LOGINBrooklyn Bar
Andrea found an empty seat for herself. Yes, she reserved one for Daniel, too. She took off her sunshade. She checked the time; it was 4:17 pm.
Music boomed from hidden speakers, low enough to converse with someone, but high enough to feel it in your spirit.
She looked around. There was no sight of him yet. A couple of minutes later, she sighted him through the glass wall of the bar. He alights from his car, carrying a shopping bag in his right hand.
He pushed through the door and was met by the wall of music and the murmurs of different conversations layered on top of each other. He scanned the room in sections and eventually found her.
“You know I don’t like to be kept waiting”, she said, as soon as Daniel got to the spot she reserved for both of them.
“I’m sorry, my love”, he apologized and pressed a kiss to her cheek. “I got this for you.”
He handed the paper bag he was carrying to Andrea.
She chuckled.
“It’s my favorite color.”
“Thank you Daniel.”
The bag contained a lilac silky dress.
“We have a date this Friday. I want you to wear that”.
He wore a warm smile.
“I’ll pick you up at Steph’s. 7 pm, be ready.”
Andrea smiled nervously.
“Baby?” Daniel called in a soft tone, his hands reaching for Andrea’s.
Andrea forced a smile.
“I’m sorry about my behavior the other day. I should’ve been more responsible.”
I love you so much, and I don’t want to hurt you, he confessed.
She was startled. “This is unusual”, she thought.
“Do you forgive me?”
Andrea scoffed. She nodded with teary eyes.
He rose from his seat and offered a hand to help her up. They both step aside. He drew her closer to himself, leaving almost no distance between them. His gaze shifted seductively to her lips, then her eyes, then her lips again. They shared a slow, deep kiss. His hands settled on her waist then ran down slowly to her hips.
Andrea pulled back slowly, breaking the kiss gently. She exhaled softly and settled back in her seat. They chatted over a glass of wine. Afterwards, he walked her to his car, took her on an ice cream date, and dropped her at Stephanie’s apartment later that night.
Stephanie’s apartment:
“The dress is so beautiful”, Stephanie admitted.
Andrea chuckled.
“He apologized”.
“Okay?” Stephanie asked, expecting Andrea to say more.
Andrea sighed. “We are cool.”
“I’m so happy for you, girl”, Stephanie said, excited. “I told you he was going to come around. He was probably going through some things”, she added.
Andrea smiled.
Andrea tried her dress on. It was a simple sleeveless long gown, with a slightly open slit running from the level of her lower thigh to her foot. The dress was a quite fitted one, exposing her curves. The front of the dress was designed in such a way that exposed Andrea’s cleavage. She admired herself in front of the mirror.
“Daniel sure knows how to make you happy. I mean, look at this dress”, Stephanie commented.
“But he can be a handful at times”, Andrea objected.
“Whatever”, Stephanie shrugged playfully, hitting her shoulder against Andrea’s. They both laugh.
Friday night
Andrea was fully glammed up for her date, thanks to Stephanie.
“My sweet beauty princess!” Stephanie hyped.
“Thanks baby”, she blushed.
Andrea’s phone lit up and vibrated. It was Daniel. She answered the call.
“Hey baby, I couldn’t make it to come pick you up myself, but my driver is outside at Steph’s house already.”
“Okay Daniel, I’ll be on my way soon.”
Andrea applied some more gloss on her lips. She smacked her lips, tucked her phone in her silver purse, and kissed Stephanie goodbye.
Daniel’s apartment, Friday night
“Knock knock”
Someone opened the door. Andrea found her way in, but the lights were off. Everywhere was quiet. The atmosphere was filled with a sweet fragrance—something like vanilla, or cake.
“Surpriseeee!” Sound and laughter burst from the people in the room as the lights came on.
Andrea froze. She couldn’t believe her eyes. She looked around. Everywhere was decorated with white, red, and gold ribbons and balloons. She took a few steps further, completely entering the room. She gasped. Daniel showed up, fully dressed in a black suit. He held a flower bouquet behind him. He moved closer to Andrea, held her hand, and walked her to the middle of the room. It was his living room. Andrea felt overwhelmed. She had never gotten a surprise like this before. Her eyes brightened as she looked from one person to the next. She opened her mouth, but words failed her. She held one hand to her chest as if her heart could escape from there.
Andrea stood, startled, Daniel facing her. They looked each in the eye as Daniel began. “My lovely Andrea…”
“Awww…so adorable…” were the words coming from the other people in the room.
Daniel finished his speech and handed the bouquet to Andrea. She collected it, her hands trembling.
He went down on one knee, opening a black box containing a silver ring.
“Will you marry me?”
Andrea stood up, shocked to see her.“You slut and killer! Does your new, cheap boyfriend know that you killed your mother and you almost killed my boyfriend, because you were jealous he liked me instead of you, and you ran from your house because you were too ashamed?” Samantha harrassed her.“What do you want from me?” Andrea was getting irritated already.“Daniel and I get married in two weeks’ time, you sore loser that couldn’t keep a man!”Andrea gave her a slap.“What?!” Samantha exclaimed, holding her face. She immediately raised her hand to hit Andrea but Damien was fast enough to grab her hand before it could touch Andrea.“Enough!” He ordered, as he forcefully put Samantha’s hand down.Shirley was watching them in silence, sipping on her yoghurt at intervals.“You won’t barge into someone’s hangout and start insulting them.”Samantha looked furious.“What kind of sister are you for God’s sake?! You make it look like she killed your mother intentionally. Why don’t you become
Suddenly, she felt like she couldn’t breathe, the elevator became unusually tight, her heart skipped many beats, but she tried to remain composed. Samantha’s hands were wrapped around Daniel’s arm; she assumed that posture as soon as Andrea saw them. It was supposed to take only a few seconds to get to the ground floor, but few seconds felt like forever.Immediately the door dinged open, Andrea stepped out, not realizing she had been holding her breath until she exhaled sharply. It was a weird experience for her seeing her ex boyfriend and her sister together, after the experience she had with each of them.“They definitely didn’t come for the party, so what then were they there for?” She wondered. She shrugged the thought off as she unlocked her car, opened the door, and settled in.She sat, her hands placed on the steering wheel for a couple of minutes like they were stuck there, lost in thoughts for a few minutes before the started the engine and drove off.She was still staying wi
Three days later, Stephanie’s apartment:Andrea was getting ready for the send-off party of the president of her hospital, the one Dr. Martinez had invited her to earlier. She was dressed in a stylish olive green blouse with a burnt-orange palazzo. Stephanie stood a few meters from her as if she was observing her.“Andrea, are you sure you’re in a good mental state to attend the event?” Stephanie asked, concerned.“You worry too much, Steph”, Andrea replied, chuckling, as she wore her earrings, facing the mirror.“I mean, what if Daniel shows up and does something to you?” Stephanie moved closer to her to assist her with her necklace.“There will be people there. There’s nothing Daniel can do, even if he shows up”, Andrea replied, smiling.“And moreover, I just want to go out…you know. I’m not a party person, but…” she faced Stephanie, assuring her.“Hm-hm”, Stephanie nodded in agreement, giving her a hug.“I’m borrowing your bag for today”, Andrea said as she went towards Stephanie’s
Daniel’s jaw dropped. Him and Andrea stared into each other’s eyes without saying a word, one filled with rage, the other with confusion and fear. Daniel finally broke eye contact by looking down at the box with the items lying helplessly on the floor. He didn’t need anyone to tell him Andrea already found out. The atmosphere was tense and the silence already said more than what any other person could. Andrea stepped back, her chest rising and falling. She pulled out the ring off her finger, stoned it at Daniel, and left without looking back. Daniel stood dumbfounded. He wanted to call her back but his voice failed him. He turned back, entered his office, and shut the door.“Damn!” He screamed in frustration. He sat on a couch, his hand resting on his thighs. He stood up, pacing around the office from wall to wall. He sat again, thought for a while, and picked his phone. He dialed Mr Morgan’s number.“Your daughter should learn to take it easy with her temper, Mr Morgan.”Pause.“I’m
She pulled the cabinet drawers to search for her car keys. She found the keys and held it tight in her hand. She scurried to the dining area to grab the gift box. She paused. The thought hit her suddenly. She hadn’t brushed her teeth, she hadn’t had her bath. She rushed to her room, and in minutes, she changed her dress into something cleaner. She didn’t have any more patience to have a proper bath. She opened the drawer close to the head of her bed and grabbed her mouth spray. “Pff pff pff” the mint flavor landed on her tongue. She stared at herself in the mirror, breathing in and out like she had just run a race. She took a deep breath. She walked steadily back to the dining, picked up the box and her keys, and walked out of the house in calm anger. She drove to her father’s house.Mr Morgan’s apartment:Mr Morgan was relaxing on his recliner, scrolling on his tablet. Andrea didn’t use the doorbell. She opened the door, securing the gift box well between her underarm and her arm, s
“My best friend is getting married”, Stephanie squealed happily.“Call me Mrs Lucas”, Andrea bragged, flaunting her ringed hand in the air.“Your mum must be so proud of you.”“I don’t think so.” Andrea’s tone changed.“Girl, how long do you want to keep beating yourself up over your mother’s death?”Andrea sighed.“I could have done better, I mean, according to everyone else’s judgment.”Stephanie pulled her close for a hug. “It’s alright, girl.”The room was silent for a moment.I’m going back home today, Andrea broke the silence.“Just like that, and one week is over.”How time flies… Andrea replied. They both chuckle.“I’ll miss you so much my girl. Sorry, Mrs. Lucas.” A brief laughter filled the room.“Me too”, Andrea reached out for a hug.“Are you packed?” Stephanie asked.“Oh, yes. I did that yesterday.”“I trust you. My very organized girl”, Stephanie said, giving Andrea a teasing look. They giggle.Andrea stood at her door. She fetched the key from her purse and rattled the
