Sophia's POV

I looked at the doctor, then at the man who had just called himself my father and I laughed very hard. This must have been a joke but only that none of them had a smile. Their faces were both serious and I thought again within me, maybe we were now on a movie role so I decided to ask.

“Where's the camera?”

Both the doctor and Mr. Lance looked at each other. They were not understanding where I was heading to. It was my turn to enjoy the look of confusion on their faces since they all decided to turn this into a movie.

Mr. Lance cleared his throat, “Uhm, what camera are you talking about Sophie?”

“Sophia,” I interject him sharply. “The name is Sophia and not Sophie. And since you have both decided to make this a movie, I'm yet to see a camera.”

“Mr. Lance, I would need to take my leave now,” the doctor turned to leave but I stopped him.

“You can't leave yet, at least we haven't finished the movie you started,” I said and he stopped on his tracks, his eyes twitching in confusion. “Anyway what's my role in this blockbuster we are acting.”

“Sophia,” Mr. Lance called out slowly. “Why do you take this as some joke? Why…”

I couldn't take it anymore so I cut in, “No! You are the one who took my situation as a joke in the first place. First, you waltzed in here claiming to be my saviour, then next you claimed to be my father.” I paused to catch my breath, “tell me how delusional can you be? You think I don't recognize my own father? Or that I lost my brain alongside the baby?”

The doctor had a shocked look on his face after my outburst. Obviously, he might think I was a little harsh or rude with the way I just chastised Mr. Lance but in all honesty, I don't care — even if he was the country's richest man. He had it coming when he kept uttering nonsense like someone that just got out of asylum.

“I know it's hard to believe,” he began, choosing his words slowly. “I didn't believe it either, but first I saw this,” he moved closer pointing to a mark in my forearm, “then finally this, it proved indeed all I said is true.”

He completed his statement by handing me a piece of paper. I hesitated for a moment but he urged me to collect the piece of paper.

“What am I to do with this?”

“It confirms everything that seems to confuse you,” he explains, “you can also see I have this in my arm.”

I didn't notice he had off the top of his suit until he called my attention. He was having the same mark I was having on my right arm.

“It's a tradition in our family to give a new child this mark, right after birth.”

“And this can't be a mere coincidence?” I asked but he shook his head.

“No, I've thought of that. That was why I asked the doctor for a DNA test. The result is what you are holding in your hand.”

My eyes skimmed through the piece of paper in my hands. There was mostly medical jargon that seemed to make no sense to me. But there were also a few words that I understood. Only that I'm still confused and everything still doesn't make sense to me.

“For all I know, this could have been made up,” I countered.

“And what do I stand to gain if I made that up? Don't you think about that?” He asked me then nodded at the doctor. I had suddenly forgotten he was still in the room with us. “Dr. Philips here can get another test done. But if you want a totally new hospital, then that can also be arranged.”

I looked into his eyes and all I saw was sincerity. Even when I tried to come up with thoughts to refute his claim, most of them looked unreasonable. A lot of questions were ringing in my head that I had no answers to. He had no reason to lie. What does he even stand to gain by lying that someone like me would be his daughter? That would totally make no sense, would it?

I sighed loudly as I found myself believing him. But a new anger had suddenly welled up in me. And with that, I looked up straight at him.

“So you abandoned me all these years, and now you suddenly feel it's time to come claim me, huh? Tell me, am I some kind of a property?”

He flinched as he looked everywhere but me. Dr. Philip wasn't in the room with us anymore. He must have stepped out while I was deep in thoughts.

“I didn't abandon you,” his voice was croaky as he faced me. Had he been crying? “Never will I abandon my own child.”

“I was away on a business trip when I got the news,” he paused, trying to stifle his emotion, then continued. “You were both involved in an accident when she was coming back home from a medical checkup. The car had almost burned beyond recognition. Only…”

“Wait! I don't get it, was I not in the car?”

“No, only your mother and the driver were in the car.” He said and handed me a picture. “Her name is Fiona and you are the exact replica of her.”

Looking at the picture in my hand confirmed what he just said. I was indeed a carbon copy of the woman in the picture. A tear dropped from my eye as I imagined what it would have been like to meet her.

“It was an attack.”

“What?” I asked, not understanding what he just said.

“The accident, it was a planned attack.” He said and I watched his fist tighten.

I could see the fury in his eyes as he fought the urge to keep the tears from falling. I could imagine the pain he went through reliving those memories. I shared the same pain with him, afterall, the woman in question was my mother.

We both fell into silence but the shrill sound of my phone brought me out of my thoughts. I looked at the phone to know who was calling and a sudden anger surged within me.

Why was this jerk calling me?

Sophia's POV "That's the problem," the doctor said, putting away her flashlight. "You've been pushing yourself too hard. Working long hours, not eating properly, not getting enough rest. Your body finally gave out."She pulled up a chair and sat down, her expression turning more serious. "You need to make some significant changes to your lifestyle. You need to reduce your stress levels. Start eating regular, healthy meals. Get at least eight hours of sleep every night. And most importantly, you need to stop overworking yourself."I nodded, but honestly, I wasn't sure how I was supposed to do all of that. The company needed me. There was so much work to do."I understand," I said. "I'll try to take it easier.""It's not about trying," the doctor said firmly. "It's about doing. Your health has to come first. Otherwise, you'll end up right back here in a hospital bed.""I'm fine, really," I insisted. "I just need to be more careful. But I can't just stop working. The company—""Sophia."

Sophia's POV I woke up slowly, my eyes opening to the familiar sight of the bedroom ceiling. The morning light was streaming through the curtains, soft and warm. I turned my head slightly and saw Donald sleeping beside me, his chest rising and falling peacefully. A smile tugged at my lips. Waking up next to him still felt new. Still felt special. Even though we'd been back together for a few months now, every morning felt like a gift. But then I noticed something else. Heat. My body felt hot. Too hot. Like I was burning from inside out. I shifted slightly, trying to get comfortable, but the movement made my head spin. A wave of dizziness washed over me, making me close my eyes for a second. What's wrong with me? I took a breath, trying to shake off the feeling. I have an important meeting this morning. Investors from overseas were coming to discuss a potential partnership with the company. I'd been preparing for weeks. I couldn't be sick. Not today. I pushed myself up to

Donald's POV My jaw clenched. "What job?"Laura's eyes fixed on Sophia, ignoring me completely. "You're lucky those cops showed up when they did. Another hour and you would have been nothing but a bad memory. And you know what? When I get out of here, and I will get out eventually, you better watch your back. Because I'll make sure you suffer, you dumb bitch.""You're not getting out," I said firmly. "You're going to rot in here for what you did."Laura's attention snapped back to me, her expression shifting to something almost amused. "Oh, Donald. Still playing the hero? How cute. Tell me, does it make you feel better? Does it help you sleep at night knowing you 'rescued' her?"I took a breath, trying to keep my anger in check. "Why, Laura? That's what I came here to ask. Why did you do all of this? The fraud, stealing my jewelry, kidnapping, destroying my company. Was it really just about money?"Laura leaned back in her chair, a smirk on her face. "You really want to know?""Yes."

Donald's POV The car moved smoothly through the city streets, heading toward a place I never thought I'd willingly visit. The prison. I glanced at Sophia in the passenger seat. She was looking out the window, watching the buildings pass by, but I could see the tension in her shoulders."Are you nervous?" I asked. She turned to look at me, a small smile on her lips. "A little. But I think I need to do this. We both do."I nodded. She was right. This wasn't just about confronting Laura. It was about closure. About facing the person who'd caused us so much pain and then walking away from it all. Moving forward."I still can't believe she did all of that," Sophia said quietly. "The fraud, the kidnapping, trying to destroy your company. All the while pretending to love you."My hands tightened on the steering wheel. "Yeah. I was a complete fool.""You weren't a fool," Sophia said gently. "You trusted someone you thought cared about you. That's not being a fool. That's being human."I look

Sophia's POV The shock on Donald's face was immediate. Like I'd slapped him. His eyes went wide and his mouth opened slightly, but no words came out. He just stood there, frozen, looking at me with this expression that made my chest hurt.I could see the hurt in his eyes. Real, genuine hurt. Not the fake kind that some people put on when they want sympathy. This was different. This was raw and honest and it cut right through all the walls I'd built up over the past month. The room had gone quiet. Everyone was watching us. Waiting to see what would happen next. The cheerful birthday atmosphere had disappeared, replaced by this heavy tension that made it hard to breathe.I looked at Donald, and something shifted inside me.For the past month, he'd been trying. God, he'd been trying so hard. I'd seen it even though I'd pretended not to. The text messages I'd ignored. The calls I'd sent to voicemail. The flowers that had been delivered to my office every single week. The handwritten note

Sophia's POVOne month later…The elevator doors opened and I stepped out into the parking garage, my heels clicking against the concrete floor. My feet ached. My shoulders felt heavy. My entire body was screaming for rest.Work has been brutal today. Back-to-back meetings, endless emails, decisions that needed to be made immediately. Ever since I'd taken over more responsibilities at the company, the workload had been intense. But I didn't mind. Actually, I preferred it this way. Being busy meant less time to think. Less time to remember things I wanted to forget.I unlocked my car and slid into the driver's seat, letting out a long breath. The silence felt good after the noise of the office. I started the engine and pulled out of the parking spot, heading home. The drive was quiet. I turned on the radio but barely heard the music. My mind was already thinking about what I'd do when I got home. Maybe take a long bath. Order some takeout, then watch something mindless on TV until I'd
