Chapter 3

Clara’s first day at school was a blur of noise, lights, and strange faces. The buildings towered high, polished and modern, filled with students in uniforms she didn’t understand. Even walking down the hallways felt like navigating a maze. Every sound—laughter, chatter, slamming lockers—pounded in her chest like a drum.

She clutched the pendant under her uniform, drawing comfort from its faint warmth. She couldn’t let anyone see her panic—not here, not now.

“Hey, over here!” a familiar voice called. Clara turned to see Mike weaving through the crowd toward her. He looked oddly at ease in this chaos, adjusting his glasses as though he had walked these halls a thousand times.

“You came!” Clara whispered, relief flooding her.

Mike smirked. “Of course. Can’t let you get lost on your first day. Besides, I want to see if you survive my school without accidentally causing a disaster.”

Clara rolled her eyes but couldn’t hide her smile. “Thanks… I think.”

He led her through the hall, showing her where the classrooms, cafeteria, and library were. Even with his guidance, Clara felt overwhelmed by the technology—smart boards, scanners, digital lockers. Every little device seemed alive, buzzing with data she didn’t understand.

Their first class was science, and Clara quickly realized she wasn’t prepared for the pace. Students asked questions about things she had never heard of, experiments with materials and chemicals she had never seen. Her heart sank. She was a stranger here, not just in place but in knowledge.

Mike leaned over, whispering, “Don’t panic. Just follow my lead. I’ve got you.”

Clara nodded, grateful. For the first time since arriving in the future, she felt a glimmer of stability.

But stability was short-lived.

A loud crash echoed through the hallway. Students screamed, scattering in all directions. Clara froze as she saw a shadowy figure dart past the glass doors of the gym, moving with unnatural speed. It vanished before anyone could react.

Mike’s eyes narrowed. “Stay close,” he murmured, pulling Clara behind him.

“Who… what is that?” she asked, her voice shaking.

Mike shook his head. “I don’t know. But it’s… like the energy I felt in your house last night. That… something is tracking you.”

Clara’s chest tightened. The pendant pulsed under her uniform, its warmth now tinged with urgency. She realized that even here, surrounded by hundreds of people, the past wasn’t finished with her.

By lunchtime, Clara had begun to adjust to her new classmates. She met James, a tall, athletic boy with a calm intensity, and Bridget, a cheerful girl with a quick wit and commanding presence. James had a subtle confidence in the way he moved, and Clara caught a glimpse of something in his eyes—experience, maybe even combat training. Bridget, on the other hand, laughed easily and seemed to notice everything, giving quick instructions to students who accidentally blocked her path.

Mike introduced them, and Clara felt a strange sense of relief. Somehow, being with people who seemed competent, who could handle themselves, made the city feel a little less overwhelming.

As they ate in the cafeteria, a sudden loud alarm blared through the school. Red lights flashed, and automated messages warned: “Evacuate immediately. Danger detected.”

Clara froze, panic rising. “What now?”

Mike grabbed her hand. “We need to go. Now.”

They sprinted toward the exit, weaving through panicked students. Outside, the sky above the city shimmered unnaturally, like it had been warped by some invisible force. A figure hovered above the school, cloaked in shadows, moving faster than any human should. Clara recognized it instantly—one of the villains from her past.

Her knees went weak, and she barely caught herself before falling. The pendant burned hotter against her chest, responding to her fear.

Mike’s eyes widened as he scanned the figure. “It’s one of them,” he said grimly. “They’ve come for you… and they’re not alone.”

James stepped forward, fists clenched, ready for combat. “Let’s handle this.”

Bridget raised a hand, pointing sharply. “We need a plan. Chaos won’t help us fight them. Clara, can you…?”

Clara shook her head. She didn’t know what she could do yet, couldn’t fully control the powers that had carried her across time. But the fire inside her flared, the same one that had kept her alive in her village. She clenched her fists, feeling the faint pulse of energy beneath her skin, warning her, preparing her.

The shadowed figure struck suddenly, smashing a section of the school fence with a wave of dark energy. Students screamed and scattered. The villains were stronger here, in this world, and they weren’t holding back.

Mike and James acted immediately—Mike deploying small gadgets that fired nets of energy, James using martial skill to intercept falling debris. Bridget directed the panicked students toward safety. Clara watched, heart pounding, realizing that she couldn’t run forever. She would have to fight.

For the first time, she let the energy pulse outward, faintly, brushing the villain’s dark form. The shadow wavered, momentarily stunned, then recoiled with a hiss, almost human in its fury.

Clara’s eyes widened. She had done it—just a little, but enough.

The villain vanished in a blur, leaving destruction behind. The students were safe, but the city felt smaller, more dangerous than ever.

Clara’s friends gathered around her, breathing heavily. Mike placed a hand on her shoulder. “That was… impressive,” he said quietly. “But we’re going to need training. They’ll be back. And next time, they’ll be stronger.”

Clara swallowed hard, gripping her pendant. She knew he was right. The villains had followed her here, and the city offered no sanctuary from what was coming.

A faint movement at the edge of the street caught her eye—a shadow flickering between buildings.

“They’re watching,” she whispered.

Mike’s gaze hardened. “And they’re closer than ever.”

—END OF CHAPTER 3—

A shadow flickered between buildings. “They’re closer than ever,” Clara whispered.

  • Between Worlds   THE GUARDIAN AWAKENS

Chapter 10 The dawn broke over the city, golden sunlight glinting off glass towers and streets that had once been battlefields. Clara stood atop the highest rooftop she could reach, her pendant glowing softly against her chest. She had spent the night meditating, channelling the energy she had inherited from her grandmother, the strength of her lineage flowing steadily through her veins. Her team—Mike, James, and Bridget—stood behind her, eyes scanning the horizon. They had tracked the Shadow Council to an abandoned industrial complex near the edge of the city. This time, they were prepared. Clara’s heart beat rapidly. The Shadow Leader had stolen a fragment of her grandmother’s power before, but tonight, she would reclaim it and end this threat once and for all. Mike adjusted his tech visor. “All drones are in position. Energy sensors are active. They’re inside, Clara. And it’s quiet… too quiet.” Bridget’s eyes narrowed. “That’s exactly what makes me nervous. Shadows rarely stay

  • Between Worlds   BETRAYAL AND CAPTURE

Chapter 9 The city’s night air was heavy with tension. Clara and her team had been tracking the Shadow Council for days, hoping to recover the stolen fragment of her grandmother’s pendant. Every alleyway, every rooftop felt like a potential trap. Mike scrolled through the drone feed, brow furrowed. “They’ve been setting patterns. Repeated movements near the old docks. I think they’re planning something big.” Bridget’s eyes narrowed. “Sounds like bait.” James gripped his staff tightly. “Then let’s not fall for it. We’ll split up—Clara, you stay with me. Bridget, cover Mike. We move fast and hit hard.” Clara felt the familiar surge of golden energy within her. She had trained hard, but the shadow of doubt still lingered. Could she fully control her power? Could she protect her friends? The team approached the docks quietly, the moon reflecting off the water. The silence was broken by the faint sound of chains rattling. Shadows flickered in the corner of Clara’s vision. “Stay aler

  • Between Worlds   CHASING SHADOWS

Chapter 8 The city had never felt so tense. Even the hum of traffic seemed quieter, as though it were holding its breath. The aftermath of the Shadow Council’s second strike left the streets scarred: shattered windows, overturned cars, and the faint echo of terror lingering in the alleyways. Clara sat on the rooftop of Mike’s house, staring at her pendant. It no longer glowed faintly—it pulsed strongly, as if calling her, reminding her of what she had lost: the fragment of her grandmother’s artefact stolen by the Shadow Leader. Mike joined her silently, holding a small tablet filled with surveillance feeds. “We’ve traced their energy signature to the east side of the city,” he said. “They’re regrouping—preparing another strike.” Clara clenched her fists. “Then we have to stop them before anyone else gets hurt. I’m ready to try controlling my power fully this time.” James leaned against the railing, twirling his staff. “Finally. No more holding back. We hit them hard and fast

  • Between Worlds   THE SECOND STRIKE

Chapter 7 The night air felt heavier than usual, thick with a strange tension that no one could quite explain. After the Shadow Council’s threatening message, the team knew they had little time before the next attack. Clara barely slept. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw the burning village, her grandmother’s face, the looming shadows… and now the message echoing in her mind: “The bloodline will fall.” Morning light spilt into Mike’s apartment as the team regrouped, exhaustion etched into each of their faces. Mike stood in front of a large holographic map of the city, pointing at glowing red indicators. “These are the energy spikes detected in the last three hours,” he explained. “They’re moving in a pattern… almost like they’re scanning the city.” Bridget leaned forward. “Looking for Clara.” James folded his arms. “Then we stop them before they find her. End of story.” Clara hugged her arms around herself. “They’re getting stronger. We saw how fast they moved at the ban

  • Between Worlds   REVELATION OF CLARA’S LINEAGE

Chapter 6 The city skyline glittered under the night sky, but Clara’s mind was anything but calm. After the first battle, her hands still trembled from the raw surge of power she had barely controlled. The team gathered in Mike’s high-tech apartment, every surface glowing with screens and gadgets. “Okay,” Mike said, flipping through holographic files, “we need answers. Who are these villains, and why are they after you?” Clara swallowed. “They mentioned… my bloodline. Something I carry. But I don’t understand.” James paced the floor. “It’s obvious—they’re looking for a power. Maybe your family hid something, and now they want it back.” Bridget leaned on the railing overlooking the city, her face serious. “If they know your grandmother or parents were special… then they’ve probably been tracking your family for generations. That’s why they attacked your village.” Clara’s heart sank. “So all the people in my village… my family…” Mike crouched next to her, placing a comforting han

  • Between Worlds   First battle

Chapter 5 The city slept, but Clara couldn’t. She sat on the rooftop of Mike’s house, hugging her knees as the night wind brushed her hair. The glowing symbol the villains left—AWAKEN—still burned in her mind. What did they want her to become? The door creaked behind her. Mike stepped out carrying a small device and two mugs. “Couldn’t sleep either?” Clara shook her head. “No.” He sat beside her and handed her a cup. “Warm chocolate.” She held it carefully. “Thank you.” Mike hesitated. “Clara… whoever those things were—they knew your name. They knew your blood. If we’re going to protect you, we need to be ready.” Her eyes lifted. “You still want to help me?” “Of course,” he said without hesitation. “You didn’t run when things got dangerous. Neither will we.” Footsteps approached. James and Bridget joined them, both dressed in dark clothes. Bridget clapped once. “Alright team—Operation Trap The Shadow Clowns starts tonight.” James grinned, spinning his baton. “Time to figh
