Chapter 1

Author: Ricordi
I never doubted Nicholas Pendle's love for me. We'd been bonded as mates for five years, and in all that time, he had adored me with a devotion that bordered on worship.

Until today.

Scrolling through his Facebook, I stumbled upon a post that stopped my breath.

Chanelle Ringard had shared a photo of herself in a lace dress. Her caption read: [What should I do if my mate is always unsatisfied?]

Nicholas had always kept his distance from other she-wolves. But on this post—this one—he'd clicked like.

I was frozen in place, confused. And before I could say anything, Nicholas slid his arm around me.

"Chanelle's in charge of selling lingerie," he said smoothly. "If she makes you uncomfortable, I'll delete her right now."

His voice was calm and reassuring. The doubt in my chest slowly faded. After all, from childhood to now, there had never been another she-wolf by his side but me.

My wolf, Aya, said proudly in my mind, Nicholas even cut off all his business ties with female Alphas—for us.

When I heard that, I almost scolded him for spoiling me too much. "You'll ruin me like this," I told him softly. "It's fine if I have to endure a little for the pack's sake."

But Nicholas only smiled, clasping my hand, his eyes burning with affection.

"I don't care," he said. "The pack means nothing to me without you."

Thinking of that, I had waved the whole thing off. I trusted him.

I didn't expect the truth to hit so soon.

Three days later, when he came home from work, he didn't greet me with his usual hug. Instead, he turned straight into the bathroom.

And from his briefcase, something slipped out—a lace dress.

I froze.

When I picked it up, the familiar pattern caught my eye, and Chanelle's Facebook post flashed instantly through my mind. Her photo. His like.

My hands went cold.

"What's wrong, Julie?"

Nicholas stepped out of the bathroom, towel around his neck, and wrapped his arms around me from behind.

Seeing my pale face, he frowned with concern. "Are you feeling sick?"

I stared down at the lace dress in my hands. The sweetness of all those promises between us suddenly felt like a slap.

"What's this?" I asked, a bitter smile tugging at my lips as I held the lace dress up in front of him.

For an instant, panic flickered across his face—but then it was gone.

"Oh, that," he said easily. "I wanted you to try it on."

He took the dress, clutching it in his hand. "You've been distant lately. I just wanted to add a little spark between us."

If I hadn't noticed the faint trace of white fluid on the fabric, I might have believed him.

"I didn't know you'd hate it," he murmured, lowering his head. "Then we won't consider trying this kind of thing again, okay?"

He tossed the dress into the trash, sulking like a scolded pup.

But I said nothing.

"You don't think I'm cheating, do you?" he whispered, turning my face toward him, kissing me softly. "You know I only love you. If you don't believe me, I'll find out who's trying to set me up."

I quickly grabbed his sleeve, shaking my head. "No… I believe you."

Only then did he relax, smiling again as he gathered my clothes to wash by hand.

For five years, Nicholas had managed every detail of my life himself. Even something as small as trimming my nails—he insisted on doing it, afraid I might hurt myself.

My friends used to joke that he would spoil me useless.

He only laughed and said he didn't care—he'd take care of me forever.

But now, watching him move around the room, I remembered that night he marked me as his mate.

His hand gripped mine under the moonlight as he vowed, "I swear to the Moon Goddess that I will never deceive, harm, or betray Julie Shoren."

Under that same moon, I made the same promise—and quietly added one more: If he ever broke his vow, I would leave.

Now, that time had come.

Dinner that night was quiet, the sound of thunder rolling outside. Rain lashed the windows in thick, heavy sheets.

Just as Nicholas reached over to serve me food, his phone rang.

The caller ID glowed on the screen: Chanelle.

I frowned. "Something important?"

He glanced at me, then at the phone, and ended the call.

"Nothing serious. Dinner with you comes first."

He poured me more juice, but before the bottle touched the table, the phone rang again.

"Who's calling so urgently?" I asked, watching him.

"It's a subordinate," he said after a pause. "I'll take it outside."

I nodded, and as soon as he stepped out, I opened the home surveillance app on my phone.

At the villa's side door stood a she-wolf, soaked to the skin, holding a cake.

None of it mattered anymore. All he wanted to know was where Julie had gone.Even if they were no longer bound as mates, he only wished to stay near her, to see her happy.Mandy smiled faintly. "I'm sorry, Alpha. Luna never told me where she went. She just asked me to wish you and Chanelle happiness—and to tell you she hopes you have a pup soon."The words struck him like a blow. His whole body seemed to lose its strength. He gave a hollow laugh, one after another."Julie… without you, how could I ever be happy? You know better than anyone—there's only you. Chanelle… she was never anything more than a mistake," he muttered as he clutched at his hair, pulling until his scalp burned."Julie, I was wrong! I was wrong! I'm sorry…"When Mandy told me all this, I was in the royal capital, attending a meeting with the Alphas of the surrounding packs.Watching Nicholas's tears through the recording, all I fel

From that day on, Nicholas pushed away the last one who ever truly loved him.He spent his days in a fog of alcohol and grief, staring blankly at my photos for hours at a time. The sleepless nights and endless bottles soon caught up with him—he fell gravely ill. When he finally left the hospital, word of his condition spread through the pack like wildfire. The mated wolves of the Blood Shadow Pack began telling stories, romanticizing his love for me as something carved deep into his bones.Only one werewolf didn't join in.She sneered quietly and pulled from her drawer a beautifully wrapped box.On the lid, in bold letters, it read: To Nicholas. For Your Eyes Only.By the time Nicholas returned to his office, he was almost unrecognizable—thin to the point of fragility, his features hollowed. Those who saw him whispered as he passed. Many believed the pack would soon elect a new Alpha. But the Alpha once known for his boundless ambition felt nothing at all. Not until his gaze la

Nicholas pushed Chanelle off his body and reached for his jacket."No," he said flatly. "Something's wrong with Julie tonight. I need to go home. Get some rest."Chanelle's face twisted with fury. "Julie, Julie—do you care that much about that old wolf? If you love her so much, then why did you come to me?"Nicholas sighed, exasperated. Watching her cry made him soften, almost against his will, and he was about to console her when his phone rang. His assistant's voice came through, urgent and trembling. "Alpha! Did you pick up Luna yourself?"Nicholas froze. "What do you mean? Five hours ago, I told you to get her.""I did, Alpha," the assistant said, close to tears. "I went straight there after your message, but she wasn't in the car. I thought maybe she got delayed, so I waited. She never showed up."I even checked with the housekeeper, Biji. She said Luna Julie never came home."He immediately sensed me, but suddenly realized that he couldn't sense me anymore. It could onl

Nicholas had no idea—this was all part of a bet between Chanelle and me.Two days ago, she'd come to my door, arrogant and smiling, demanding that I step aside and give her my place.I couldn't help thinking how love really was a fool's tool. It could make even an omega werewolf dream of becoming a Luna. But I didn't refuse her.She wanted to compete—to see who mattered more to Nicholas. Those "suitors" who had crowded around her the other day, shouting their fake confessions, were nothing but hired actors. And Nicholas hadn't even stopped to think—how could any werewolf in the Blood Shadow Pack dare make such a scene outside the council chamber? He'd already lost himself to his emotions."Luna," Chanelle had said that day, her voice sweet and venomous, "no matter how much Alpha used to love you, you're getting old. No amount of makeup can hide the lines on your face."But me? I can stay by his side for a long time."She pointed at a public notice on the wall—my photo beside

The next few days, I carried on with Nicholas the way I always had—calm, composed, pretending nothing had changed. But whenever he tried to touch me, I refused.I told no one in the pack about my plan. Quietly, I began erasing every trace of myself from the Blood Shadow archives. Each record, each mention—gone. Then I kept up the act, following him to the office like any other day."Baby," he said one night, wrapping his arm around my waist, his lips brushing my neck. "You never liked coming to work with me before. Aren't you tired doing this every day now?"My whole body stiffened. I could still picture those same lips pressed against Chanelle's skin, and a wave of nausea rose in my throat.Aya's voice echoed in my mind, sharp and contemptuous. 'He's not worried about us being tired. He just doesn't want us interrupting his little rendezvous with Chanelle.'"Lately," he continued, oblivious, "the elders have been pushing us to have a pup soon."I smiled faintly. "Sure.""But

Two full hours passed before Nicholas finally pulled himself away from Chanelle's body."Darling, you went overboard," she said, her voice laced with a teasing whine. "I can't even walk now."Nicholas only chuckled, giving her a light slap on the rear."Already worn out? There's still another round tonight. Remember to wear that new lingerie you designed."Chanelle brushed his cheek playfully with her fingers."So, Alpha… does that mean you're satisfied with my sales tactics?"They lingered in each other's arms for a moment longer before composing themselves—pretending to argue as they stepped out of the office.Outside, Chanelle slumped over her desk, feigning distress, drawing murmurs of sympathy from her coworkers.Nicholas, meanwhile, darkened his expression and walked toward the break room. The moment he saw me, his entire face softened into a smile. But all I could see was how false it looked. So this was how it had been all along—how he had kept up his affair with Cha
