We didn't get long.

A hard knock on the door pulled us both out of the brief quiet. Gunnar was on his feet before I fully sat up, already reaching for his sword. The bond snapped tight and alert between us. I dragged the least-destroyed shirt I could find over my head and ignored the way the fabric stuck to drying blood on my scales.

Matthías's voice came through the wood, low and controlled.

"It's me. We've got a problem that can't wait."

Gunnar unbarred the door. Matthías stepped inside,

I saw him through the breach for a moment — silver hair bright with other people's blood, eyes locked on me with cold recognition. He wasn't throwing himself into the meat grinder at the doors. He was directing. Letting the first waves spend themselves against us while he waited for the exact moment our line thinned. The breach widened further. More wolves forced through. The inner hall began to take the overflow of the fight. Wounded who couldn't move fast enough were dragged farther back by Merja's people. Tables were overturned for cover. The carefully ordered defense of the keep dissolved into a series of brutal, room-by-room struggles. Matthías held the entrance to the main hall with a knot of the steadiest warriors, injured leg braced, sword work still short and efficient. Sunna appeared on my left long enough to put a dagger into a Blackpine throat, then vanished again toward the eastern stairs where Nina was still dealing with probes against the inner wall. The bond flared

The next impact on the inner doors split the crack into a jagged seam. Splinters sprayed inward. One of the warriors bracing the left side took a long shard across the cheek and didn't even wipe the blood away. The ram struck again, timed with a low, collective shove from the wolves outside. The seam widened. For the first time I could see movement through the gap — a flash of fur, the glint of a blade, the sick green glow of elder magic. "Hold!" Gunnar roared. The sealed bond between us flared wide open. I had felt it before — the shared strength, the way pain and intention moved both ways — but under this kind of pressure the connection showed its deeper edges. It wasn't just a channel for power. It was a second set of senses. I felt the exact strain in Gunnar's wounded shoulder as he threw his weight against the bracing timber. I felt the controlled violence in his pulse when he calculated how long the doors had left. In return he felt the heavy drag of the power-cost still si

The scraping against the inner doors grew louder. It wasn't the wild battering of a desperate charge. It was measured. Deliberate. The sound of metal tools working at the seams and hinges, backed by the low, constant pressure of bodies pushing in rhythm. Jakob had shifted from testing our strength to trying to take the keep apart piece by piece. Gunnar issued orders as we climbed back up from the stores. No shouting. Just clear, hard instructions that moved through the inner keep like cold water. "Double the braces on every inner door. Move the heaviest crates and tables against them. Archers on the inner wall walks — if they breach, I want the first ones through turned into corpses before they clear the threshold. Matthías, you have the main hall and the wounded. No one enters or leaves without being seen by at least two people you trust." Matthías gave a short nod and limped off, already calling names. Sunna stayed with us. "What about Lasse?" "Leave him where he is for now,"

Matthías stepped inside, glanced once at the state of us, and decided not to comment. His injured leg was still taking less weight than it should, but his eyes were sharp. "One of the supply runners is missing," he said. "Name's Lasse. Young. Been with the keep for two years. He was assigned to the lower stores during the first push. No one has seen him since the postern opened." Gunnar's expression didn't change, but the bond went cold. "Anyone else unaccounted for?" "Not yet. I've got people doing a quiet head co

Gunnar looked at me. Really looked. The bond carried the assessment he didn't speak out loud: the tremor in my hands, the gray edge to my vision that hadn't fully cleared, the way I was holding my left arm close to my body. "You're done pulling for a while," he said quietly. "I can still fight." "I know. That's not what I said." He steered me out of the main hall without making it obvious. A short side corridor led to the small chamber we had been using as our quarters since the first night I arrived. The door closed behind us. The bar dropped into place. For a moment we just stood there, breathing. Then the adrenaline started to crash, and everything the bond had been holding back hit at once. Gunnar's mouth found mine, hard and urgent. There was nothing polished about it. Teeth clicked. His hands gripped my hips hard enough to bruise, pulling me against him like he needed proof I was still solid. I kissed him back with the same desperation, fingers digging into the ruin

The reinforced wedge hit the gate like a living battering ram. Green light crawled over the front rank of enemy wolves, knitting wounds as fast as we could make them. The elders stayed protected in the center, hands raised, feeding the magic in steady pulses. Our line bent. For a few ugly minutes it looked like it might break completely. Then Matthías did something reckless and necessary. He pulled six of the steadiest Ironfang warriors off the postern defense, formed them into a tight spearhead, and drove straight into the side of Jakob's wedge. It wasn't elegant. It was ugly, close, and effective. The green light faltered where the formation broke. Gunnar and I hit the same point from the front a heartbeat later. The sealed bond made the timing clean. We didn't need to shout. The wedge collapsed into a brutal melee. It bought us time. Not much. Just enough. Gunnar's voice cut across the courtyard. "Fall back to the inner line! Controlled retreat! Get the wounded behind
