Chapter 2

Author: Ricordi
Nicholas stepped out into the rain, umbrella tilted against the downpour, walking quickly toward her.

"What are you doing here?" His voice was low, tense. "Didn't I tell you? No matter what happens, don't ever come to my house. And don't let Julie see you."

Chanelle lowered her head, her voice small and trembling.

"Today marks our first month together. I just… wanted to spend it with you."

Then she reached out and wrapped her arms around his waist.

Nicholas froze. But the umbrella in his hand shifted, tilting toward her.

"I told you I'd come by tonight," he murmured.

She pouted and tapped his chest lightly with her fist. "Liar. You go home and give all your love to your Luna. You know I'm terrified of thunder, and you still left me alone…"

Then she started crying.

I thought he would scold her, but instead, he reached up to wipe her tears, tenderness flickering across his face.

"How could I forget?" he said softly. "I still remember exactly what you like in bed."

His gaze lingered on her rain-soaked body, on the curve of her hips beneath the clinging lace, and his eyes darkened with desire.

He said. "Go to the hotel first. I'll come satisfy you tonight."

Chanelle looked up at him pleadingly. "Can't I go to your house instead? It'd be more exciting if we slept together there."

His expression hardened.

"No. Absolutely not. If Julie sees you, we're both finished. I'll take you to the hotel myself."

He shoved the umbrella into her hands and turned back toward the house, hurrying through the rain without a thought for his own soaked clothes.

He loved her even more than I thought.

I smiled bitterly, already calculating how to sever our mate bond.

Just then, the door opened. Nicholas stepped inside, probably ready with some excuse about pack business—until he saw me standing there by the door.

He froze. The smile that rose to his lips looked almost painful.

"Julie, why are you standing there? You finished eating?"

I took a step forward, pretending I was about to leave.

"I'm full. Thought I'd get some air."

A flicker of panic crossed his face. He moved quickly, blocking my view of the doorway.

"It's pouring outside. You'll catch a cold."

A loud clap of thunder rolled through the sky. It gave him the excuse he needed.

"You're afraid of thunder," he said, gently pushing me toward the bedroom. "Let's rest, okay?"

On my phone screen, Chanelle still stood outside, clutching the umbrella, waiting like a fool in the storm.

Let her wait a little longer, I thought.

I lay back on the bed, tugging at Nicholas's hand as he tried to leave.

"I'm scared," I said. "I can't sleep."

He squeezed my hand and smiled softly. "Then I'll tell you a story."

I closed my eyes, listening—to the rain, to the sound of his phone ringing again and again, to the edge of panic in his voice each time he hung up.

Aya, my wolf, growled in my mind. 'He really cares that much about Chanelle?'

Her words brought the image back—him holding Chanelle in the rain, her arms tight around his waist.

I remembered the first time I'd heard her name. It was a year ago.

Years into our bond, I had seen Nicholas angry for the very first time… because of Chanelle.

She had insisted on working by his side as his assistant. But for my sake, all his assistants were male werewolves.

When he refused, she'd cried, screamed, threatened to kill herself—even held a knife to her throat, claiming he was discriminating against her because she was a she-wolf.

He'd been furious, cursed her out, and that night, he'd ranted about it to me for hours.

Back then, I hadn't thought much of it. I even told him to let her have the job. He only shook his head and said, "Julie, I won't let you suffer even a little."

After that, he reassigned her to a distant sales post of the pack—and never mentioned her again.

So when did they start this affair, right under my nose?

I couldn't understand it. The werewolf holding me now was thinking of another she-wolf standing outside in the rain.

He tried several times to pull his hand away, but I held on tighter.

With a quiet sigh, he finally gave up and pulled out his phone.

Through half-lidded eyes, I saw the message he sent to his assistant: [Take Chanelle to a hotel. Get her some cold medicine.]

Aya snorted. 'So thoughtful, isn't he? Always the considerate one.'

Only after receiving a reply did Nicholas relax again, wrapping his arm around me and closing his eyes.

The next morning, I went to the council chamber of the pack with him.

The moment we stepped inside, a cup smashed to the floor near my feet.

Nicholas's expression darkened. He pulled me behind him, shielding me. "What in the world?"

That's when I saw Chanelle, standing in the center of a crowd, eyes red from crying.

None of it mattered anymore. All he wanted to know was where Julie had gone.Even if they were no longer bound as mates, he only wished to stay near her, to see her happy.Mandy smiled faintly. "I'm sorry, Alpha. Luna never told me where she went. She just asked me to wish you and Chanelle happiness—and to tell you she hopes you have a pup soon."The words struck him like a blow. His whole body seemed to lose its strength. He gave a hollow laugh, one after another."Julie… without you, how could I ever be happy? You know better than anyone—there's only you. Chanelle… she was never anything more than a mistake," he muttered as he clutched at his hair, pulling until his scalp burned."Julie, I was wrong! I was wrong! I'm sorry…"When Mandy told me all this, I was in the royal capital, attending a meeting with the Alphas of the surrounding packs.Watching Nicholas's tears through the recording, all I fel

From that day on, Nicholas pushed away the last one who ever truly loved him.He spent his days in a fog of alcohol and grief, staring blankly at my photos for hours at a time. The sleepless nights and endless bottles soon caught up with him—he fell gravely ill. When he finally left the hospital, word of his condition spread through the pack like wildfire. The mated wolves of the Blood Shadow Pack began telling stories, romanticizing his love for me as something carved deep into his bones.Only one werewolf didn't join in.She sneered quietly and pulled from her drawer a beautifully wrapped box.On the lid, in bold letters, it read: To Nicholas. For Your Eyes Only.By the time Nicholas returned to his office, he was almost unrecognizable—thin to the point of fragility, his features hollowed. Those who saw him whispered as he passed. Nicholas pushed Chanelle off his body and reached for his jacket."No," he said flatly. "Something's wrong with Julie tonight. I need to go home. Get some rest."Chanelle's face twisted with fury. "Julie, Julie—do you care that much about that old wolf? If you love her so much, then why did you come to me?"Nicholas sighed, exasperated. Watching her cry made him soften, almost against his will, and he was about to console her when his phone rang. His assistant's voice came through, urgent and trembling. "Alpha! Did you pick up Luna yourself?"Nicholas froze. "What do you mean? Five hours ago, I told you to get her.""I did, Alpha," the assistant said, close to tears. "I went straight there after your message, but she wasn't in the car. I thought maybe she got delayed, so I waited. She never showed up."I even checked with the housekeeper, Biji. She said Luna Julie never came home."He immediately sensed me, but suddenly realized that he couldn't sense me anymore. It could onl

Nicholas had no idea—this was all part of a bet between Chanelle and me.Two days ago, she'd come to my door, arrogant and smiling, demanding that I step aside and give her my place.I couldn't help thinking how love really was a fool's tool. It could make even an omega werewolf dream of becoming a Luna. But I didn't refuse her.She wanted to compete—to see who mattered more to Nicholas. Those "suitors" who had crowded around her the other day, shouting their fake confessions, were nothing but hired actors. And Nicholas hadn't even stopped to think—how could any werewolf in the Blood Shadow Pack dare make such a scene outside the council chamber? He'd already lost himself to his emotions."Luna," Chanelle had said that day, her voice sweet and venomous, "no matter how much Alpha used to love you, you're getting old. No amount of makeup can hide the lines on your face."But me? I can stay by his side for a long time."She pointed at a public notice on the wall—my photo beside

The next few days, I carried on with Nicholas the way I always had—calm, composed, pretending nothing had changed. But whenever he tried to touch me, I refused.I told no one in the pack about my plan. Quietly, I began erasing every trace of myself from the Blood Shadow archives. Each record, each mention—gone. Then I kept up the act, following him to the office like any other day."Baby," he said one night, wrapping his arm around my waist, his lips brushing my neck. "You never liked coming to work with me before. Aren't you tired doing this every day now?"My whole body stiffened. I could still picture those same lips pressed against Chanelle's skin, and a wave of nausea rose in my throat.Aya's voice echoed in my mind, sharp and contemptuous. 'He's not worried about us being tired. He just doesn't want us interrupting his little rendezvous with Chanelle.'"Lately," he continued, oblivious, "the elders have been pushing us to have a pup soon."I smiled faintly. "Sure.""But

Two full hours passed before Nicholas finally pulled himself away from Chanelle's body."Darling, you went overboard," she said, her voice laced with a teasing whine. "I can't even walk now."Nicholas only chuckled, giving her a light slap on the rear."Already worn out? There's still another round tonight. Remember to wear that new lingerie you designed."Chanelle brushed his cheek playfully with her fingers."So, Alpha… does that mean you're satisfied with my sales tactics?"They lingered in each other's arms for a moment longer before composing themselves—pretending to argue as they stepped out of the office.Outside, Chanelle slumped over her desk, feigning distress, drawing murmurs of sympathy from her coworkers.Nicholas, meanwhile, darkened his expression and walked toward the break room. The moment he saw me, his entire face softened into a smile. But all I could see was how false it looked. So this was how it had been all along—how he had kept up his affair with Cha
