The loud buzzing of my phone cut through the haze of my sleep again and again, as if it refused to let me enjoy sleep like a child after being pounded like a slut. My eyelids felt like bricks, my head pounding from the alcohol still running through my system. I groaned, dragging a hand across my face, but the vibration on the nightstand didn’t stop.

I rained curses under my breath until I finally reached over, squinting at the glowing screen. “Ugly A.B. Twenty-one missed calls.”

My stomach dropped to the ground like a stone. My thumb hovered over the screen, and then I tapped into voicemail.

“Chloe,” Alex’s voice tore through my phone’s speaker, clipped and furious. “Where the hell are you? I’ve been calling you nonstop. We have a twenty-minute breakfast meeting with investors, and I need the reports you prepared. Don’t you mess with me. Call me back immediately.”

The message ended with silence, but my chest was already hammering.

“Ah,” came a smooth, amused voice at my side.

The silence in the suite had been a strange comfort that I had been enjoying all afternoon. Letting wrap its arms around me as I lounged on the couch with Fifty Shades of Grey balanced loosely in my hands. The pages remained glued to my eyes as I followed every sentence written for my pleasure.I was reading this to occupy my day because this was a hundred times better than replaying Alex’s dumb conversation from breakfast, his voice still lingering in the back of my mind as I tried to picture Christian Gray doing all those things to me. “Now I know you’re not some liability.”A sudden buzz caused the coffee table to shake. My phone had lit up from a notification from an unknown number.I hesitated, thumb hovering, before swiping it open.[Can we meet later tonight? Just to talk. B.S.]My chest tightened, an ache blooming where anger and exhaustion usually lived for Alex. I stared at the words, the memory of his voice still so fresh from the elevator a few days ago, lying to my

The sweet smell of coffee pulled me out of my room before I was even fully awake. My head felt like it had been smacked on the floor several times, heavy from the mess I put myself through in the last twenty-four hours, but the sharp scent of roasted beans and buttered croissants was impossible to ignore.I stepped into the suite’s living room and froze.Alex was already at the table. Perfectly composed, not a single hair on his head out of place, a white shirt fitted to his frame, sleeves rolled neatly at his elbows. He sat with one hand holding his iPad, the other casually cutting into his breakfast like it was just another morning. He looked so calm that, for a second, I wondered if I’d dreamt everything that had happened to me yesterday. I was begging God at this point to make sure it wasn’t real.He looked up the moment he sensed me. His eyes softened so unexpectedly that I felt my guard drop in his presence. “Good Morning, Chloe. Sleep well?”My throat was dry, but I forced

I slipped into the farthest corner of the hotel’s lobby while walking to clear my mind. I felt the cold wall against my back as I pressed my phone so tightly to my ear which might’ve cracked it. My hands shook, my pulse racing like I’d just run a mile.Lois picked up on the second ring. “Chloe? How are you?”A loud sigh left my mouth immediately after her questions entered my ear. “I’m just overwhe...”“Why are you whispering like you’re hiding from the cops?” Lois cut me off without allowing me to make my point.I squeezed my eyes shut. “Because I might as well be hiding from the devil himself. You wouldn’t believe, he gave me an ultimatum.”“Who did?” “Alex, of course. He said I have to set up a private dinner with the investors tonight because I missed the meeting this morning. If I don’t do it, then I lose my job.”There was a pause on the call, then Lois burst out laughing loudly in my ear. “You’re kidding. Tell me you’re exaggerating, Chloe. How does he speak to you lik

Our suite door slammed shut behind us, and I didn’t even waste a second in the living room with him. I stormed straight toward my bedroom, the anger bubbling inside me hotter than the humid island air around us. My hand gripped the door handle, ready to shut him out until his infuriating voice rang loudly like a bell.“Chloe!”His command snapped like a whip across the room. I froze, jaw tightening, refusing to turn to look at him.“If you don’t want to return back unemployed, don’t you dare close that door.”I froze and slowly spun around, arms crossing tightly over my chest, fire burning in my eyes. “What now, boss? Haven’t you said enough to me already?”He stood in the middle of the living room, suit jacket half open, tie loosened but I could see the fury rolling off him like steam from a kettle. “What the hell happened today?” His voice was sharp, deadly calm, like each word was carved from stone. “I gave you the schedule of all our activities here!”I laughed bitterly. “

The night air clung heavy and warm as I staggered out of the bar confused, my heels stumping unevenly against the stone pavement. My vision swam a little, the glow of the streetlamps blurring into halos. The alcohol burned hot in my veins, loosening my tongue, anger spilling out of me in broken mutters.“I’m done. Done with all these foolish men,” I hissed to no one in particular. “They all think they own the damn world. Bryan, Alex, every freaking single one of them. Done.”Behind me, his voice came smooth, amused, the faintest curl of laughter riding on it. “Good thing I’m just a nobody looking for a drink.”I spun clumsily, staring at him, though the edges of my vision tilted. He followed at a slow, steady pace, hands in his pockets, eyes glowing under the light.“A nobody?” I laughed too loudly, the sound brittle and sharp. “Please. That’s what they all say until they’ve got you right where they want you. Invisible. That’s what I am. Invisible to Bryan. Invisible to Alex. Invi
