Farah's POV

I was bored out of my mind. Zafeer had left for madrasah hours ago, and I still had almost two months before school resumed. I missed Zinat and Rodeeyah more than I expected to.

I kept turning over what Mami and Aunty Hameedah had been discussing in the parlor. Not that I was trying to eavesdrop, but Mami never asked me to leave a room for a conversation. Never.

My phone buzzed with the adhan notification for Asr.

I made ablution, wore my khimar, and prayed. By the time I'd finished

Abdulrahim's POVTwo days ago, Mama told me she and Baba had decided it was time for me to get married.I was furious. Genuinely, blindingly furious, in a way I hadn't let myself be in years.First, Baba had interfered with my career plans. I wanted to study medicine, spent my entire secondary school life planning for it, correcting biology teachers, memorizing bone structures for fun, and he'd waved all of it away and insisted on Business Administration instead, so I'd be ready to take over his company one day. I'd swallowed that. Adjusted. Told myself it wasn't worth the fight. And now this. They had arranged my marriage too, discussed it, decided it, and settled it, without a single conversation with me beforehand. As if I were a decision to be made rather than a person to be consulted. At first, I refused completely. I told Mama, calmly at first, then less calmly, that I wasn't marrying anyone I hadn't chosen myself. But with Baba, refusal only ever delays the inevitable. He doesn

By the time I'd finished my adhkar, folded my mat, and settled onto my bed, Mami was already at my door."Mami, has Aunty left?" I asked."Yes.""So soon?""She only came to tell me something important.""Oh. Okay then."She sat beside me on the bed, and something in the way she settled there, unhurried, deliberate, made me look at her twice."So what brings you here? You need something?""No. I just want to ask you something," she said."No problem, Mami. I'm listening."She studied my face for a moment before speakin

Author's POVA Week After the WeddingAlhaji Sanni had asked Hameedah to come sit with him, said there was something on his mind he wanted to settle."Hameedah, I've been thinking about something for a few days now," he said, once she'd taken her seat."I'm listening.""Abdulrahim should get married soon. When he finishes school and takes over the company, I want him already settled. A family man, not a boy still figuring himself out."Hameedah nodded slowly, turning the thought over."I've been thinking the same thing, actually. Should we start looking for someone suitable?""I already have someone in mind.""Masha'Allah." She sat up a little straighter. "Who?""Farah. The one whose sister's wedding we attended not long ago. We know the family well, and from what you've told me over the years, she's well raised."Hameedah's face broke into a smile before she'd even finished processing it."That's... that's actually perfect.""Will you speak to her mother about it?""Of course. Farah's POVOur bride wore gold that night, a dress and matching turban and veil, while the rest of us, her girls, were dressed in wine. The hall was already full when it was time for our entrance. Our first song was "Aye" by Davido. The moment it started, we swept in with photographers lined up in front of us, the crowd cheering and clapping as we hit our choreography and froze in formation at the center of the hall. Then "Buga" by Kizz Daniel dropped, and we split into two lines with Ya Nadia between us, picking the choreography back up. The cheering climbed with every count. We closed ranks again as the groom and his men made their entrance to "All Over" by Tiwa Savage, the bride and groom meeting in the middle while the rest of us framed them, still dancing. The whole room was on its feet. When it ended, the couple took their seats, and the rest of us took ours, breathless.---"Wow! Now that was a marvellous performance. I did not expect that. Or did all of you expect it?" the MC

Farah's POVI slept far later than I meant to. My whole body felt like it had been folded and unfolded a dozen times, and when I finally dragged myself downstairs, the house was already humming with reception prep. Mami was on the phone with the caterers, Zafeer was underfoot with a tray of chin chin he wasn't supposed to be eating yet, and I still had hours before I needed to think about getting dressed.I was halfway through breakfast when the doorbell rang."Farah, get that," Mami called from the kitchen, too deep in her caterer negotiation to move.I opened the gate and found Abdulrahim standing there with Nuri's small backpack slung over one shoulder and Nuri herself half asleep against his side."Aunty Hameedah has last minute errands before tonight," he said. "She asked if Nuri could stay here till the reception.""Oh. Okay." I stepped back to let them in. "Zafeer's around somewhere, she can hang out with him."Nuri perked up at the mention of Zafeer and wandered off toward the

Farah's POVBy Wednesday, the whole house had shifted into a new gear.Today the groom's family was bringing the kayan lefe, the bride's gifts, so Ya Nadia had gone to wait at Ya Rufaydah's place while I stayed back to cook for the guests."Farah, go tell your sister to hurry and leave. Does she want them to meet her here?" Mami called from the kitchen.I went and passed the message along, and ten minutes later Ya Nadia was gone.By one, the guests arrived with fifteen boxes between them. We fed them, Mami sat with them a while, and then they left.Zara and I hauled the boxes into Mami's room and called Ya Nadia to come home. She made us swear not to open a single one before she got there. When she finally arrived, we tore into them one after another. Wallahi, I wished I owned half of what was inside, lace, ankara, abayas, jewelry, bags, shoes, skincare, more than I could count. We admired every piece, packed it all back up, and Zara and I filmed the whole haul to send to Asma. The ne
