I bite softly on my lips as I paced the length of the living room. Glancing at the window, I saw snow outside. Sighing, I looked at the wall clock. It was past nine in the evening and Donald is yet to come home. The loud ringing of my phone interrupted into my train of thoughts. I picked up the phone, Mr. Jack's voice greeted me. "Hey Sophia, we can't make it today due to the weather." "Alright," I reply, trying to hide my disappointment. "You take care, okay? We'll surely be there tomorrow," he says, then added, "Evelyn sends her regards. Bye." Mr. Jack is Donald's dad, and Evelyn his younger sister. It's tradition to spend every Christmas with us. And I always looked forward to such moments. Donald's family were caring, especially his father. I felt a pang of loneliness knowing they won't be coming again today. I thought of calling my parents, but quickly remembered they don't count. They still hadn't forgiven me for marrying Donald. Their reason—he was from a higher social class, still seemed absurd to me. I took a sip of my hot coffee, gazing out the window. The snowflakes was falling gently onto the ground. Memories flooded my mind. My parents had never acknowledged my marriage to Donald. They'd cut off all ties with me, leaving me with no friends in Marquette. As I sat there, I wished I had someone to talk to. But Donald and I had no friends. Only his family. I sent another text to Donald. Then, I decided to watch the news to pass time. A car accident had occurred not far from Donald's company. I watched intently, worried. Just then, I heard a noise from downstairs. I got up to investigate, hoping it was Donald returning home early. I reached the bottom of the stairs, it was indeed Donald walking in. His face was stern as usual. "Welcome home, honey," I said, trying to sound cheerful. He grunted in response, heading straight for the dining table. I followed him. I watched him settle on a chair in the dining. And immediately he took the first bite of the turkey, I noticed the irritation in his eyes. "What's wrong?" I asked with a concerned look. "This rubbish you served as my food," he said, his voice was calm but his eyes were. I felt a knot in my stomach. "What do you mean?" I stuttered. He gestured to the plate. "This turkey is spoiled. Can't you taste it?" I took a tentative bite. Then, my face scrunched up at the foul taste. "I'm sorry, I didn't taste it before serving you. The maid cooked it before vacation, I just re-roast the turkey." Donald's expression darkened. "You never do, do you? You're always so careless." I felt a surge of defensiveness. "It's just because of the baby, I—" "Don't use the baby as an excuse.” The words escaped his lip in a growl. He stood up, gave me one last look, then left. I was now in the kitchen. I rushed to make another food for Donald. I didn't let his earlier attitude bother me. If anything — I was used to it. Still in a rush, I mistakenly flipped the pan on fire. “Ouch!” I cried out. The hotness of the oil burned my skin. Donald rushed into the kitchen. A look of concern etched on his handsome face. His upper body was bare. And his hair, tousled. He seemed to just have his bath. My eyes trailed his broad chest, then his packs. I swallowed hard. "Sophia, what happened?" I winced, trying to move away from the cooker. "I...I forgot to turn off the cooker." He quickly grabbed a towel and gently wrapped it around my leg. "Why are you so careless, Sophia?" I felt a surge of anger at his words. The pain from the burn made me bite back my words. "I'm sorry, okay? It was an accident." He helped me to the living room. His touch gentle despite his harsh words earlier. He tended gently to my burn. I couldn't help but wonder why he was being so kind now. Once he finished. He stood up. His expression cold once more. "I have work to do. Don't bother me." I watched as he walked away, feeling a mix of emotions. I sat there, trying to process what had just happened. I saw Donald smile, as he looked at his phone. My heart sank in my heart. He never smile when talking to me. He seemed lost in thought. His eyes intently fixed on the screen. I felt a pang of curiosity, wondering who could captivate his attention like that. I observed him briefly. I was trying to make sense of his mood swings. He suddenly looked up and caught me staring. His expression turned cold, and he turned back to his phone. I felt a shiver run down my spine as he stood up. He walked towards me. "Your meal is getting cold," I said, trying to break the tension. He didn't respond. Instead, he handed me a blank envelope. "What's this?" I asked. He didn't answer, his eyes was avoiding mine. I opened the envelope, and my heart sank. Inside, I saw divorce papers. "What's going on, Donald?" I asked, trying to keep my voice steady. He finally looked at me, his eyes devoid of emotion. "It's over, Sophia. I only married you to make my mother happy. Now that she's gone, I have no use for you." I felt like I'd been punched in the gut, my breath knocked out of me. "You can't do that Donald. What about us? What about our life together?" He scoffed. "There is no us, Sophia. There never was." I felt like I'd been living in a dream, and suddenly, I was awake. The reality was harsh and unforgiving. "Why did you stay with me for so long?" I asked, my voice cracking. Donald shrugged. "My mother's dying wish was for me to marry you. I honored that wish. But now that she's gone, I'm free to live my life as I want." “What's this supposed to mean?” I asked, my heart pounding in my chest. “Laura is back. So I can't be with you anymore.”Sophia's POV "That's the problem," the doctor said, putting away her flashlight. "You've been pushing yourself too hard. Working long hours, not eating properly, not getting enough rest. Your body finally gave out."She pulled up a chair and sat down, her expression turning more serious. "You need to make some significant changes to your lifestyle. You need to reduce your stress levels. Start eating regular, healthy meals. Get at least eight hours of sleep every night. And most importantly, you need to stop overworking yourself."I nodded, but honestly, I wasn't sure how I was supposed to do all of that. The company needed me. There was so much work to do."I understand," I said. "I'll try to take it easier.""It's not about trying," the doctor said firmly. "It's about doing. Your health has to come first. Otherwise, you'll end up right back here in a hospital bed.""I'm fine, really," I insisted. "I just need to be more careful. But I can't just stop working. The company—""Sophia."
Sophia's POV I woke up slowly, my eyes opening to the familiar sight of the bedroom ceiling. The morning light was streaming through the curtains, soft and warm. I turned my head slightly and saw Donald sleeping beside me, his chest rising and falling peacefully. A smile tugged at my lips. Waking up next to him still felt new. Still felt special. Even though we'd been back together for a few months now, every morning felt like a gift. But then I noticed something else. Heat. My body felt hot. Too hot. Like I was burning from inside out. I shifted slightly, trying to get comfortable, but the movement made my head spin. A wave of dizziness washed over me, making me close my eyes for a second. What's wrong with me? I took a breath, trying to shake off the feeling. I have an important meeting this morning. Investors from overseas were coming to discuss a potential partnership with the company. I'd been preparing for weeks. I couldn't be sick. Not today. I pushed myself up to
Donald's POV My jaw clenched. "What job?"Laura's eyes fixed on Sophia, ignoring me completely. "You're lucky those cops showed up when they did. Another hour and you would have been nothing but a bad memory. And you know what? When I get out of here, and I will get out eventually, you better watch your back. Because I'll make sure you suffer, you dumb bitch.""You're not getting out," I said firmly. "You're going to rot in here for what you did."Laura's attention snapped back to me, her expression shifting to something almost amused. "Oh, Donald. Still playing the hero? How cute. Tell me, does it make you feel better? Does it help you sleep at night knowing you 'rescued' her?"I took a breath, trying to keep my anger in check. "Why, Laura? That's what I came here to ask. Why did you do all of this? The fraud, stealing my jewelry, kidnapping, destroying my company. Was it really just about money?"Laura leaned back in her chair, a smirk on her face. "You really want to know?""Yes."
Donald's POV The car moved smoothly through the city streets, heading toward a place I never thought I'd willingly visit. The prison. I glanced at Sophia in the passenger seat. She was looking out the window, watching the buildings pass by, but I could see the tension in her shoulders."Are you nervous?" I asked. She turned to look at me, a small smile on her lips. "A little. But I think I need to do this. We both do."I nodded. She was right. This wasn't just about confronting Laura. It was about closure. About facing the person who'd caused us so much pain and then walking away from it all. Moving forward."I still can't believe she did all of that," Sophia said quietly. "The fraud, the kidnapping, trying to destroy your company. All the while pretending to love you."My hands tightened on the steering wheel. "Yeah. I was a complete fool.""You weren't a fool," Sophia said gently. "You trusted someone you thought cared about you. That's not being a fool. That's being human."I look
Sophia's POV The shock on Donald's face was immediate. Like I'd slapped him. His eyes went wide and his mouth opened slightly, but no words came out. He just stood there, frozen, looking at me with this expression that made my chest hurt.I could see the hurt in his eyes. Real, genuine hurt. Not the fake kind that some people put on when they want sympathy. This was different. This was raw and honest and it cut right through all the walls I'd built up over the past month. The room had gone quiet. Everyone was watching us. Waiting to see what would happen next. The cheerful birthday atmosphere had disappeared, replaced by this heavy tension that made it hard to breathe.I looked at Donald, and something shifted inside me.For the past month, he'd been trying. God, he'd been trying so hard. I'd seen it even though I'd pretended not to. The text messages I'd ignored. The calls I'd sent to voicemail. The flowers that had been delivered to my office every single week. The handwritten note
Sophia's POVOne month later…The elevator doors opened and I stepped out into the parking garage, my heels clicking against the concrete floor. My feet ached. My shoulders felt heavy. My entire body was screaming for rest.Work has been brutal today. Back-to-back meetings, endless emails, decisions that needed to be made immediately. Ever since I'd taken over more responsibilities at the company, the workload had been intense. But I didn't mind. Actually, I preferred it this way. Being busy meant less time to think. Less time to remember things I wanted to forget.I unlocked my car and slid into the driver's seat, letting out a long breath. The silence felt good after the noise of the office. I started the engine and pulled out of the parking spot, heading home. The drive was quiet. I turned on the radio but barely heard the music. My mind was already thinking about what I'd do when I got home. Maybe take a long bath. Order some takeout, then watch something mindless on TV until I'd
