Chapter 54

Author: River Fish
Simon's words weren't some cheesy love-at-first-sight nonsense. He simply wanted to give it a shot. After all, perhaps there would be a spark between him and Phoebe. Feelings took time to develop, and he found her to be pretty intriguing.

Gideon looked up the moment the words left Simon's mouth. He said, "Go for it."

Simon bristled. "I'm talking about pursuing a woman you're not interested in. I'm not asking for your permission."

Gideon replied coolly, "And I'm not stopping you from cuckolding Connor Russell."

Simon was taken aback for a few seconds. Then, his expression darkened, and his tone soured. "Phoebe is his woman?"

Ian was also surprised. "Your so-called brother? I do remember him being married, but why has he never mentioned that Phoebe is his wife? Plus, he's been showing up everywhere with another woman lately."

Jeremy finally chimed in. "Phoebe and Connor have been married for three years."

It was only when the words were out of his mouth that he understood why he'd

Gideon was dressed a little more casually that day but still carried that refined air.At work, Phoebe would always go along with whatever he needed, down to the most minor details. So, hearing him say "please" like that threw her off.She said, "Mr. Blackwood, you can just tell me what you want.""This isn't the office. I shouldn't be bossing you around," he said. She understood what he was getting at now and asked curiously, "Does that mean I can refuse?"He looked surprised. "Of course. Are you going to?"Phoebe was just messing with him. Pouring a glass of water was no big deal. Instead of saying anything, she walked over to the fancy drink station, poured two glasses of lemon-infused water, and came back. She handed him one glass.Gideon took it, sipped, then said, "I'll have a drink or two later. You shouldn't. You're driving me home later."Phoebe had no reason to argue with that.Evan stood right there, watching every bit of their exchange. The spark in his eyes was go

Phoebe nodded and headed inside. The guy who'd been bundled up in a mask and sunglasses finally took it all off, revealing a face that was almost too perfect, with full stage makeup. He reached over and patted Evan's chest, leaning in close. "Dude, you like her."It was Aaron Rodney, the current A-list heartthrob. Based on his getup, he had probably snuck over straight from some event.Simon had connections everywhere—especially among the drama magnets of the entertainment industry. This was Evan's first time meeting Aaron, and the latter was already being way too casual. Still, Evan just smiled like they'd been buddies for years.Aaron took the friendliness as an invitation. He raised an eyebrow, used to turning on the charm like all celebrities were. "I can help you out."Evan's smile widened as he leaned in. Aaron got excited as he waited for Evan to ask for a favor. However, all he heard was, "Is it true you sleep with your female fans?"Aaron froze. The smile on his face vi

Phoebe went quiet and turned to watch the city lights streak by outside the window. Everything was moving fast, and slowly her mood settled.Having Gideon handle the big stuff felt totally normal at this point, but she wasn't used to him also taking care of the little, everyday things. This sort of thoughtfulness was different from him sticking up for her. Both showed he was a genuinely good guy—there wasn't much difference in the two situations. But helping her buy a housewarming gift for a friend in advance struck her right in the chest. When Melinda was still around, Phoebe had been used to that kind of care. After that, it was just Alexandra by her side… That was why Alexandra had become her closest friend. And now, there was Gideon, too.Nobody spoke in the car. A clean, understated cologne lingered in the air, and the neon lights flashing past suddenly made Phoebe think of Melinda. Before she knew it, her eyes stung. She kept staring out the window so no one would notice.

Phoebe glanced back at Gideon again. From her angle, all she could see was his striking, icy profile. But under the tablecloth was a different story. She had just tried to pull away, and he'd yanked her right back. Before, his palm had been pressing down on the back of her hand. Now, he'd flipped it over.He pressed his palm to hers and forcefully threaded his long fingers between hers, locking them tight. The heat from his skin hit her full force, and for some reason, it felt scorching. Her fingers curled instinctively. He probably thought that she was still trying to escape and squeezed harder, leaving no room between their hands at all. His movement was possessive and commanding—exactly like the intense vibe he always gave off.Alexandra's thoughts echoed Phoebe's. Horace and Brooke were powerful people, after all. They deserved at least a polite toast back. But Phoebe sat there as steady as a rock, clearly not planning to budge. That sight floored Alexandra. Phoebe had way mor

But what grated on Jared's nerves the most was that Gideon was actually backing Phoebe up!He was so pissed that he was about to lose it. He gripped his glass so hard that it shook.Phoebe noticed this and tilted her head slightly. "You don't want to?""Jared." Horace's voice turned stern again, warning him.Jared stared into Phoebe's calm eyes, searching for any hint of a bluff. But there was nothing. Her gaze remained still and unreadable.Back in the day, Phoebe had been like a shadow trailing Connor everywhere. Now, Jared felt like he didn't even know her anymore! They locked eyes for a second or two before Jared caved. He reluctantly spat out, "Phoebe, I'm sorry.""Louder.""Sorry! I'm apologizing to you!"Phoebe didn't say anything else.Jared gritted his teeth and chugged the glass of hard liquor. He wasn't much of a liquor guy, and that full glass burned his throat like fire. By the time he drowned the last drop, sweat had beaded on his forehead. He flipped the glass

Horace stiffened all over, a flicker of disbelief flashing in his eyes. He was a seasoned networker and rarely ran into situations like this.Sure, Phoebe was Gideon's secretary, but that didn't mean that she could just hijack the room in front of everyone and force the issue.Jared had indeed offended Alexandra and needed to apologize, but even Gideon hadn't said a single word about it. How could Phoebe just jump in like that? To Horace, it felt like she was deliberately stirring things up."Ms. Stanton, it's rare for both Mr. Durban and Mr. Blackwood to join us. Why don't we eat first?" he suggested.Phoebe looked up, her tone light but her stance unshakable. "If I recall correctly, Mr. Shaw, tonight's dinner is specifically to apologize to Ms. Cooper. I respect Mr. Durban greatly, but things should be handled in order. Debts shouldn't be left unpaid."Horace's expression turned steely.Brooke wasn't all that surprised, though. Alexandra's earlier jabs had just been verbal spar
