Veronica's POV

I couldn't breathe! Smoke clouded my vision and lungs.

"Dever! Where are you?!"

No response.

"Dever!!"

"I'm right behind you, love." I felt his hand graze my back, before squeezing it. “Stay close by."

I did as he instructed, my eyes stinging as I tried to keep them open. Smoke covered every inch of the building, blurring my vision. Soot littered the ground as he guided me blindly through the hallway. I heard a child wailing from a distance, the crackling of fire licking up the house, screams and howls.

My pack was under attack.

An arrow sizzled past my ears as we made it outside the building. I screamed.

"Hey, it's okay Vee. It will all be over soon," he whispered, nudging me towards the woods surrounding us. "Go over there and wait for me."

My legs refused to move. "You’re not going back there. It’s too risky. "

"I have to help others. Blackmoon warriors have surrounded the entire place." He kissed my forehead. "I have to protect the pack. That's my duty to them."

Fear numbed my body and every sound around me. I knew he had a duty to our people, as their alpha, but he had one to me as his mate—to stay alive.

"What of your duty to me and your unborn child?" I choked out, letting my fear evident through my voice.

"You'll be safe there, Vee. Stay behind the woods and out of sight. If you sense any danger, run."

"No!" I yelled, grabbing his hand. "If you must go, I'll come along and fight beside you."

"Do you want me to worry? Watching and worrying after you?" He kissed me once more. I hated the taste of it like he was saying goodbye. He tugged on his arm. "I'll be back, I promise."

I held on tight, refusing to let go. His gaze rested on me, pleading. I felt my resolve weaken just as a soft gasp escaped his lips and slowly his eyes dropped. I followed his gaze and let out a scream as I saw an arrowhead protruding from the right side of his belly.

He slumped into my arms, his mouth open in surprise. I stared, dazed as his blood coated my hands.

“Run Vee,” he whispered, pulling me out of my state. “Please.”

His head rolled off my arms. I felt my bloodied hands drop to my side as I stood mechanically and turned, letting my feet hit the ground as fast as they could.

An arrow flew past me, grazing my ear. A round of them went off, raining down and littering my path. The woods stretched out before me, only a few feet away.

Two more steps… one.

A piercing pain raked my back, spreading quickly like molten lava all over my body. I howled just as another struck my leg. I stumbled forward, falling to the ground as my legs failed me. My head fell to the side and I pushed back the darkness trying to engulf me, letting my half-dazed eyes search for him.

I’m sorry my love… I failed you.

My eyes rested on his form, still sprawled on the ground. A man stood over his body and kicked its lifeless form, depositing one more arrow into his body.

I whimpered, finally letting the pain within me sing freely before giving in to the darkness behind my eyes.

  • Betrayed and Sold to the Cursed Alphas   Chapter14

Kade’s POVIt took every ounce of self-control in me not to jump at the guards blocking my path. Self-control was not my strong suit, but the thought of that little mint out there, roaming free and far from me, made every other inconvenience seem minor.I warned her… She was going to regret her very existence. From the corner of my eye, I watched Klaus raise his hands in surrender. I barely held back a growl before following his lead. The guards sheathed their swords, yet their stance remained defensive.“What is this about?” I asked, taking a step closer to Klaus. My voice betrayed the anger already churning my insides. “We are well within our lands, and you lot are trespassing!”Their silence infuriated me more than I expected, even though it was expected. The council’s guard never speaks. Their presence was a summons and that alone. Any other time, I would have entertained their presence, even had a bit of a laugh. But not tonight. Not with the rage and hunger lighting me up.An a

Veronica’s POV“Crazy little shit…” The words floated through the thick fog around my mind. I couldn’t tell if I was dreaming or drowning. I stirred and regretted it instantly. Cold bit into my skin, and I shivered violently, instantly reaching for the blanket. Cold, hard ground greeted my hands. I snatched them back to my chest. Why am I on the floor?“...that wasn’t what I instructed.”The voice returned. It sounded faint under the thick fog.“We had to improvise. You said it was going to be just her in the room.”Room? What room?I tried to open my eyes, shutting them tightly as the harsh light filtered in. Pain flashed across my forehead, and I inhaled sharply, willing it to pass. Nothing was making sense. I tried to think, but the fog pulled me deeper into the darkness, suffocating me.“It was supposed to be just her. She has caused me more than enough trouble for a lifetime.”That voice. Was I starting to conjure him up in my dreams? “Snap out of it!” Pain cracked across my

Klaus POV“KLAUS!”I spun towards the voice, narrowly missing the spear aimed at my ribs. The wind sliced past my ear. I ducked low, grabbed the attacker by the waist, and slammed him into the ground with enough force to shake the earth. He let out a short gasp before my fist crushed his mouth and drove through the back of his skull. Warm blood splashed across my face.Another came charging. I caught him mid-run, twisted his head with a brutal snap that echoed across the forest. His body dropped like a rag doll.I paced forward, stepping over an injured warrior from my pack. He was writhing in pain. His body pumped full with arrow. I dropped to my knees beside him. He met my gaze, pleading.“Alpha…” he whispered, choking on blood.I tapped his temple, knowing what he was asking of me. I placed his head between my hands and snapped his neck.It was mercy.I rose, my heart thundering with rage. They had appeared from all corners and multiplied within seconds, outnumbering us. They came

  • Betrayed and Sold to the Cursed Alphas   Chapter 11

Veronics POV“Oh, for the love of the sevens!” I groaned, pulling the bed cover over my head, trying to drown out the noise coming from the guard standing outside my room. I’d rapped on the door twice– first quietly, then, screaming, asking him to reduce his voice, but he’d ignored me. It was almost like he took pleasure in knowing he was keeping me awake. Klaus must have instructed him as much before assigning him. Why else would he have a guard standing outside? I was already locked up! I tossed onto the other side of the bed, forcing my eyes shut. I had other things to worry about. I needed to find out about Joren. His bloodied face surfaced behind my eyelids, and a shiver ran through me, leaving a puddle of guilt in its wake.I should have done something to stop Kade… I should have thrown myself…The doorknob rattled, startling me upright. I glanced at the door as the handle turned downward. What was he trying to do?The door creaked open, and I lunged out of the bed, grabbin

  • Betrayed and Sold to the Cursed Alphas   Chapter 10

Klaus POVI hurried down the hallway, my fists clenched as I fought for control. I needed to distract myself, to let out the anger brewing within. I needed an escape, this time, not from Kalahni. I was more likely to hurt than give her pleasure in my state. She was supposed to be in her room. Out of sight! But there she was, barely standing as Kade punched the guard. She had looked at me with fear, not for herself, but for the guard. Something within me had snapped at the thought of it. I fought down the urge to go down and laid my fist into the guard’s skull as well.I could still feel the heat of her gaze on my skin, warming me in places that were covered from the eyes. Time and distance had done nothing to quench whatever this was. Even regular visits to Kalahni weren’t enough to get thoughts of her out of my head.I walked faster, my muscles aching from trying to restrain myself.I stopped dead at the sight of her. No one was supposed to be here. But there she was, standing and s

  • Betrayed and Sold to the Cursed Alphas   Chapter 9

Veronica’s POVI stared at my reflection in the mirror. The rouge smeared across my cheekbones and lips highlighted my features, giving me a sultry look. The maidservant he’d sent had just one purpose in her mind—to make me look like a slut.“I hate how I look,” I groaned, turning away, unable to bear the sight of myself.“You don’t have a choice,” Joden said quietly. He leaned against the slightly open door, his eyes filled with naked appreciation that made my skin crawl. I shrank back.“Do I have to go? Can’t you think of something?” I bit my bottom lip, trying to calm the rising panic. “Tell him I’m... I’m having my monthly crisis. No… say I ate something bad at lunch. My stomach’s in a mess.”Joden shook his head. “That won’t work, I’m afraid. May I suggest something?”I dropped onto the bed, exhausted before the night had even begun. The thought of living with the brothers had me on edge, but the idea of sitting at a table with one of them felt suffocating.“This could be an oppo
