Jade

I waited late into the night but Julian never came back home.

I had planned to apologize to him for my drunken behavior yesterday. The vomit, the absurd demands, all of it. If I had to beg on my knees I had been prepared to. I just wanted him to know I never meant to embarrass him on purpose.

But now he wasn’t even here for me to do that.

I lay awake staring up at the delicate crown molding of the ceiling, the glow from the chandelier starting to hurt my eyes already.

My mind was wandering, memories from the past rising to the surface.

The most prominent one at the moment was from when I was six and I had gotten poked in the eye while playing in the park…

(Fifteen years ago)

It was the weekend so mom and dad were at another one of their business events.

I supposed I should be sad because they’d left me behind yet again, but I wasn’t. Leaving me behind only meant one thing—Julian was going to come take me to the park to watch him play football.

I giggled around the lollipop he got for me as I swung from the swings beside Maya, one of my classmates from elementary school. She was also my friend.

Julian was shirtless, running around the field with his friends opposite the playground where I was. They were chasing after a ball and yelling and it was pretty funny to watch.

A pair of boys my age walked past us and laughed. When I glared at them, they walked back to stand in front of us before one of them pointed,

“Look Mike! They’re so tiny that their little legs don’t even touch the ground.” Then they bent over and clutched their stomachs laughing.

I felt myself getting angrier by the second at being made fun of. I hated it. I hated bullies.

And so I jumped off the swing and stomped up to them, my pigtails flying. Maya called me back from behind but I ignored her.

Coming to a stop in front of them, I waited till they straightened and stopped laughing before fuming in their faces. “You two are a bunch of jerks!” Then I raised a hand and slapped the one who had insulted Maya and I.

He screamed and clutched his cheek, eyes turning red from anger and pain. Before I could stick out my tongue at him because he deserved it, he suddenly shot out his hand and drove one finger into my right eyeball.

I screamed way louder than he had, lollipop falling out of my mouth as I jumped and shrieked before dropping to the ground to roll around crying while holding my injured eye.

I had been performing my theatrics for only seconds when I heard Julian’s running footsteps coming for me.

“Fuck, what happened here?” He fell to his knees in the sand beside me and grabbed my flailing body. “Little Jade, why are you crying? Who hit you in the eye? Let me see.”

I was sniffling so hard and dripping tears out of my remaining eye that I began releasing hiccups. Snot and dirt had made an absolute mess of my face too but Julian didn’t look at any of that.

He carried me so I was standing upright in front of him before prying my hand away from my injured eye. It was screwed tightly shut and when he asked in a soft voice if I could try and open my lid, I burst into a fresh wave of pathetic tears.

“They did that to her!”

From my one eye I saw Maya pointing at the two jerks who were standing scared to our side.

Julian sliced them a glare so sharp I was sure they had peed their pants a little from it.

Feeling slightly smug now, I lessened my cries and was only sniffling and hiccuping now.

“Vince, take care of them.” Julian looked up at his best friend who had run here with him and collected his shirt Vince was holding out for him.

He bunched the fabric into a ball then used it to carefully wipe my face while Vince marched up to the two boys. He was tall and muscly and a bit scary-looking to be honest even though he was just sixteen.

When he got on eye level with them and began yelling in their faces about why it was totally unacceptable to physically hurt girls, they began shaking from fear and I almost felt sorry for them.

I had stopped crying by now and managed to open my injured eye only slightly.

“Does it feel better?” Julian asked while he cupped his shirt around my nose for me to blow into it.

I bobbed my head and looked up at him with one swollen eye and one reddened eye.

He chuckled at the funny sight I must have made, tugging on one of my pigtails. “We still have to go to the pharmacy though for maybe an eyedrop to ease the irritation. Then after we’re done, we can go get ice cream.” His gray eyes sparkled as he broke into a handsome grin, his teeth white and even. “Does little Jade want ice cream?”

I bobbed my head again, feeling my chest expand as I took in a deep excited breath.

“Nuh-uh. I’ve got to hear you tell me yes before I agree.”

I blushed and looked at my sandy shoes. “Yes, Juju.” I told him in a soft, shy voice.

“That’s my sweet girl.”

I blushed even harder as he got to his feet and extended his big hand for me to slide my tiny one into.

Maya held my other hand and Vince finally sent the thoroughly chastised boys away before walking along with us too.

Surrounded on both sides by the people who cared the most about me, I couldn’t have felt happier or more on top of the world.

Julian was the most important to me. My hero. And I couldn’t wait to grow older and finally get married to him, with Maya being one of my bridesmaids and Vince being his best man.

JulianI had a fucking splitting headache.Rubbing my temple, I barely glanced at the folder Evans, my acquisitions director, slid my way while I read through the latest reports on my computer screen.“The investors on the Harbor Point project are saying they want another look at the expected returns.”“Why’s that?” I inquired sharply. “I thought this deal was already in the bag. I personally met with them last week.”“Yeah, about that… someone else has shown interest," he hesitated. “Montgomery Group. Seems like they’re now aware of how much of a goldmine this new development could be.”That finally got my attention and I leaned back in my chair to drill a hard stare into him.“How much did they offer?”“Five hundred and eight million. Which puts them at a mere twelve million behind us. They’re obviously willing to start a bidding war.”A muscle jumped in my jaw, a fresh wave of tension tightening my limbs.Maxwell fucking Montgomery, my biggest business rival.I should have expected

JadeBells grabbed her suitcase handle and cocked her head. “Hmm, it depends on what kind of curse to really get my attention, you know.”Shrugging, I leaned nonchalantly against the car to count off my fingers. “You take your pick: bad hair day, skin rash, nasty cold from hell, broken Jimmy Choo heel…”She gasped and clutched her chest. “How dare you. You know how much I adore my Jimmy Choos.”“Then you know how serious I am. Capisce?”“Capisce, ma’am,” she responded with a salute, causing a laugh to bubble out of me.“At ease, soldier. You’re dismissed.”She pulled me into a hug before whispering into my ear, “Tell Julian I’m going to fly over here and skin him balls first if he ever fucking makes you sad or hurt or cry again, you hear me?”“Loud and clear.”She released me then squeezed one of my boobs with a cheeky wink. “Love ya, babe. Leaving now. Drive safe.”I echoed back her first words and watched her head towards the check-in counters before turning away and climbing back i

JadeBells was leaving today. It was the worst news I woke up to this morning and now I was driving to her hotel to pick her up and drop her off at the airport myself, so I could squeeze in a few more moments with her.“Jades, really?” she exclaimed in disbelief when she walked out of her hotel building with a bellhop behind her, eyeing my gleaming white Range Rover parked by the curb—a college graduation gift from my parents. “You’re going to get us into an accident.”I pushed up my oversized aviator sunglasses with a huff of indignation while rounding the car towards her. “Just because I failed my driver’s test twice in a row doesn’t mean I’m that terrible of a driver. I’m here in one piece, aren’t I?”“Calling an Uber is the only sensible option here,” she countered. “I know I have to pay for leaving so abruptly one way or another but does it have to be with my life?”I ignored her and nodded with a smile towards the bellhop to start loading up her luggage. She had no choice but to

Jade“I think that’s our decision to make, Mrs. Starling.” Julian smoothly stepped in now, answering on my behalf and effectively drying up her endless well of questions I was sure she still had in store for me.“Yes, of course,” she immediately relented, smiling her fake veneer smile. “I suppose you’re right.”“That’s reasonable, since you’re both still getting married eventually.” My dad nodded thoughtfully, trying to take over from her before she overcompensated. “What difference does it make whether it’s today or next year?”“Exactly.” I smiled at him in silent appreciation.“I guess we’re waiting for the lovebirds to call the shots then.” Richard announced with an obvious undertone of amusement, glancing at his wife for her input.“So it seems.” Celeste finally sighed then lifted her slim shoulders in a conceding shrug. “I don’t mind much though. As long as you already have a ring on your finger, I can wait.”“Thank you,” I said in a heartfelt tone, breathing easier now as I look

JadeThe soft clinking of cutlery against fine china filled the Davenports’ dining room.Julian was seated beside me, with my parents opposite us and Julian’s at the head of the table. They were making small talk about business amongst themselves while I was trying my best to seem normal, and not at all like my insides were churning like butter. We were pretending tonight. Julian had told me so moments before we stepped out of the car in front of his parents' house half an hour ago. That was why he was paying me more attention than usual; brushing off food crumbs from the corner of my mouth, smiling and talking to me in hushed intimate murmurs, filling up my wine glass without me having to ask.Celeste hadn’t stopped glancing our way with eyes of overflowing happiness.I too couldn’t help myself from getting carried away a little, even though I knew it was all an act.My mind wandered, imagining a time in the very near future when his affection towards me wouldn’t be fake. It would be

JadeBells waved, waited for him to disappear around the corner, before turning to me.“You know it wouldn’t be cheating if you had given out your number.”“Well, I wasn’t interested.”She tapped her chin with one long red nail then hummed. “Now that I think about it, you’ve never been interested. Never ever.”I sighed, aware she was talking about our university days and the numerous parties we attended. I had always been hit on, plenty of times in fact, but I never gave in to anyone.Rumors went around that I was either asexual or a giant prude. Only Bells and a few other close friends knew I was waiting to get engaged to Julian.“I can understand those times,” she continued. “Julian was like a god who could do no wrong in your heart compared to our silly mates who could never keep it in their pants. But now that you’re finally with him and he isn’t treating you the way you deserve to be treated, why are you still stubbornly remaining loyal to him?”I sucked on my straw as I went thr
