Olivia and I stared into the large screen monitor in the hospital’s security office, having found the exact frame where the M was brought into the hospital.

Olivia recognized one of the Auclair guards and pointed him out, but the woman beside him, who was pretending to be his wife to complete the image of a family bringing their son to the hospital, was unfamiliar.

M’s face wasn’t visible on the security footage in all the four security cameras which had captured him from different angles.

Olivia huffed in frustration.

“Take us to your director.” I turned to one of the security officials in the room with us.

He stood at attention and said, “He’s not on seat.”

“Then take us to whoever is on seat.” I said, and he gave me a nod, walking out the door.

We followed behind, and arrived in an office with a floor-to-ceiling window that looked out to a park.

In the wet darkness of tonight, the park looked ghostly, something from a horror thriller, and I looked away, my eyes stopping on th

“Dean told me you’ve got schizophrenia.” Olivia’s voice sliced through the quiet of the car, and impaled my heart like an arrow. Luckily, my foot was quick to slam on the brake as my hands forcefully steered our car left, to the side of the road. A truck honked past us on the mostly empty road, and my hands fell off the steering wheel as I turned to her.We silently stared at each other for another second.“You believed that?” My heart was breaking at the memory of how terrified she was of me that day in the ladies room. How she looked at me like I would attack her any moment, and chop her limbs up.And it hurt me to think she would believe such a thing. I guess we will always be strangers after all. The teenager who humiliated her in public, who she couldn't blindly trust, especially when he wasn’t there to defend himself.I had just taken my foot off the brakes when she said, “Won’t you even ask me why?” Her voice came out confused. And I couldn’t bring myself to look at her when

“We won’t find him. Louise must have murdered the maid when she found out, and then moved him,” Olivia said without pause as I swiftly backed my car in the now pouring rain. One of my guards flashed his car headlights as he drove past me, and I honked back.“We’ll try, Livia.” I moved my hand over the center console, and took hers.“How did you figure it out? How did you figure out where he was?” She asked, and I sighed, keeping my eyes on the road because I was driving pretty fast despite this unexpected downpour.I thought about that ambulance I had seen twice on the road here. Once, when I dropped Henry off at the hospital, and next just before I drove over to the lane Olivia was driving in.“It might not make any sense, but I think your brother may have had an episode and was taken to the hospital.” I said out loud, and her eyes were haunted before she looked away.It killed me to see her like this. It killed me more to know I could not do anything about it without hurting our r

Olivia did not miss my reaction to this news, smart woman, this one. “I’m sorry,” she repeated, and I grimaced, embarrassed at my reaction.“One thing we're not going to do is pretend he isn't still your brother.” She frowned her disapproval, and then sighed heavily.“I hesitated to do it even,” she explained more gently. “That was until he attempted to murder my best friend. It became necessary." “It is necessary.” I affirmed, and paused, “Attempted?”Her gaze was piercing, surprised that I knew anything about the issue. “Henry tailed you,” I shrugged. “But Dean caught him, and he narrowly managed an escape.” Her eyes widened, hanging jaw, and finally, with a wince, she looked away with an understanding nod. “Dean used a kettlebell,” she said in a trembling voice, her gaze averted. “A fucking kettlebell, and just as they were about to wrap his body, Harper whispered my name.” Her mouth went tight around the corners. And watching her, I felt pure envy. Envy that she got to be the

I knew that I was being a dickhead and proving all her fears right that she couldn’t trust me. We should talk about earlier, clear out the miscommunication that made us fight like enemies and hurt each other badly. But now I can't. I could not see past my terror, past the cold fist in my chest at the thought of her falling dead on a random day because Louise was in a bad mood, or suddenly remembered her sister’s death. It was driving me crazy that someone else could be Olivia's god, and I wanted to go kick her off that throne and stomp, stomp and stomp on her until she was reminded of her mortality, and that no one was allowed to make Olivia’s life hell, not even me.Olivia was staring at me now, her eyes narrowed into slits. Then she stood up, heading for the door.I caught her arm two steps in, and pulled her back. “Get your hands off me.” She slapped my hand off her, her face tight like she had just barely resisted the urge to shove me hard as her eyes fell on my bandage. “I ne

I frowned at Olivia's hesitation. I hadn’t taken her for a soft-hearted woman, so I was unwilling to believe she would hesitate the slightest to take out her enemy. But even now, she was shaking her head, her arms tighter around my waist. “Louise wants an Auclair with Fletcher blood."“And you’ll give her this, because?” I could not believe she was thinking of having a child for the benefit of such a woman. I would offer my child as the devil’s squire before I let them anywhere around that woman.Olivia was watching me now, and there was a new hesitation in her eyes. But in a flash, she took one of my hands from around her and placed it on her head.I stared at her, confused at the gesture. She stared at me for a second longer before she said, “We can never attack Louise, nor can I run away from her. She has a chip in here.” She smiled sadly. My world stopped as a pop went off in my ears, and they started to ring. I stared at Olivia without really seeing her, my vision blurry as t
