Days crawled by as the investigation went on at a snail's pace. Anna spent her days anxiously waiting for the outcome. Although she was innocent, this matter was handled personally by her, and her oversight had caused her this problem. She had been too naïve. And now she had found out the hard way how naivety in business wasn’t a good choice.

Another thing that bugged her was the possibility of Melisa having set her up. Although she had a feeling Melisa was involved, feelings alone weren’t enough to prove anything. The police needed evidence—something she didn’t have.

Without evidence, there was no way of proving her involvement, and Melisa might walk scot-free. If there were nothing linking Melisa to the fraud, wouldn’t that mean she won the bet? She didn’t dare imagine what Melisa would ask if Anna lost the bet. At this point, Anna could only cross her fingers and pray.

And then there was the financial issue. With her a

Anna woke up to soft music playing in the background. Her skin felt fresh and not as sticky and sweaty as it was before she passed out. She still remembered the mysterious knock, the bloody photos, and nothing after that. How did she get into bed? Why did she have fresh clothes on? What happened? How long had she been out for?The bed dipped beside her, and she turned her face to check out the intruder, but her eyes widened instead. Liam sat beside her, his hand holding an old photo of an enchanting young woman squatting in a field of flowers, her arms wrapped around a little girl. The little girl leaned against the woman’s chest, her tiny hands reaching out to her face. Those two were so adorable.“Mom?” Anna blurted out before she could stop herself, her brows furrowing in confusion. “How?“You are awake,” Liam said, putting the photo aside and looking at her with unmistakable concern. “How are you feeling?”

Anna hesitantly sat down in the black swivel chair, her fingers clutching the armrest. Her back stiffened just by looking at Liam’s mood shift. Something was terribly wrong. And something to do with her. Was she in trouble? What did she do? Was there something he wasn’t telling her? what? Had she misunderstood him? What if there was more to the whole situation than him merely playing games with her?“I’m listening,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper, and her fingers still tightly wrapped around the armrest.“Yes, it is true that I had your money transferred to my account.” He clasped hands again, leaning his elbows on the table. “They did call me and I approved it because, apparently, all your accounts are frozen. That means you cannot send, receive, or withdraw money in any of your accounts for the next 180 days.” “My accounts are frozen?” shock spread on her face as the informati

Next chapterAnna arrived at the headquarters still fuming, and the early afternoon sun didn’t do much to help her situation. She tapped her card on the electronic card reader at the door, and with a beep, the card reader emitted a green light, prompting the security doors to slide open. She headed straight to the private elevator at the end of the lobby, pressing the top floor button.Once she stepped out of the elevator, she passed by the secretary’s desk in front of Liam’s office. “Excuse me, is my husband in his office?” she asked the young, relatively new secretary sitting behind the desk. At least that rude secretary wasn’t present today. Perhaps she was fired.“Yes, ma’am,” the girl responded, afraid to meet Anna’s eyes. From her lack of confidence, she was either a trainee or a naturally timid person. “Do you have an appointment?”“No.”

In the week that followed, Anna spent her time searching for the best divorce lawyer in the city. Her hopes of going the amicable way had been crushed time and time again when Liam refused to sign those papers willingly. It was partly her fault, too, for always giving in to his advances instead of standing by her decision. This method would cost her time and money, and, in addition, there was still a possibility of losing the lawsuit. Settling her divorce in court was a more complicated method she would have rather avoided if she had had a choice. In her search, she had quickly realized how much influence Liam had in this city. Every lawyer she had met so far had chickened out as soon as they heard they were going against the great Liam Parker. And the only lawyer who wasn’t afraid of him asked for an astronomical fee that was way beyond her budget.Anna sat in the coffee shop feeling defeated as she watched another lawyer walk out of their meeting after hearing

Next chapter“Jessica, this is so complicated,” Liam said, rubbing his tired eyes and shuffling his feet. Jessica’s mood was shifting too quickly, letting him know she was really pissed with him. he was treading a fine line and things would escalate further.“Then make it simpler,” Jessica snapped, her voice rising a note higher. “And I am not begging you. I am demanding answers.” She stood straighter, no longer leaning on the car, and took a step forward towards him. “You’d better give me a convincing reason, or your marriage is really over. I will make sure of it. And if you are in doubt, try me.”“Okay, okay, I’ll talk.” Liam held out his palms in front of him in surrender to stop Jessica from getting even angrier. He had a feeling she wasn’t kidding. She might change cities just to make sure Anna stayed away from him. He couldn’t let that happen because
