Bells grabbed her suitcase handle and cocked her head. “Hmm, it depends on what kind of curse to really get my attention, you know.” Shrugging, I leaned nonchalantly against the car to count off my fingers. “You take your pick: bad hair day, skin rash, nasty cold from hell, broken Jimmy Choo heel…” She gasped and clutched her chest. “How dare you. You know how much I adore my Jimmy Choos.” “Then you know how serious I am. Capisce?” “Capisce, ma’am,” she responded with a salute, causing a laugh to bubble out of me. “At ease, soldier. You’re dismissed.” She pulled me into a hug before whispering into my ear, “Tell Julian I’m going to fly over here and skin him balls first if he ever fucking makes you sad or hurt or cry again, you hear me?” “Loud and clear.” She released me then squeezed one of my boobs with a cheeky wink. “Love ya, babe. Leaving now. Drive safe.” I echoed back her first words and watched her head towards the check-in counters before turning away and climbing back into my car. On the way back, I cranked up Dua Lipa on the stereo to drown out my loud-as-hell thoughts and began singing along to her upbeat vocals. I might have been having a little too much fun bopping to the music and gotten a little distracted because I carelessly switched lanes without checking my blind spot. The next thing I heard was a loud crunch ringing through my ears as my Range Rover sideswiped a car beside me, sending my heart flying straight into my throat. I immediately slammed on the brakes and jerked the steering wheel back to stop the car. Hunched forward with a pounding pulse, my sunglasses having slipped down the bridge of my nose from the impact, I glanced towards the sideview mirror to see the driver of the car I had clipped angrily getting out of his car and charging towards my door with a pissed off expression on his face. “Oh my God, oh my God.” I locked the doors in a panic just as he pulled up by my window and hit on the glass with a balled-up fist. “What the fuck was that? Your car knocked into mine and you’re just going to sit in there and act like you did nothing wrong?!” Feeling slightly shaky and not sure what else to do, I rolled down the window about two inches so it wouldn’t come off like I was ignoring him. “I’m so sorry. I wasn’t looking and-—” “Yeah of course, you weren’t! Not with those huge sunglasses probably taking half your eyesight away. Do you even have a fucking license?” Freezing in place, I stared wide-eyed at him from beneath the cover of my aviators. “I—” “You don’t, do you?” He turned slightly away to pinch the bridge of his nose while mumbling curses about reckless trust-fund idiots. “I-I do.” I spoke over him in a voice I was regretfully aware didn’t sound confident in the least. Grabbing my bag, I jerked up my glasses and began pretending to fumble through it to buy time so I could think of a solution out of this. “I just need to find it in here somewhere…” I needed to call someone, but who? Bells was gone. Dad would wonder why I didn’t call Julian and would eventually get the reason out of me which would lead to him convincing me to call off the engagement because my happiness always came first for him. And then the Julian in question wasn’t reliable since he never picked up my calls anyway. Besides, I was trying to make him believe I could handle myself in any kind of situation without his help. Calling him to bail me out of this one would defeat that entire purpose. “You need to get the fuck out. I’m calling the cops,” the man threatened, clearly at the end of his patience now. Oh God. Spurred on by nerves and desperation, my hand landed on my phone without much thought, fingers moving towards my contacts and tapping on one of them almost blindly. Please pick up. Please pick up…JulianI had a fucking splitting headache.Rubbing my temple, I barely glanced at the folder Evans, my acquisitions director, slid my way while I read through the latest reports on my computer screen.“The investors on the Harbor Point project are saying they want another look at the expected returns.”“Why’s that?” I inquired sharply. “I thought this deal was already in the bag. I personally met with them last week.”“Yeah, about that… someone else has shown interest," he hesitated. “Montgomery Group. Seems like they’re now aware of how much of a goldmine this new development could be.”That finally got my attention and I leaned back in my chair to drill a hard stare into him.“How much did they offer?”“Five hundred and eight million. Which puts them at a mere twelve million behind us. They’re obviously willing to start a bidding war.”A muscle jumped in my jaw, a fresh wave of tension tightening my limbs.Maxwell fucking Montgomery, my biggest business rival.I should have expected

JadeBells was leaving today. It was the worst news I woke up to this morning and now I was driving to her hotel to pick her up and drop her off at the airport myself, so I could squeeze in a few more moments with her.“Jades, really?” she exclaimed in disbelief when she walked out of her hotel building with a bellhop behind her, eyeing my gleaming white Range Rover parked by the curb—a college graduation gift from my parents. “You’re going to get us into an accident.”I pushed up my oversized aviator sunglasses with a huff of indignation while rounding the car towards her. “Just because I failed my driver’s test twice in a row doesn’t mean I’m that terrible of a driver. I’m here in one piece, aren’t I?”“Calling an Uber is the only sensible option here,” she countered. “I know I have to pay for leaving so abruptly one way or another but does it have to be with my life?”I ignored her and nodded with a smile towards the bellhop to start loading up her luggage. She had no choice but to
Jade“I think that’s our decision to make, Mrs. Starling.” Julian smoothly stepped in now, answering on my behalf and effectively drying up her endless well of questions I was sure she still had in store for me.“Yes, of course,” she immediately relented, smiling her fake veneer smile. “I suppose you’re right.”“That’s reasonable, since you’re both still getting married eventually.” My dad nodded thoughtfully, trying to take over from her before she overcompensated. “What difference does it make whether it’s today or next year?”“Exactly.” I smiled at him in silent appreciation.“I guess we’re waiting for the lovebirds to call the shots then.” Richard announced with an obvious undertone of amusement, glancing at his wife for her input.“So it seems.” Celeste finally sighed then lifted her slim shoulders in a conceding shrug. “I don’t mind much though. As long as you already have a ring on your finger, I can wait.”“Thank you,” I said in a heartfelt tone, breathing easier now as I look
JadeThe soft clinking of cutlery against fine china filled the Davenports’ dining room.Julian was seated beside me, with my parents opposite us and Julian’s at the head of the table. They were making small talk about business amongst themselves while I was trying my best to seem normal, and not at all like my insides were churning like butter. We were pretending tonight. Julian had told me so moments before we stepped out of the car in front of his parents' house half an hour ago. That was why he was paying me more attention than usual; brushing off food crumbs from the corner of my mouth, smiling and talking to me in hushed intimate murmurs, filling up my wine glass without me having to ask.Celeste hadn’t stopped glancing our way with eyes of overflowing happiness.I too couldn’t help myself from getting carried away a little, even though I knew it was all an act.My mind wandered, imagining a time in the very near future when his affection towards me wouldn’t be fake. It would be
JadeBells waved, waited for him to disappear around the corner, before turning to me.“You know it wouldn’t be cheating if you had given out your number.”“Well, I wasn’t interested.”She tapped her chin with one long red nail then hummed. “Now that I think about it, you’ve never been interested. Never ever.”I sighed, aware she was talking about our university days and the numerous parties we attended. I had always been hit on, plenty of times in fact, but I never gave in to anyone.Rumors went around that I was either asexual or a giant prude. Only Bells and a few other close friends knew I was waiting to get engaged to Julian.“I can understand those times,” she continued. “Julian was like a god who could do no wrong in your heart compared to our silly mates who could never keep it in their pants. But now that you’re finally with him and he isn’t treating you the way you deserve to be treated, why are you still stubbornly remaining loyal to him?”I sucked on my straw as I went thr
