Julian

“So she threw up all over the Maybach’s seats and now you’re hiding away from your fiancée like a coward is what you’re telling me.” Vince shook his head at me, laughter glinting in his green eyes as smoke from his lit cigar swirled all around us.

My fingers tightened around the tumbler of scotch held in my grip and I shot daggers at my blunt best friend. “Glad to see my misery is a source of entertainment for you.”

He shrugged his buff shoulders. He had filled out even more since the last time I’d seen him—before he left for his final deployment in Afghanistan.

He had new scars too. On his left cheekbone and the side of his jaw. The chicks would love them.

“Classic Jade,” he continued, still grinning with his deep dimples on display. “She had never been able to hold her liquor but that had never discouraged her. Do you think she’d forgive me for missing the engagement party?”

I waved my hand as I drained my drink, not too keen on keeping up this topic of conversation any longer. “She knew you weren’t in the country. She’ll get over it.”

The buzzing of my phone on the desk between us interrupted me just then.

A glance at it showed me the caller was Vivienne and I immediately tapped on the decline button with a grunt of irritation.

Vince’s thick brows inched towards the hairline of his close-cropped hair. “You still fucking her?”

Shaking my head, I leaned forward to set my empty glass aside. “Ended things a few days ago.”

He stubbed out his half-smoked cigar in the ashtray in front of him before leveling a questioning look at me. “Correct me if I’m wrong but you’ve been an engaged man for longer than that, no?”

One corner of my mouth curled in slight annoyance. “Your point?”

“Have you really decided to keep things in title only?”

“I cannot fuck Jade.” I told him point blank.

“Why not?” He leaned back into his padded chair in the office of one of his most popular nightclubs. “I saw the pictures. Jade has grown into one hell of a woman and no red-blooded man with a working cock would ever say no to her.”

A displeased sound escaped from my throat. “Are you one of them?”

His green eyes tracked my movements carefully before answering, “Probably. But you know Jade’s like a little sister to me. And now she’s your fiancée and I respect that so actually no.”

He paused then pointed one finger at me. “You also didn’t deny wanting to fuck her.”

“I’m aware. I said I can’t, not that I don’t want to.” I sniffed and rubbed my eyes, hating that he had easily forced the truth out of me. But that was Vince’s superpower. I could tell no lie whenever he was present.

“Ah, you’re being the noble gentleman.” He nodded to himself as if finally understanding. “You know she’s in love with you and fucking her would only put happily-ever-after ideas into her head so you’re trying to avoid that to keep her from future heartbreak when she inevitably learns that you aren’t emotionally available to anyone.”

And that was another one of his superpowers. He could always read me like an open fucking book.

“You’re my friend, not my shrink. So quit psychoanalyzing me.” I bit out. “And she isn’t in love with me. She only thinks she is because it had been put into her head ever since she was a child that I’m the one she’s getting married to. She’s been conditioned to, and it can be snapped out of her with time.”

“So what? You’re going to give up pussy for good?” His tone sounded like he didn’t think that could ever happen. And he was right.

“Nothing is changing.” I responded blandly. “I’m just going to have to be a little more discreet.”

His expression turned disapprovingly amused. “And Jade? Did you factor her into this groundbreakingly stupid plan of yours? What if she also turns to other men?”

“I don’t care what she does. As long as it doesn’t interfere with my business.”

“Wow. You’ve really thought of everything.” He nodded in sarcastic approval. “Good job, soldier.”

I just knew he’d have mockingly patted me on the back too if he was within reach.

“I’d see myself out since your current attitude is managing to put me in an even worse mood.” I told him as I slowly got to my feet and headed for the door.

“Just so it’s clear, your plan is the most disastrous fucking thing I’ve heard and you should really think it over before going ahead with it.” He commented from behind me, causing me to pause for only a brief second before eventually leaving.

He didn’t know what he was talking about. Since I couldn’t break off this engagement myself, the only other way was to push Jade to do it. And if I made her miserable enough by acting like an asshole a little longer, those bright twinkly stars in her eyes would eventually die out and she’d give up on her hope of making things work between us.

I ventured down the hallway towards the main floor, planning on heading straight outside to my car and crashing at my penthouse for the night.

But that plan got derailed as soon as I passed by the packed bar and a woman stumbled into me.

JadeBells was leaving today. It was the worst news I woke up to this morning and now I was driving to her hotel to pick her up and drop her off at the airport myself, so I could squeeze in a few more moments with her.“Jades, really?” she exclaimed in disbelief when she walked out of her hotel building with a bellhop behind her, eyeing my gleaming white Range Rover parked by the curb—a college graduation gift from my parents. “You’re going to get us into an accident.”I pushed up my oversized aviator sunglasses with a huff of indignation while rounding the car towards her. “Just because I failed my driver’s test twice in a row doesn’t mean I’m that terrible of a driver. I’m here in one piece, aren’t I?”“Calling an Uber is the only sensible option here,” she countered. “I know I have to pay for leaving so abruptly one way or another but does it have to be with my life?”I ignored her and nodded with a smile towards the bellhop to start loading up her luggage. She had no choice but to

Jade“I think that’s our decision to make, Mrs. Starling.” Julian smoothly stepped in now, answering on my behalf and effectively drying up her endless well of questions I was sure she still had in store for me.“Yes, of course,” she immediately relented, smiling her fake veneer smile. “I suppose you’re right.”“That’s reasonable, since you’re both still getting married eventually.” My dad nodded thoughtfully, trying to take over from her before she overcompensated. “What difference does it make whether it’s today or next year?”“Exactly.” I smiled at him in silent appreciation.“I guess we’re waiting for the lovebirds to call the shots then.” Richard announced with an obvious undertone of amusement, glancing at his wife for her input.“So it seems.” Celeste finally sighed then lifted her slim shoulders in a conceding shrug. “I don’t mind much though. As long as you already have a ring on your finger, I can wait.”“Thank you,” I said in a heartfelt tone, breathing easier now as I look

JadeThe soft clinking of cutlery against fine china filled the Davenports’ dining room.Julian was seated beside me, with my parents opposite us and Julian’s at the head of the table. They were making small talk about business amongst themselves while I was trying my best to seem normal, and not at all like my insides were churning like butter. We were pretending tonight. Julian had told me so moments before we stepped out of the car in front of his parents' house half an hour ago. That was why he was paying me more attention than usual; brushing off food crumbs from the corner of my mouth, smiling and talking to me in hushed intimate murmurs, filling up my wine glass without me having to ask.Celeste hadn’t stopped glancing our way with eyes of overflowing happiness.I too couldn’t help myself from getting carried away a little, even though I knew it was all an act.My mind wandered, imagining a time in the very near future when his affection towards me wouldn’t be fake. It would be

JadeBells waved, waited for him to disappear around the corner, before turning to me.“You know it wouldn’t be cheating if you had given out your number.”“Well, I wasn’t interested.”She tapped her chin with one long red nail then hummed. “Now that I think about it, you’ve never been interested. Never ever.”I sighed, aware she was talking about our university days and the numerous parties we attended. I had always been hit on, plenty of times in fact, but I never gave in to anyone.Rumors went around that I was either asexual or a giant prude. Only Bells and a few other close friends knew I was waiting to get engaged to Julian.“I can understand those times,” she continued. “Julian was like a god who could do no wrong in your heart compared to our silly mates who could never keep it in their pants. But now that you’re finally with him and he isn’t treating you the way you deserve to be treated, why are you still stubbornly remaining loyal to him?”I sucked on my straw as I went thr

Jade“I hate seeing you like this.” Bells said while we were seated on the outdoor patio of a bakery café a couple streets down from my neighborhood.“Like what?” I acted clueless, taking a small sip of my peach iced tea.“Faking it in front of me. A complete stranger could clock the sadness in your eyes from a mile away.”“That sucks then.” I shrugged. “Thought I was a better actress.”“You also ordered a giant chocolate chip cookie. Your sweet tooth tends to get out of hand when you’re trying to comfort yourself.”“Ugh.” I dropped the crumb I was nibbling on and ground the heels of my palms into my eye sockets. “I really don’t wanna cry in public, Bells. So could we talk about something else, please?”She scoffed and looked away, simmering in annoyance on my behalf.I on the other hand picked up my piece of cookie and kept nibbling, content to just sit in silence and distract myself with watching people stroll past and cars weave through the steady afternoon traffic.I could have st

JadeJust the sound of his approaching footsteps made cold sweat slide down my spine.I was in a seated wide angle straddle pose when he eventually emerged and casually flicked that stormy gaze of his in my direction.Almost choking on my inhale, I immediately closed my parted legs and opened my mouth to greet him a good morning, but he turned on his heel and walked away towards the kitchen in the next second, giving me a view of his broad back clad in another perfectly tailored black suit.I swallowed back the words then watched from my defeated perch on the ground as Hazel cheerily greeted him and he murmured back a response before accepting a mug of coffee from her.He wasn’t friendly, but he wasn’t completely cold either. And his current expression wasn’t the stony one he had directed my way.Just neutral. Impassive.Well, I guess I could understand that on some level since Hazel hadn’t puked in his car or come all over his sheets.Speaking of sheets…I hopped to my feet and raced
