was located. My head was colliding with the questions that were stemming from deep within me.

“Jerry? Hill?” I called again, and almost immediately the sounds I was hearing stopped. Then I heard some ruffles and then Hilary’s voice, just slightly above a whisper.

And suddenly, as I popped my head to the right, telling myself to breathe, I saw Jerry, trying to pick a wine from the rack, while Hilary was holding her phone to her tight ear, murmuring something about being on her way. Both looked restless as their eyes turned to look at me simultaneously, and the tension in the air was high. The smell in the air too was intense.

‘What on earth was going on?’
