Chapter 2

Author: CC
The next morning, I drove to the pack hospital alone.

I needed to confirm the twins were okay. To hear their heartbeats one more time before I made my plans.

The corridor was quiet. I turned into the maternity wing—and froze.

Elias and Sophia. At the end of the hallway.

His hand rested on her lower back, guiding her with that same careful touch I’d seen at the hotel. She leaned into him, smiling up at him.

So that’s where he’d been all night.

My chest tightened. I pressed against a support pillar, shaking as I watched them disappear into an exam room.

A few minutes later, Zachary's voice drifted through the half-open door.

"Alpha Elias, you really want this pup?"

"Of course." Elias's voice was firm. "I'm the Alpha of Crimson Moon. I need an heir. This pup—I have to have it."

Silence, then: “And what about Luna Elena?”

A pause. Then Elias’s voice, colder this time.

“Elena can’t give me an heir. When Sophie delivers, we’ll claim her pup as an orphaned packmate’s child. That way no one asks questions.”

The words hit me like a punch to the gut.

He'd planned it all out. Every detail.

He wanted me to raise his pup with her. To pretend everything was fine while I played mother to his child with another woman.

I clenched my jaw, forcing the sob back down. My eyes burned hot, but I refused to make a sound.

The door opened. Sophia came out, Zachary behind her.

"Eli, am I making things hard for you?" Her voice was small and shaky. "This is my fault. I shouldn't have told you about the pregnancy."

She touched her belly. "I thought about ending it. But if I do, I'll never have another pup."

Elias reached out and squeezed her shoulder.

"It's not your fault. She would've found out eventually."

Sophia looked down, her voice breaking. "I know Luna Elena won't like me. But I'll try to make her accept me."

She glanced up at him. "After the pup is born, I’ll move into your house. Babysit. Cook. Clean. Whatever you need. I’m just an Omega—I should serve you and Luna Elena. I won’t cause trouble. I promise."

Elias softened. "I'm sorry you have to deal with this."

My stomach churned. I pressed harder against the pillar.

Zachary said something about medication. Elias nodded and walked toward the pharmacy, leaving Sophia alone.

The second Elias was gone, she changed.

Tears vanished. She straightened, smoothed her dress, and smiled.

“Elena. Watching from the shadows? Cute.”

I moved to step past her. She shifted, blocking me. Elias’s scent clung to her—pine and earth. Too strong. Too familiar.

“You heard it all, didn’t you? Good.”

I inhaled, tried again to move. She followed, her smile sharpening.

“If you were smart, you’d leave now. I’m carrying his pup. The elders will back me. And you?” A soft laugh. “Your bond with Elias is fake. Which makes you the other woman.”

She leaned closer, almost gentle.

“You’ve always been temporary. Everyone knows… except you.”

My nails dug into my palms.

“Sophia, don’t—” But footsteps interrupted. Quick, steady. Elias was coming back.

Sophia’s gaze flicked down, checking her mark on the floor. Then her face transformed. Fear spilled in where the smirk had been.

She stumbled back, clutching her stomach.

“Luna Elena, I know you don’t like me,” she cried loud enough for Elias to hear. “But this pup is innocent. Please—don’t hurt him because of me…”

Then she dropped.

Her body hit the floor hard, hands cradling her belly, face twisted in pain.

I froze. What just happened?

“Sophie!” Elias’s shout thundered down the hall. He was by her side in seconds.

His eyes snapped to me, cold, furious.

"Elena Wells. What did you do to her?"

My mouth opened. Nothing came out. I hadn't—I didn't—

"Eli, it hurts—" Sophia sobbed. "The baby—"

"Don't blame Luna Elena," she gasped. "She's just upset. I understand..."

Elias's jaw clenched. He scooped Sophia into his arms.

"You'll be fine. Zachary will take care of you."

He stood and walked away. Didn't look back. Didn't wait for me to explain.

Just left.

I stood in the empty corridor. No defense. No explanation. Only the pups he’d never know.

Elias Gray—you chose her again.

My vision blurred, but inside, something froze solid.

Fine. Two days. I’ll be gone.

You can have what you really want.

After that night, he was like a madman, following me everywhere, every single day.Wherever I went, I could see him lurking in the distance—always there, always watching.I sighed. This wasn't going to work. My trip was supposed to give me peace, but how could I relax with him stalking me?So I decided to end my travels early and go back to my home in the neutral territories. The whole way back, I kept looking over my shoulder, taking detours, switching routes. Finally, I made it to my place without him catching up.But Elias found me anyway. He was standing at my door when I got back. He looked terrible—dark circles under his eyes, wrinkled clothes hanging off his frame. Nothing like the put-together Alpha I'd known for eight years. When he saw me, his face lit up. "Lena, you're finally here. I've been looking everywhere for you."I just stared at him. Cold. Silent."Lena, I messed up. I know I did. Just give me one more chance." His voice cracked. "The pups need a father. You can't r

When I arrived in the neutral zone, I left everything behind.I stopped thinking about Elias. Stopped letting the past control me.This place was nothing like Crimson Moon. People here—human and wolf—lived side by side. Open fields stretched out under wide skies. Forests lined the roads, dense and green. The air was crisp, the kind that filled your lungs and cleared your head.It felt like a new beginning. A place where I could finally breathe.I focused on getting better. But I also made time to travel and explore. The neutral zone had mountains. Snow on the peaks, forests below. Lakes that caught the light just right.I'd spent years not seeing any of it.Everything had been Elias. Crimson Moon. Being Luna. Now I had space. Space to breathe. Space to see what I'd been missing.Days passed. I smiled more. Felt lighter. One afternoon, I wandered into a small town just in time for the Christmas parade. The streets were packed. Twinkling lights everywhere, music spilling from every corne

Elias's mind was spinning.Sophia sat at the vanity, completely lost in her own fantasy, still muttering to herself. She hadn't noticed him in the doorway."God, Elena—that bitch walks around like she owns the place just because daddy's an elder. I'm so done with her."She held up one of Elena's necklaces to the light, admiring it."Second chance mate? Eight years together?" A bitter laugh. "Please. Took me five minutes to wrap Eli around my finger."Something inside Elias snapped. He crossed the room in three strides, Alpha aura flooding out uncontrolled."Sophia."His voice cut through her monologue like a blade."What are you doing in my bedroom?"She spun around, face draining white."Eli—when did you—""Around the time you started playing Luna." His jaw clenched. "Want to explain that?""I can explain—" She reached for him desperately. He stepped back sharply. "Don't touch me."She froze, hand suspended in the air between them."I protected you. Kept you safe. Made sure you had ev

I was gone. And Elias was unraveling. At the pack hospital, Elias sat beside Sophia's bed. Outside, the sky had gone from afternoon gold to deep evening blue.Something was wrong. He could feel it—a hollow ache in his chest. My face kept surfacing in his mind. The way I'd agreed so easily at the hospital to let Sophia stay. How indifferent I'd seemed when he brought Sophia home. And that look in my eyes when he'd accused me of hurting her.He thought of the two guards stationed outside my door. They'd keep watch. But the unease wouldn't leave."Eli?" Sophia's voice pulled him back. "Are you okay? You look worried. Is it about Luna Elena?"Before he could answer, she gasped—a sharp, breathless sound. Her hand clenched over her belly, her face twisting in pain."Sophie?" Elias was on his feet instantly. "What's wrong?""It hurts—"He hit the call button. Zachary appeared within minutes, examined her, then straightened."Cramps. Stress-related. She needs rest and monitoring."Elias exhale

That evening, Elias brought Sophia home.He opened the car door himself, guiding her out like she might break. Pack guards hauled her luggage up the steps.I stood in the doorway, gripping the frame so hard my knuckles went white.Eight years. This had been our home for eight years."Watch that step, Sophie," Elias murmured. She smiled up at him. "You're too good to me, Eli."Elias cooked dinner that night—something he hadn’t done for me in years. Every dish on the table was Sophia’s favorite. He set a steaming bowl in front of her. “Peanut soup, Sophie. Good for the baby.” His smile lit his face… not for me.“Eli, you’re spoiling me. Won’t Luna Elena be upset?” Her gaze flicked to mine—sweet smile, but her eyes were pure malice. He stiffened, then rushed to smooth it over. “Don’t worry. Lena understands. You need to eat well.” He slid a bowl toward me. “Here, Lena. Have some too.”I stared at it. “I’m allergic to peanuts.”His hand froze. "Right. Sorry. I was thinking about what Sophi

Fortunately, Sophia's "fall" wasn't serious. After a routine checkup, Elias took her back to her hospital room.I stood in the doorway watching him fuss over her—fluffing pillows, adjusting blankets, checking the IV. He moved around her so carefully, you’d think they’d been mates for eight years. And me? I felt like the other woman, crashing someone else’s relationship."Eli, let Luna Elena come in."Sophia's voice drifted out, weak and breathy.Elias glanced at me, then looked away too quickly, like he couldn’t face me.I took a breath and walked into the room. The air felt too warm, too close.“Luna Elena, please don’t be mad at Alpha Eli.”She sat propped against the pillows, one hand on her belly, pale against the sheets. “I asked him to call you. We need to talk properly.”I pressed my lips together. She put on her sweet, wounded act, pretending to be the victim. I refused to play along.Elias sat beside me and took my hand. His scent was different now—something sweet mixed with t
