Chapter 17

Author: River Fish
Phoebe watched Connor leave, and her hands trembled slightly by her sides.

He was the one who had asked for a divorce, yet he was also the one who had ordered her to return to Russell Manor with a single sentence. He hadn't even waited for her to say anything before leaving. She wondered if it was because he didn't think she would ever say no.

In his eyes, she was at his beck and call.

Phoebe took a deep breath, wanting to expel the negative emotions in her heart. What troubled her more now was whether she wanted to head to Russell Manor. Philip was there, and he would know something was up if she wasn't there. But she and Connor had already signed the divorce agreement, and she didn't want to go.

Alexandra called her as she struggled with the decision. "Phoebe, sit tight in the box for now. I'll let you know when it's time. I'm taking you to meet a big shot."

Phoebe stopped stressing over whether to head to Russell Manor for the time being. She asked, "What big shot?"

"I'm not complaining about anything, Mr. Blackwood. I just don't want to hold you back." Phoebe had sworn off men for the foreseeable future, so whether this agreement lasted two years or five made no difference to her.Gideon faltered. "Me?""Yeah. I mean, you'll be 30 in two years…" The words seemed to become harder to get out as she spoke. "If you're actually serious about settling down, tying yourself to me for two years isn't exactly a great deal."He fell silent. Then, a vein twitched in his temple, which was a rare sight. He sounded like he was gritting his teeth as he asked, "You… think I'm old?""…Uh, no. I just meant that the next two years are kind of your prime…" Phoebe trailed off.Gideon swallowed the sting inside him. "That's not something you need to worry about."She immediately straightened up. "Right!""So, you're fine with two years?""Totally!"He studied her skeptically, as if he didn't quite buy it.Phoebe knew that look all too well—it was the same one

  • Better Brother, Better Life   Chapter 304

Gideon thought about how ironic it was that plenty of people liked him, but the one he liked didn't like him back. He said, "But I don't like any of them.""…Yeah, I can tell. That's just who you are." Phoebe suddenly felt a little embarrassed. Everyone knew how aloof and detached Gideon was. For a second there, she had actually been vain enough to think that he'd asked her to be his girlfriend because he actually liked her.She couldn't be further off the mark!"I've never been in a relationship, and I've been single my whole life. People around me assume I'm into guys. The truth is, I'm straight. I just haven't met anyone I liked. Connor's already started and ended a whole marriage. My mother's only going to push harder now," Gideon said.Phoebe stayed quiet, but she couldn't shake the feeling that she'd stumbled into some prime gossip about herself. Still, Gideon was 28, and he'd never dated anyone… A man who was that disciplined in this day and age was a rare commodity.Gideon

  • Better Brother, Better Life   Chapter 303

Gideon was someone who didn't know what he truly wanted. So, even when he sensed that Phoebe was different and special to him in a way no one else was, he still couldn't be sure if it was love. He couldn't make up his mind. That had changed after the trip to Ravenport. The truth was that night on Jason's cruise ship—when he'd been drugged—was no accident. Gideon had arranged it deliberately. He had been uncertain about his own feelings and wanted to test himself. If he lost all rationality, would he feel something different for Phoebe? In the past, he'd been drugged before. Women had thrown themselves at him, and he'd easily suppressed his instincts. Even under the influence, he'd felt nothing for them. Nobody had been an exception. But when Phoebe was in their place, Gideon's willpower had crumbled almost instantly, and he'd gone under. He'd failed to hold himself back, so he'd pinned her down. He'd lost control that night, which was exactly the answer he'd been looking for. In

  • Better Brother, Better Life   Chapter 302

Jealousy was an emotion that had only flickered briefly in Gideon's childhood. After that, he'd stopped envying Connor for having a whole family. He never imagined that the jealousy would roar back, with such force, as he approached 30. For the first time in Gideon's calm, uneventful life, his world had been upended. From a young age, Gideon had passively endured countless unanswered questions. Why didn't he have parents or a family when everyone else did?Why did his own younger brother look at him with pure hatred the first time they met? Connor had smashed the handmade gift Gideon had spent days crafting, calling him a bastard, saying he didn't deserve to be his brother.Gideon had understood it all later, but back then, he was just a child. Children were naturally full of questions about the world, but he hadn't had anyone to ask. So, he had swallowed all his confusion.Perhaps his habit of silently bearing everything had gradually shaped who he was. Over time, nothing truly s

Phoebe thought that she'd misheard Gideon. She stared at him blankly, looking lost. "What?"He repeated, "I want you to be my girlfriend."This time, she heard him loud and clear. Her first reaction was still pure shock. Was he actually implying she should repay him with her body—like his help meant she now owed him herself? In cruder terms, it felt a little like he was leveraging a favor for something more.At that moment, Phoebe had money, a thriving career, and she was young. There were endless possibilities ahead. She had just hit a rough patch with one rotten guy. Her world still held a universe full of other things. Nothing, and no one, was worth tying herself down again. Her second reaction was to think about the fallout. If she actually dated Gideon, their circle of friends—especially Simon, the loudmouth that he was—would never shut up about it. Flynn would kick up a huge fuss, too. Then there was the entire Russell family… and the Blackwood family in Jeriton, about whic

For example, if Connor wanted to get back together with Phoebe, he could change his approach and start pursuing her properly. It would be a fresh start for them.Since she didn't have anyone else in her heart, things could go south for Gideon…Gideon had planned to wait patiently for her to fall in love with him. But with the situation having changed, he needed to take the initiative.Fortunately, Philip's birthday was coming up soon, and even Leona was coming to Seavale.Gideon continued applying the ointment to Phoebe's wrists as he casually asked, "Did Connor see you kiss me in the car?"She kept her head down. "Yeah. That's what set him off.""Do you think the fallout is too much? Will you still dare to play along with me and provoke him again?"Phoebe said, "It's not a situation of someone getting to win just because they throw the bigger tantrum. People adapt fast. Tonight hit Connor hard because it was the first time; blowing up like that is normal. The more times it happ
