Chapter 1 Disappear From His Life

Author: Hedgebud
After I left, someone at the door noticed the cake.

"Edward, Vanessa was here. She didn't hear what we just said, did she?"

"So what if she did?" Edward replied indifferently. "It's not like she'll actually get mad. Give her a couple of days, and she'll come crawling back to me anyway."

Their voices faded into the distance. There was only silence in my heart.

After knowing him for ten years, I thought I had a place in his heart. Now that I had heard what he truly thought about me, I felt that I had wasted ten years of my life.

How pitiful of me.

I shook my head and went straight to the institute that very night.

"Sir, I've decided to restart the operation."

The teacher, already past fifty, looked stunned. "Vanessa, are you sure? What about your boyfriend?"

"We broke up," I replied without hesitation. "From now on, I have nothing tying me down. I'm the best candidate, so please let me do it."

When my teacher heard this, his lips trembled, and tears filled his eyes.

This classified project began ten years ago.

Over those ten years, my teacher had sent off my seniors one by one. I would never forget the sight of him dragging his exhausted body forward, his face filled with grief.

For the past decade, I had never slackened, whether in professional training or physical conditioning.

I had been waiting for the perfect moment. Now, it was finally my turn.

Seeing the determination in my eyes, my teacher ultimately agreed. Then, I signed the confidentiality agreement.

Once I left, no one would know how long I would be gone. It could be at least three years, or it could be forever. Either way, I would not regret it.

By the time I got home from the institute, it was nearly midnight. As I saw clothes scattered on the messy living room floor, my heart sank.

I stood still at the entryway, hearing the moaning sounds coming from the bedroom, yet my emotions remained calm.

Soon, I began to clean up.

My existence had to be completely erased, leaving no trace behind.

I burned all the photos and packed up the computers. Everything else was cleared out, except the bedroom.

Though I didn't want to, I had to deal with it quickly.

I waited patiently for them to finish inside, then let out a long breath.

'Edward, you'll soon get your wish,' I thought.

When we first got together, Edward had been considerate enough.

His parents did not like me. They thought I was unworthy of him. His mother even hired an etiquette tutor to train me, believing I was nothing but an embarrassment.

Back then, I obediently studied for three months for Edward's sake.

Three months of hellish training were nothing to me. Even if they tried to nitpick, they couldn't find fault, so we could only tolerate each other.

Now, none of that matters anymore.

I touched my face and pushed the door open, walking straight in.

In that split second, a scream rang out. The two people inside scrambled to cover themselves.

Seeing it was me, Edward snapped, "Vanessa, don't you know how to knock?"

"I didn't know I had to knock to enter my own bedroom. Maybe I should ask my etiquette tutor. It seems like I'm getting a bit rusty."

Hearing this, Edward laughed. "Are you jealous because of this?"

"You're not worth my jealousy," I said calmly. "Edward, we're breaking up. Take your woman with you and get out of my house."

A cold glint flashed in his eyes.

The woman beside him snuggled into his arms and shot me a smug look. "Edward, she's so fierce. I'm scared."

Edward parted his lips slightly. "Get out."

I turned and walked out. From inside came the woman's laugh. "She's like a dog!"

The next second, Edward grabbed her by the arm and threw her out.

After a long while, the doctor came out and shook his head at me. "He is asking for you. He has something to say."My legs trembled as I walked in. The moment I saw his gaunt face, tears spilled uncontrollably down my cheeks.Ten years together. We had long since carved ourselves into each other's hearts."Blake…"Hearing my voice, he opened his eyes."Don't cry, Vanessa," he said softly. "I'm free now. You say you've let go, but I know there has always been something weighing on your heart. Once it's said, let it go. Live well. If not, we'll just start over."I looked at him and smiled through tears. I nodded and said, "Don't worry. I'm not afraid of death. I'll live well for both of us. If it comes to it, we'll just start over."Blake Hilton. That was his real name. I had not said it in a long time.I held his hand, watching him silently until everything grew still.Edward had been watching from outside. When he saw me walk out looking calm and composed, he looked uneasy."

Edward's voice pulled me back.I thought for a moment. It was at a bar.At that time, my senior and I were on a mission. Back then, I had multicolored hair and a miniskirt. According to Edward, my bright eyes made me stand out, making me look like someone who didn't belong in a place like that. Still, I was bold enough as I pinned a handsy thug to the ground and beat him senselessly.I was furious at that time. Because of him, the target we were tracking got away. Yet Edward was still there, cheering me on, even trying to buy me a drink.I shot him a glare and walked off.Thinking back, I couldn't help but smile."Edward, are you joking with me? It's been so long. I don't remember anymore."Edward didn't pause. His voice was low as he continued, "I remember. You said if I were ever unfaithful, you would disappear and never let me find you again. Vanessa, you really are ruthless. You meant it."Back then, I was young and full of hope for a better life. As my seniors fell on

We hit it off immediately. With our teacher as our witness, my partner and I registered our marriage, had a simple meal together, and just like that, we were married.I supposed we were simply making do.Given the nature of my identity, Edward and I were never going to be possible. Even if none of this had happened, there was no going back. I had my principles, and I could never accept him again.Somehow, Edward found out about this marriage. On the very day my partner and I registered our marriage, a package arrived from far away.It was sent directly to our new place. I froze for a moment when I opened it.Inside was a necklace—exquisite, beautifully designed—with my initials engraved on it.I sighed and said, "If he keeps this up, I'm really going to have to step in."My partner shrugged and replied, "It's fine. Let him hold onto something. Maybe it'll help him let go eventually.""You told him?" I looked at him in surprise."I just hinted that you and I will never split up

"Sir, I did it.""You did. Among all my students, you were the one I believed in most. From now on, take good care of yourself." He took a deep breath and patted my shoulder."After you left, Edward came to the school like a madman, saying you'd gone missing. He even called the police. It caused quite a stir. I knew the truth, but I couldn't tell him. They say he had been searching for you ever since. This time…" My teacher didn't finish his words and only looked at me.I understood what his unfinished words were.Back then, I had chosen the mission without explaining the truth, so my teacher thought I had broken up with Edward purely for the sake of the country. Now, there was no need to explain either."I understand, but it's impossible between us now. The past is the past. To me, my country will always matter more than him. Besides, he was never right for me."The moment my identity was exposed, Edward had nearly caused years of restraint and sacrifice to collapse. If not f

I took a step back, putting distance between us.Edward looked dejected. Then, he made a request. "Can you at least let me hug you? I don't even know if she's still alive."Hearing this, I took a deep breath and shook my head."I'm sorry, Mr. Miles. We're not that close. Aside from our first meeting, we're basically strangers. I don't want my husband to misunderstand us."His eyes dimmed instantly. Faced with my coldness, he could only stand there, looking helpless. His hand, suspended in midair, slowly dropped. He let out a bitter laugh and said, "I was asking for too much. Sorry about that. I didn't expect things to turn out like this. I guess it's my turn now."My heart skipped a beat. Out of instinct, I warned him, "Don't talk about life and death like that."Edward gave a bitter smile to me before leaving.I took a deep breath as I watched him go.
