Sophia's POV

I looked at the doctor, then at the man who had just called himself my father and I laughed very hard. This must have been a joke but only that none of them had a smile. Their faces were both serious and I thought again within me, maybe we were now on a movie role so I decided to ask.

“Where's the camera?”

Both the doctor and Mr. Lance looked at each other. They were not understanding where I was heading to. It was my turn to enjoy the look of confusion on their faces since they all decided to turn this into a movie.

Mr. Lance cleared his throat, “Uhm, what camera are you talking about Sophie?”

“Sophia,” I interject him sharply. “The name is Sophia and not Sophie. And since you have both decided to make this a movie, I'm yet to see a camera.”

“Mr. Lance, I would need to take my leave now,” the doctor turned to leave but I stopped him.

“You can't leave yet, at least we haven't finished the movie you started,” I said and he stopped on his tracks, his eyes twitching in confusion. “Anyway what's my role in this blockbuster we are acting.”

“Sophia,” Mr. Lance called out slowly. “Why do you take this as some joke? Why…”

I couldn't take it anymore so I cut in, “No! You are the one who took my situation as a joke in the first place. First, you waltzed in here claiming to be my saviour, then next you claimed to be my father.” I paused to catch my breath, “tell me how delusional can you be? You think I don't recognize my own father? Or that I lost my brain alongside the baby?”

The doctor had a shocked look on his face after my outburst. Obviously, he might think I was a little harsh or rude with the way I just chastised Mr. Lance but in all honesty, I don't care — even if he was the country's richest man. He had it coming when he kept uttering nonsense like someone that just got out of asylum.

“I know it's hard to believe,” he began, choosing his words slowly. “I didn't believe it either, but first I saw this,” he moved closer pointing to a mark in my forearm, “then finally this, it proved indeed all I said is true.”

He completed his statement by handing me a piece of paper. I hesitated for a moment but he urged me to collect the piece of paper.

“What am I to do with this?”

“It confirms everything that seems to confuse you,” he explains, “you can also see I have this in my arm.”

I didn't notice he had off the top of his suit until he called my attention. He was having the same mark I was having on my right arm.

“It's a tradition in our family to give a new child this mark, right after birth.”

“And this can't be a mere coincidence?” I asked but he shook his head.

“No, I've thought of that. That was why I asked the doctor for a DNA test. The result is what you are holding in your hand.”

My eyes skimmed through the piece of paper in my hands. There was mostly medical jargon that seemed to make no sense to me. But there were also a few words that I understood. Only that I'm still confused and everything still doesn't make sense to me.

“For all I know, this could have been made up,” I countered.

“And what do I stand to gain if I made that up? Don't you think about that?” He asked me then nodded at the doctor. I had suddenly forgotten he was still in the room with us. “Dr. Philips here can get another test done. But if you want a totally new hospital, then that can also be arranged.”

I looked into his eyes and all I saw was sincerity. Even when I tried to come up with thoughts to refute his claim, most of them looked unreasonable. A lot of questions were ringing in my head that I had no answers to. He had no reason to lie. What does he even stand to gain by lying that someone like me would be his daughter? That would totally make no sense, would it?

I sighed loudly as I found myself believing him. But a new anger had suddenly welled up in me. And with that, I looked up straight at him.

“So you abandoned me all these years, and now you suddenly feel it's time to come claim me, huh? Tell me, am I some kind of a property?”

He flinched as he looked everywhere but me. Dr. Philip wasn't in the room with us anymore. He must have stepped out while I was deep in thoughts.

“I didn't abandon you,” his voice was croaky as he faced me. Had he been crying? “Never will I abandon my own child.”

“I was away on a business trip when I got the news,” he paused, trying to stifle his emotion, then continued. “You were both involved in an accident when she was coming back home from a medical checkup. The car had almost burned beyond recognition. Only…”

“Wait! I don't get it, was I not in the car?”

“No, only your mother and the driver were in the car.” He said and handed me a picture. “Her name is Fiona and you are the exact replica of her.”

Looking at the picture in my hand confirmed what he just said. I was indeed a carbon copy of the woman in the picture. A tear dropped from my eye as I imagined what it would have been like to meet her.

“It was an attack.”

“What?” I asked, not understanding what he just said.

“The accident, it was a planned attack.” He said and I watched his fist tighten.

I could see the fury in his eyes as he fought the urge to keep the tears from falling. I could imagine the pain he went through reliving those memories. I shared the same pain with him, afterall, the woman in question was my mother.

We both fell into silence but the shrill sound of my phone brought me out of my thoughts. I looked at the phone to know who was calling and a sudden anger surged within me.

Why was this jerk calling me?

Donald's POV Miles sat across from me in my office, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows across the polished mahogany desk. He slid a manila folder across the surface. It looked innocent enough, but the weight of it felt heavy, charged with bad news."Everything you asked for, Mr. Briggs," Miles said, his voice low and professional. "It's all in there. The evidence is… solid."I opened the folder, my hands surprisingly steady. Inside were printouts, bank statements, transaction logs, and even some coded messages. As I scanned them, a cold dread began to spread through me. The numbers didn't lie. Money had been moved, siphoned off, cleverly disguised. But the name that kept popping up, the one directly linked to these transactions, was Arnold.Arnold? The one in charge of the account departments. The guy I trusted implicitly. The guy who was supposed to be as loyal as the day is long. I feel my heart quickening in pace. It didn't make sense. Arnold was a family man, devoted to

Sophia's POV After my remark, I saw Donald tense a little bit. But then, he quickly covered it up with a smile.“Very well then,” Lucas remarked. “I thought he's giving you trouble.”Donald scoffed. "Trouble? Just catching up with her buddy,” he said, glancing at Lucas. “Nothing for you to worry about," He then turned to me. "Unless, of course, you need someone to rescue you?""Actually," Lucas cut in, holding my hand, a silent reassurance. "I think Sophia and I were just about to head over to talk to some key people here. She's got a lot on her plate tonight, and frankly, so do I. We should probably get going."Donald laughed, a harsh, unpleasant sound. "Key people? Right. What key people would you possibly be talking to?" He looked at Lucas as if he were an idiot. "We were just talking and I'd appreciate it if you step aside.""Talking?" Lucas's voice was dangerous now. "It sounds more like you are forcing the conversation. And I don't appreciate that. Since she didn't want to talk

  • Billionaire ex-husband craves me back   Chapter 50

Donald's POV Since the start of today, I have this excitement bubbling inside of me that I couldn't fully picture. I don't know maybe it was still the thrill of Laura getting me that Hublot wrist-watch I'd always admired, or the joy of meeting some of the big guys in the business later in the day.Laura being who she was, tried to ruin the day for me, but I just set my mind to ignore her charade. I had told her before about attending an event later in the evening, but she suddenly came up with the excuse of meeting a long-time friend now.I pulled out my phone and dialed Jane, my secretary. If Laura isn't going to attend with me, then Jane has to stand in as the female figure from the company. At least, this is still about getting big names for the company.“Boss?” Jane's voice sounded from the speaker as she picked the call.I clear my throat, wanting to present the situation in the most soothing way. “Are you having a great weekend?” I started in a light manner, hoping to get the r

  • Billionaire ex-husband craves me back   Chapter 49

Sophia's POVThe weekend comes rolling by quickly after another stressful week. I was already getting used to the stress, so it didn't weigh me down like when I just started the cleaning job.I sat just opposite my father, watching him drop the magazine he was holding, so he could engage me in a proper conversation. Today, the conversation with my father was quite different. Usually, our talks revolved around work, about the company, and sometimes, about the future. But this afternoon, it was about Lucas. His approval, his happiness for me, was a palpable thing. He spoke of Lucas with a warmth that surprised me, a genuine admiration that made my heart swell.“He’s a good man, Sophia,” my father said, his eyes alight with a pride I rarely saw. “You should probably get to know him. He’s got a good head on his shoulders, and a good heart too. I see the way he looks at you.”My father’s words, his obvious pleasure in my blossoming connection with Lucas, spurred me on. It was a feeling I h

Donald's POV The fluorescent lights of the coffee shop hummed, a monotonous sound that did little to soothe the gnawing anxiety in my gut. I drummed my fingers on the tabletop, the rhythmic tapping a desperate attempt to quell the rising tide of frustration. Miles, the private investigator, sat across from me, his usual calm demeanor starting to fray around my nerves. It had been weeks since our last meeting, and the progress, or rather the lack thereof, was becoming unbearable.“So, Miles,” I began, my voice tight, “any news?” The question was laced with an impatience I couldn’t quite mask. An impatience born out of the urgency to see things work out for me.Miles took a slow sip of his coffee, his eyes meeting mine over the rim of the mug. “Mr. Briggs, I understand your frustration. But these things take time. We’re dealing with a sophisticated operation here.”“Time?” I scoffed, the word tasting like ash in my mouth. “Time is something I don’t have, Miles. This is bleeding my comp

  • Billionaire ex-husband craves me back   Chapter 47

Sophia's POV After another stressful day at work, I was standing on the curb of Lance corporation, waiting for a taxi, when a car slid to a stop in front of me. I didn't pay any attention at first, thinking it was just a random person, but when I heard a familiar voice call my name, I had to take a proper look.Inside the car was Lucas, a small smile crossing his lips as he wind down the tinted glasses of the car. The shock that registered on my face must have been noticeable because his smile soon morphed into a frown. “Not happy to see me I guess?”I shook my head, now wearing a genuine smile. “No, that's not it. I'm just too surprised seeing you here.” I didn't see him at work today, that's why it's a big surprise seeing him parking in front of me in a totally different car.“Had to run some official errands,” he explained, then opened the passenger’s door. “Come on in.”As I got in, Lucas flashed me a quick smile, and I felt my stomach flutter.“I thought you were here to do som
