Chapter 2

Author: White Sand
The one-man show that I'd been performing for more than 20 years finally came to an end right then and there.

I knew that I wasn't going to get a reply to that message I'd just sent. After all, the only two people whom I knew would always stand by me forever had already left this world a long time ago.

It was just as Cherie often told her friends.

"Victor can never leave me. My parents are so good to him, and he also said that he doesn't have anyone else aside from me."

She was right. She remembered everything. I had indeed treated her as the only person I had left in this world.

But she'd forgotten that those words were originally a promise and a testament to my love for her. Now, they had simply become a way for her to mock me.

When Mom and Dad first passed away, Cherie was the first person who found me. She stayed by my side and kept a silent vigil all night long amidst the carnage of that horrific car accident. And when I finally collapsed, she used her slender frame to carry me on her back, step by step, all the way home under the starry sky.

Later on, no matter how often I painted the night sky, there was no canvas I could produce that could ever rival the beauty of that night.

Perhaps I should have stopped gazing upward like that a long time ago.

I lowered my head and quietly booked a plane ticket.

Even now, I still wanted one last look at the person whom I'd spent a majority of my life chasing. I wanted to see exactly when I had become a burden she was desperate to shake off.

At the very least, I wanted to know why she was forcing me to pave the way for someone else's life with my own death.

…

"Victor, the target is right here."

The new system gave me one final bit of help before I left the city. It granted my wish and allowed me to run into Cherie just outside her office building.

However, Cherie didn't notice me. She was still chatting with her companion, and the conversation topic had somehow gradually shifted to me.

Her best friend, Erica Nolan, asked, "So, have you finally decided to marry your childhood sweetheart, Victor Pearson? When is the wedding going to be? You're going to have to invite a huge crowd to make it as lively an affair as possible! You know, I haven't really seen you smile much ever since Max Wheeler passed away—"

"Don't use him to test me like that," Cherie said with a frown, pressing her lips into a thin, displeased line. "I will never forget him."

Erica paused for a moment. Then, she sneered as her expression hardened.

"You had better not forget him. Max stood by you so faithfully all those years, and he even lost his life because he loved you so much. And where were you when he needed you? Tending to your jealous childhood sweetheart on that snowy, blizzardy day.

"You will always owe him, Cherie!"

Cherie went silent.

I hid behind the wall, quietly listening to everything they said.

So, his name was Max Wheeler.

I suddenly recalled the system telling me that he was Cherie's true love, and that he was also going to be the one taking over my body.

Apparently, Max had been tied to a system too, and he was also playing a character whose mission was to confess and marry the target, Cherie. However, he had died after failing his mission, and now, his soul was parasitically attached to me, waiting to be reborn.

It was precisely because Cherie had colluded with my original System to implant his soul inside me that my original System had malfunctioned and collapsed.

I watched with a heavy heart as Cherie and Erica walked away, still chatting with each other. I then gazed up into the bright, blue sky and felt a truly visceral sense of solitary despair for the first time ever.

I wondered how Cherie was feeling now.

From what I'd heard, she didn't defend me in front of Erica. She just remained silent, lost in the memories of the man she'd lost.

I supposed she was hoping that I would die soon.

I remembered that snowy day from three years ago. It wasn't just the heaviest snowfall that I'd ever seen. It was also the day that I'd come the closest to death.

"What does your loving me have anything to do with me?" I demanded, standing my ground as Cherie cornered me at my doorway. My face was devoid of emotion. "The corpse you're obsessed with is right there in your hands, isn't it? Feel free to hug him and announce it to the whole world!""But he's not you!" Cherie exclaimed, reaching out and grabbing my hand through the gap in the door. She refused to let go even as the door slammed into her arm and turned the skin red.She kept repeating stubbornly, "It's you I love, Victor Pearson! You! The person now standing in front of me…"If that was the case, then why did she try to strip me of my life just to make way for somebody else? Did she think that I was nothing but a velvet box for a watch, only meant to be used as packaging and later discarded or swapped out if she didn't like it?"You disgust me," I said, shoving her away from my door with all my might.Cherie burst into tears. She crouched on the steps outside with her head in h

I had grown to fear the silence, and I didn't dare to linger in one place for far too long. After all, the days spent waiting for someone to turn back to me had been truly agonizing. When summer came around, I bumped into Cherie again. She had made an appearance at an art exhibition—somewhere she swore she wouldn't be caught dead in the past. Her eyes were fixed intently on an unfinished piece, signed "Starry Sky", and she looked particularly downcast as she stared at the painting.I had once treasured that piece, but once the memories within it were no longer worth revisiting, I had discarded it in the blink of an eye."Victor…"I watched Cherie caress the frame of the painting. Then, I summoned the exhibition curator, intending to buy the work back immediately. The curator studied my face for a long time, looking rather puzzled and troubled. Finally, he said, "Sir, this painting is not for sale. It represents the memories of someone who has already passed away.""Treating some

Eventually, I found myself unable to leave the bed.Day after day, I watched the green buds emerge on the tree branches outside my window. On rare occasions, I would even spot a few birds perched in the trees."Can you find me a paintbrush?" I asked, looking imploringly at the woman, who, for reasons unbeknownst to me, always lingered by my bedside. I was itching to touch vibrant paint colors again. However, I didn't know who this woman was. I just knew she was always there every time I opened my eyes. She told me her name was Cherie Blackstone, and she often gazed at me with sorrowful eyes, telling me I'd forgotten many important things.I didn't believe her.My mind was solely occupied with paintings, and I told her over and over again that I had no childhood sweetheart whatsoever."If there really was someone who cared about me, then why hasn't anyone come to visit me yet?" I asked her.As she continued droning on endlessly about past events again, I began losing my patie

However, no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't find my girlfriend's number. My fingers trembled as anxiety clawed at my chest. "No… Maybe I shouldn't tell her… If she found out about it, she'd definitely be heartbroken…""Why are you talking as though you're going to die?" Cherie said, spilling water on the floor as the glass wobbled in her hand.I looked at her with a strange expression and tried to shoo her out of the room once again."What are you still doing here? I already told you that I have a girlfriend!""Is your girlfriend good to you?" Cherie suddenly asked, cutting me off. She lowered her eyes, and I thought I saw her hand trembling against my blanket."Of course she's good to me," I said, my face lighting up the moment I got to talk about her. I began recounting everything she did for me with a sort of pride, as though showing her off to the world. "She told me from a young age that we were going to get married someday. I've known her since the day she was b

I relied on my hazy memories and eventually made my way home. However, I hadn't expected Cherie to show up at my doorstep with more people behind her less than three hours later.I must have forgotten to shut the door tightly behind me. She walked right in without any obstruction at all."What are you doing here?" I asked warily, hiding behind the bedroom door. "Don't tell me you don't know what you've done!" she yelled back in a cold, icy voice. She'd clearly come prepared. The person next to her looked somewhat familiar. I vaguely recalled a mean-spirited woman who had repeatedly belittled my paintings and dismissed them as worthless. In any case, they did not come in peace.I hurriedly slammed the room door behind me, pressed all my weight against it, and yelled in warning. "I don't know what I did, but that's still no reason for you to barge into my home just like that! And I've already explained to you that you're not my girlfriend!"I don't know if you got the wrong perso

One of Cherie's figures was dim, and the other was as bright as day. It was just a pity that true feelings were always so fleeting and temporary.I moved forward through time, my gaze fixed on the two figures walking side by side, completely inseparable. Even as the scene before me grew sharper, my mind just kept getting increasingly hazy.I ran. I ran past all the lights and the shadows, past the starry skies that defied all paintings, and past that single sheet of photo paper bearing a childish vow.I never looked back. When I woke up again, my memory began to fade. The first thing I forgot was Cherie's name. All I remembered was that I had a girlfriend, and she was my childhood sweetheart. Even though she was often very busy, our relationship had always been strong, and we'd recently begun discussing marriage. I loved my girlfriend very much. That was why when a stranger suddenly stopped me in the middle of the street, I instinctively pushed away the hand reaching out to t
