11. Bloody engagement

As Eleanor's hunger pangs intensified, she couldn't help but voice her complaint to her mother, Rose. The restrictions imposed by Knight traditions left her feeling frustrated and famished, her stomach growling in protest at the enforced fast.

"Mumma, I am very hungry," she lamented, her tone tinged with irritation. "I don’t understand why I cannot have lunch?"

Rose sighed in sympathy, her heart aching for her daughter's discomfort. "The Knights' traditions, Eleanor," she explained, her voice tinged with resignation. "The would-be bride has to fast on the day of her engagement and marriage. Caroline Knight had strictly called me to ensure this was followed. And you know I would have still let you eat something, but Laura’s eyes are always on us."

Eleanor nodded in understanding, though her frustration simmered beneath the surface. "I know," she sighed, her stomach rumbling in protest. "But I can eat fruits, can’t I?"
