Jade

(Present time)

I rolled into my pillow and pressed it around my head as if that would stop the embarrassing memories from flooding in.

It made me feel stupid that I had thought that way once upon a time.

But who could blame me?

I was nothing but a child, and Julian was the one person who was always there when I needed rescuing. Naturally, I grew infatuated with him. Then it turned into this huge crush before I finally admitted to myself that I was hopelessly in love with him.

Foolish me thought he had to be too. That we were perfect for each other despite our nine-year age gap. And I would have confessed my feelings to him, but I experienced my first heartbreak from him on the same day I decided to.

I shot up from the bed in annoyance, giving up on sleep since it just wasn’t coming no matter how hard I was trying.

Grabbing my pink silk robe, I tied it around myself and shuffled out of my room for some late-night snacking. That usually knocked me out faster than anything.

On my way back from the pantry with both my hands full, curiosity pricked at me and I made a silent detour towards Julian’s room without stopping to rethink my actions.

To my surprise, I found the door unlocked. When I turned the knob and nudged it open with my shoulder, I told myself I was only going to take a peek and be out within seconds.

But clumsy as I was, I just had to spill all my snacks on the floor when I leaned into the room more than a couple of inches.

Quietly cursing myself, I lowered to my knees just inside the doorway and began scooping them back up. As I was doing so, I glanced up at all the pink decorations I could see and realized there wasn’t a single personal touch to this room.

It looked like something out of an interior design magazine—no picture frames, no stray clothes, no intimate knickknacks anywhere. Even the bed was perfectly made with pink frilly sheets.

I would have concluded he had never even slept in this room before if not for his scent clinging to every inch of the space around me.

I slowly got to my feet and approached the bed as if being controlled by something unseen. I dumped all my snacks on his nightstand before carefully perching myself on the edge of the bed and smoothing my hands over the cool sheets.

Here, his scent was stronger as I surveyed the pink room from this new angle. I found it funny that he hadn’t even bothered to redecorate. But my humor disappeared when I realized he was probably not planning on staying here long-term so there was no need to waste money anyway.

I leaned back into the mountain of satin-encased pillows behind me and turned my head to bury my nose in them, inhaling long and deep until my skin started to heat up thinking about how Julian’s body was in this same spot not even two nights ago.

I kicked off my fuzzy slippers and snuggled higher on the bed, telling myself I just needed a few minutes before I got up and left.

But the longer I remained, the quicker my breaths came as my mind wandered into forbidden territory.

I thought about Julian fucking me slow on this same bed, with the smell of sandalwood wrapping around our sweaty bodies as he moved his cock deep inside me and whispered filthy things into my ear in that rough, sexy voice of his.

You can take it.

That’s my good girl.

Let me hear you scream for me, sweetheart.

I had no conscious remembrance of my fingers opening my robe and sneaking beneath my sleep shorts to slide through my already drenched folds, my breath hitching in a sharp, heavy gasp when they made contact.

But what I knew was that the next time my lids fluttered open in hazy pleasure, my gaze landed on a very broad, very familiar-looking figure standing in the open doorway and staring straight at me with intense gray eyes.

JulianI had a fucking splitting headache.Rubbing my temple, I barely glanced at the folder Evans, my acquisitions director, slid my way while I read through the latest reports on my computer screen.“The investors on the Harbor Point project are saying they want another look at the expected returns.”“Why’s that?” I inquired sharply. “I thought this deal was already in the bag. I personally met with them last week.”“Yeah, about that… someone else has shown interest," he hesitated. “Montgomery Group. Seems like they’re now aware of how much of a goldmine this new development could be.”That finally got my attention and I leaned back in my chair to drill a hard stare into him.“How much did they offer?”“Five hundred and eight million. Which puts them at a mere twelve million behind us. They’re obviously willing to start a bidding war.”A muscle jumped in my jaw, a fresh wave of tension tightening my limbs.Maxwell fucking Montgomery, my biggest business rival.I should have expected

JadeBells grabbed her suitcase handle and cocked her head. “Hmm, it depends on what kind of curse to really get my attention, you know.”Shrugging, I leaned nonchalantly against the car to count off my fingers. “You take your pick: bad hair day, skin rash, nasty cold from hell, broken Jimmy Choo heel…”She gasped and clutched her chest. “How dare you. You know how much I adore my Jimmy Choos.”“Then you know how serious I am. Capisce?”“Capisce, ma’am,” she responded with a salute, causing a laugh to bubble out of me.“At ease, soldier. You’re dismissed.”She pulled me into a hug before whispering into my ear, “Tell Julian I’m going to fly over here and skin him balls first if he ever fucking makes you sad or hurt or cry again, you hear me?”“Loud and clear.”She released me then squeezed one of my boobs with a cheeky wink. “Love ya, babe. Leaving now. Drive safe.”I echoed back her first words and watched her head towards the check-in counters before turning away and climbing back i

JadeBells was leaving today. It was the worst news I woke up to this morning and now I was driving to her hotel to pick her up and drop her off at the airport myself, so I could squeeze in a few more moments with her.“Jades, really?” she exclaimed in disbelief when she walked out of her hotel building with a bellhop behind her, eyeing my gleaming white Range Rover parked by the curb—a college graduation gift from my parents. “You’re going to get us into an accident.”I pushed up my oversized aviator sunglasses with a huff of indignation while rounding the car towards her. “Just because I failed my driver’s test twice in a row doesn’t mean I’m that terrible of a driver. I’m here in one piece, aren’t I?”“Calling an Uber is the only sensible option here,” she countered. “I know I have to pay for leaving so abruptly one way or another but does it have to be with my life?”I ignored her and nodded with a smile towards the bellhop to start loading up her luggage. She had no choice but to

Jade“I think that’s our decision to make, Mrs. Starling.” Julian smoothly stepped in now, answering on my behalf and effectively drying up her endless well of questions I was sure she still had in store for me.“Yes, of course,” she immediately relented, smiling her fake veneer smile. “I suppose you’re right.”“That’s reasonable, since you’re both still getting married eventually.” My dad nodded thoughtfully, trying to take over from her before she overcompensated. “What difference does it make whether it’s today or next year?”“Exactly.” I smiled at him in silent appreciation.“I guess we’re waiting for the lovebirds to call the shots then.” Richard announced with an obvious undertone of amusement, glancing at his wife for her input.“So it seems.” Celeste finally sighed then lifted her slim shoulders in a conceding shrug. “I don’t mind much though. As long as you already have a ring on your finger, I can wait.”“Thank you,” I said in a heartfelt tone, breathing easier now as I look

JadeThe soft clinking of cutlery against fine china filled the Davenports’ dining room.Julian was seated beside me, with my parents opposite us and Julian’s at the head of the table. They were making small talk about business amongst themselves while I was trying my best to seem normal, and not at all like my insides were churning like butter. We were pretending tonight. Julian had told me so moments before we stepped out of the car in front of his parents' house half an hour ago. That was why he was paying me more attention than usual; brushing off food crumbs from the corner of my mouth, smiling and talking to me in hushed intimate murmurs, filling up my wine glass without me having to ask.Celeste hadn’t stopped glancing our way with eyes of overflowing happiness.I too couldn’t help myself from getting carried away a little, even though I knew it was all an act.My mind wandered, imagining a time in the very near future when his affection towards me wouldn’t be fake. It would be

JadeBells waved, waited for him to disappear around the corner, before turning to me.“You know it wouldn’t be cheating if you had given out your number.”“Well, I wasn’t interested.”She tapped her chin with one long red nail then hummed. “Now that I think about it, you’ve never been interested. Never ever.”I sighed, aware she was talking about our university days and the numerous parties we attended. I had always been hit on, plenty of times in fact, but I never gave in to anyone.Rumors went around that I was either asexual or a giant prude. Only Bells and a few other close friends knew I was waiting to get engaged to Julian.“I can understand those times,” she continued. “Julian was like a god who could do no wrong in your heart compared to our silly mates who could never keep it in their pants. But now that you’re finally with him and he isn’t treating you the way you deserve to be treated, why are you still stubbornly remaining loyal to him?”I sucked on my straw as I went thr
