Jade

Cars were speeding past us on the dark road as I stepped out barefoot, shivering all over now both from the cold and fear of the unexpected.

Was he really going to do it? Leave me here by the side of the road in nothing but a slip dress and vomit clinging to the sides of my mouth?

“Stop shaking so much!” he commanded, disgust leaking through his tone. The sleeves of his crisp white shirt were rolled up to his elbows now, showing off bulging forearms lined with veins and rippling with muscle.

“I can’t help it.” I cried out, the tears not far behind any longer.

He moved closer to me and I jerked so violently I almost had a seizure right then and there.

“Fucking hell, Jade. Will you just calm down?!” he snapped. “What do you think I want to do? Tear out your hair?”

I didn’t respond, just lowered my lashes and waited for the inevitable.

“Bend a bit,” he calmly instructed.

I looked up at him in confusion and that was when I noticed he was holding a bottle of water.

Slowly doing as he said so as not to rile him up more, I was still a bit wary as I watched him uncap the bottle then wash his large palm before pouring a little in there and bringing it up to my mouth.

“Stay still,” he said again. He then proceeded to rinse off the vomit still stuck to the corners of my mouth and brush off the ones on my dress too.

Gently and with careful movements, he also wiped the makeup off my face, holding back my ponytail so the strands didn’t get stuck to my wet skin as he did so.

Afterward, he handed the rest of the water to me so I could gargle it and get rid of the acidic aftertaste stuck at the back of my throat.

By the time I had spit it out the cold had settled so deep in my bones that even my teeth were chattering now, my dress completely plastered to the outline of my body.

Thankfully, as we were on the other side of the car not facing the road, we were hidden from view of the other vehicles driving past.

Julian capped the now empty bottle and threw it into the car through the open door before shutting it. Then he led me to the passenger side and helped me in, buckled me, closed the door, before rushing to the driver’s side to enter behind the steering wheel.

I noticed he had put up the partition behind us, blocking the sight and most of the smell of the mess I had made there.

I was absolutely never going to recover from this night.

He turned on the car and put the heat on full blast. I sighed when it penetrated my chilled skin, thawing my numb fingers and reducing the chattering of my teeth.

Then he pulled the car back onto the road and began to drive.

I dared not break the precarious silence that had settled around us, choosing to sit as still as a statue and even keep my blinking to a minimum.

I couldn’t help it when the lull of sleep found me though. I felt weak and drained of energy so I just succumbed to it, not fighting.

When I blinked awake, Julian was pulling into a parking spot in our private garage.

Somehow, I felt even tipsier than before, grogginess weighing my limbs down while my vision fogged up.

My throat was also incredibly dry and my head kept spinning in circles, making me feel very dizzy.

When Julian shut the door with a bang as he got out, I emitted a low groan of discomfort, screwing my lids shut.

I felt him open my door and bend into my space. “What’s wrong with you now?”

“I don’t think I can walk up to my room.” I breathed. “My vision’s swimming and I might end up flat on my face before I take two steps.”

He sighed before extending his arms towards my immobile body. I shifted away.

“I swear to God, Jade. What’s the fucking problem this time?”

I blinked up at him with innocent eyes. “I want a piggyback ride.”

JulianI had a fucking splitting headache.Rubbing my temple, I barely glanced at the folder Evans, my acquisitions director, slid my way while I read through the latest reports on my computer screen.“The investors on the Harbor Point project are saying they want another look at the expected returns.”“Why’s that?” I inquired sharply. “I thought this deal was already in the bag. I personally met with them last week.”“Yeah, about that… someone else has shown interest," he hesitated. “Montgomery Group. Seems like they’re now aware of how much of a goldmine this new development could be.”That finally got my attention and I leaned back in my chair to drill a hard stare into him.“How much did they offer?”“Five hundred and eight million. Which puts them at a mere twelve million behind us. They’re obviously willing to start a bidding war.”A muscle jumped in my jaw, a fresh wave of tension tightening my limbs.Maxwell fucking Montgomery, my biggest business rival.I should have expected

JadeBells grabbed her suitcase handle and cocked her head. “Hmm, it depends on what kind of curse to really get my attention, you know.”Shrugging, I leaned nonchalantly against the car to count off my fingers. “You take your pick: bad hair day, skin rash, nasty cold from hell, broken Jimmy Choo heel…”She gasped and clutched her chest. “How dare you. You know how much I adore my Jimmy Choos.”“Then you know how serious I am. Capisce?”“Capisce, ma’am,” she responded with a salute, causing a laugh to bubble out of me.“At ease, soldier. You’re dismissed.”She pulled me into a hug before whispering into my ear, “Tell Julian I’m going to fly over here and skin him balls first if he ever fucking makes you sad or hurt or cry again, you hear me?”“Loud and clear.”She released me then squeezed one of my boobs with a cheeky wink. “Love ya, babe. Leaving now. Drive safe.”I echoed back her first words and watched her head towards the check-in counters before turning away and climbing back i

JadeBells was leaving today. It was the worst news I woke up to this morning and now I was driving to her hotel to pick her up and drop her off at the airport myself, so I could squeeze in a few more moments with her.“Jades, really?” she exclaimed in disbelief when she walked out of her hotel building with a bellhop behind her, eyeing my gleaming white Range Rover parked by the curb—a college graduation gift from my parents. “You’re going to get us into an accident.”I pushed up my oversized aviator sunglasses with a huff of indignation while rounding the car towards her. “Just because I failed my driver’s test twice in a row doesn’t mean I’m that terrible of a driver. I’m here in one piece, aren’t I?”“Calling an Uber is the only sensible option here,” she countered. “I know I have to pay for leaving so abruptly one way or another but does it have to be with my life?”I ignored her and nodded with a smile towards the bellhop to start loading up her luggage. She had no choice but to

Jade“I think that’s our decision to make, Mrs. Starling.” Julian smoothly stepped in now, answering on my behalf and effectively drying up her endless well of questions I was sure she still had in store for me.“Yes, of course,” she immediately relented, smiling her fake veneer smile. “I suppose you’re right.”“That’s reasonable, since you’re both still getting married eventually.” My dad nodded thoughtfully, trying to take over from her before she overcompensated. “What difference does it make whether it’s today or next year?”“Exactly.” I smiled at him in silent appreciation.“I guess we’re waiting for the lovebirds to call the shots then.” Richard announced with an obvious undertone of amusement, glancing at his wife for her input.“So it seems.” Celeste finally sighed then lifted her slim shoulders in a conceding shrug. “I don’t mind much though. As long as you already have a ring on your finger, I can wait.”“Thank you,” I said in a heartfelt tone, breathing easier now as I look

JadeThe soft clinking of cutlery against fine china filled the Davenports’ dining room.Julian was seated beside me, with my parents opposite us and Julian’s at the head of the table. They were making small talk about business amongst themselves while I was trying my best to seem normal, and not at all like my insides were churning like butter. We were pretending tonight. Julian had told me so moments before we stepped out of the car in front of his parents' house half an hour ago. That was why he was paying me more attention than usual; brushing off food crumbs from the corner of my mouth, smiling and talking to me in hushed intimate murmurs, filling up my wine glass without me having to ask.Celeste hadn’t stopped glancing our way with eyes of overflowing happiness.I too couldn’t help myself from getting carried away a little, even though I knew it was all an act.My mind wandered, imagining a time in the very near future when his affection towards me wouldn’t be fake. It would be

JadeBells waved, waited for him to disappear around the corner, before turning to me.“You know it wouldn’t be cheating if you had given out your number.”“Well, I wasn’t interested.”She tapped her chin with one long red nail then hummed. “Now that I think about it, you’ve never been interested. Never ever.”I sighed, aware she was talking about our university days and the numerous parties we attended. I had always been hit on, plenty of times in fact, but I never gave in to anyone.Rumors went around that I was either asexual or a giant prude. Only Bells and a few other close friends knew I was waiting to get engaged to Julian.“I can understand those times,” she continued. “Julian was like a god who could do no wrong in your heart compared to our silly mates who could never keep it in their pants. But now that you’re finally with him and he isn’t treating you the way you deserve to be treated, why are you still stubbornly remaining loyal to him?”I sucked on my straw as I went thr
