LOGINMy groom was attacked a few hours before our wedding, and I was forced to marry his elder brother instead. They said that it was for everyone's good, but what about me? We took vows like robots reciting a statement: no emotion, no expression, just some unwilling words coming out of our mouths. Just like this, I was thrown in an abyss of marriage with no hope for the future. Above all, I became the stepmother of a three-year-old child who became excited when told that he now has a mother. I couldn't even muster the courage not to let that child enter my world. What do I do now? My marriage was a big deal for me. Even if it was an arranged business marriage, I tried to make it work with my first groom, but what about now? My husband - cold, indifferent, still grieving his first wife, and unapproachable to me in every way. What I wished for and what I got. What should I do now? What does destiny hold for me??

“Jack will not be able to take his hands off you tonight, Pearl. You look stunning.” My younger sister, Sapphire, gushed while looking at me through the mirror.
I blushed while looking at the bride in the mirror. The smile on my lips widened a little. The light green color of the gown had a hint of white with a floral pattern all over the skirt, light green small diamonds embedded in the floral belt around the waist, and a deep V-neck with a light green floral net as the sleeves gave me a conservative look with a hint of allure as the neck shape bordered by the floral embroidery and small diamonds enhanced the shape of my bre*st.
I have a model-like figure with heavy br*asts, and with a good height of 5'7", I was truly looking stunning.
With light makeup, paired with diamond jewellery, it really made me look different from my usual look. I looked beautiful, and somehow, I was now eager to see Jack’s reaction when he would lift my veil.
My heart was now racing a bit in anticipation.
This was an arranged cum business marriage between my family and Jack’s. Jack Froste is the younger son of the Froste family. I am Pearl Nickelson, the eldest daughter of my family. Our family arranged this marriage for mutual benefits, and as the eldest daughter, I agreed to this marriage.
Jack and I have met a few times in the past two months, trying to get to know each other well before the marriage. Jack always behaved naturally in front of me. It made this marriage less suffocating and more acceptable, as we can both be natural in front of each other.
This is the first thing that Jack asked me to do at our first meeting.
“They are almost here, Pearl. You need to put on your veil now,” Sapphire ushered while going for the veil on the vanity in front of us. I clasped my gloved hands as anxiety filled my heart.
“Calm down, Pearl. This is your big day. Even if this is not a marriage out of love, Jack is a good man, and the way he treats you, you are not at a loss.” I comforted myself while smiling. Sapphire picked up the veil, and at the same time, the door of my room opened, and all the remaining bridesmaids entered the room hurriedly.
“Pearl. You need to go out. Something happened. A woman is fighting with Jack on the first floor.” Rose, my friend, jogged towards me, speaking anxiously, fear evident in her voice.
My heart skipped a beat, and I just blinked while processing what she said.
“What?” Sapphire yelled in shock, and before I could even think about what to do next, I lifted my skirt and ran towards the door.
“Pearl, wait. Let me talk to Mom.” Sapphire yelled behind me, but my heart was now thudding hard against my ribcage.
A woman is fighting with Jack. Could she be his ex-girlfriend?
Jack told me about his past on our first date, and I appreciated his honesty.
But he told me that they broke up long ago. Then why is she here? The last thing that I want in my life or on this day is a drama between ex’s.
I increased my pace when I heard a woman screaming at the top of her lungs. “Pearl. Don’t run fast. You are wearing heels.” Sapphire yelled behind me, but my mind was completely on what was happening on the first floor.
Our parents booked the whole banquet hall. I was on the second floor with my family, relatives, and all the bridesmaids, while the groom’s family, with their relatives and friends, was on the first floor.
I stopped in my tracks on the last flight when I saw Jack shielded by his friends while two of his female relatives were holding a young woman away from Jack at a good distance in the corridor.
“What’s going on here?” I yelled at the top of my lungs, getting the attention of everyone.
Jack, who had a troubled expression on his face, snapped his head towards me, and his face went pale.
“I swear, Pearl, we broke up a year ago. I don’t know why she is here?” He yelled in panic, desperate to make me believe him.
I had a stern expression on my face as I walked towards them at a steady pace. Sapphire and my friends were walking with me.
“Jack is telling the truth, Pearl. A year ago, we found Sylvie cheating on Jack, and he immediately broke up with her that day. She ….. she is the one who kept on pestering him, but he never gave a s**t to her after that day.” His best friend, Peter, tried to convince me too.
I believed them because this is what I also found through my investigation into Jack and his past.
“I told you that I was drugged. I didn’t cheat on you. Why can’t you trust me?” Sylvie, his ex, screamed at the top of her lungs, writhing inside the grip of those two women.
“Where is the security? How did she enter the hall? How did she succeed at reaching here?” I roared while looking at the server who had a walkie-talkie in his hand. My heels were clicking hard against the tiles.
Even though I was fuming badly, I kept my posture straight and composed, just like I was taught as the heiress and the co-CEO of our company.
“Th… they are coming, Ms. Nickelson.” He replied to me while stuttering hard in fear.
I stopped abruptly when Sylvie suddenly pushed both women with all her strength. They also screamed while falling backward. Sapphire and Rose immediately came forward, shielding me behind them, but our eyes widened in horror when Sylvie suddenly took out a long and sharp dagger out of nowhere.
“Go to hell.” She roared; her face twisted in rage.
“Jack. Watch out.” I screamed at the top of my lungs in fear, lunging towards Jack when I realized what she was trying to do.
Everything after that moved in slow motion in front of my eyes. I watched Jack move his gaze towards Sylvie.
I watched Jack’s friends coming forward, pushing Jack away to save him from Sylvie.
I watched two of Jack’s friends lunging towards Sylvie, but she swayed the dagger swiftly in front of her, making them stop abruptly.
I watched Jack yelling at his friends in panic and lunging forward. Everything happened in just a few seconds, but I felt as if it were an eternity.
My heart was now drumming against my eardrums, and then everything stopped.
My heart stopped beating. Everyone stopped yelling and moving. Sylvie stopped moving the dagger, and Jack stopped moving too. His friends were still holding him by his shoulders.
Jack was now holding the dagger, which was thrust into his abdomen by Sylvie.
“Jack.” Almost everyone screamed at the top of their lungs with me, and I ran forward.
Jack was frozen in his place, and he yelped in pain when Sylvie pulled the dagger out of Jack’s abdomen mercilessly. His face turned red because of the pain.
The blood splattered on her, but she raised the dagger to strike Jack again. I ran towards him like a madwoman.
“Bring the car to the front.” I roared while running towards him, losing my composure completely. Tears were streaming down continuously, but I didn’t care about anything.
All I wanted right now was to hold Jack and pull him away from Sylvie at any cost.
Jack’s friends lunged at Sylvie, and one of them grabbed her wrist, twisted it mercilessly, and threw her on the floor.
“Jack,” I screamed again when his body swayed and started falling.
Pearl’s P.O.V. (Continued)Theo and his friends, associated with the Harriett family, had watched me grow up.So, comforting me in this state came naturally from Theo. That was also the reason that I didn’t mind him touching my shoulder. It was like a fatherly touch.I just sniffed while bobbing my head slightly.Sometimes, showing weakness is also a strategy.“Yes, Pearl. The circumstances in which you married Arthur, we understand.” Yohan said to me in a very serious tone.I only bobbed my head and sniffed slightly before looking up.They both gave me a sympathetic look before Theo released my shoulder.I slowly moved towards the car and started walking at a slow and steady pace.My shoulders were still tensed.I knew that they were still watching me.My phone started ringing in my palm.I looked at the screen and saw it was Arthur.I took the call but didn’t increase my pace.“How did it go?” He asked me calmly.“I gave him two hours almost fifteen minutes ago,” I told him in a low
Pearl’s P.O.V. (Continued)I didn’t know much about these kinds of medicinal and clinical stuff, but the grimness in Victor’s voice was enough to stop my heart beating for a few seconds.“Mrs. Froste,” Willow called me hurriedly and grabbed my arm when I staggered a little on my feet.“I am okay,” I mumbled, keeping myself steady on my feet.We entered the elevator when the door opened in front of us.“What did you get?” Noah asked after a short silence of a few seconds.Victor didn’t answer immediately, and at the distance between him and the camera, subtle movements in his body weren’t easy to capture. So, I just waited anxiously for his response.“It…. It won’t be easy to prepare the antidote in a short span of a few days or weeks.” The second those words left Victor’s mouth, I felt the cramped space of the elevator closing on me.My vision blurred instantly. Not easy to prepare the antidote….The phrase replayed like a broken record in my ears.Griffin had no antidote. My ears sta
Pearl’s P.O.V. (Continued)The room was quiet for a while. The low hum of the air conditioner was the only thing disturbing the suffocating silence.I let this silence press Oscar more.“Calm down, Pearl. We …. We understand your turmoil, but you can’t let your emotions cloud your judgment," Raphael Harrison, the planning director and also one of the shareholders of the institute, said to me in a low and cautious voice.“You guys can’t understand what I am going through, Mr. Harrison,” I spoke in a dangerously low voice, my gaze still locked on Oscar.“Calm down, Pearl,” Mr. Gilbert asked me this time, a hint of request evident in his voice.I scoffed and looked around at everyone. They had grim expressions on their faces, too.Their concern wasn't born out of compassion. It was born out of fear for their own interests. Not from the fact that the institute was used to run illegal research, and some innocent lives were sacrificed in the process.“The one who is battling against death i
Pearl’s P.O.V. (Continued)In front of them was standing the woman who shook the entire Nickelson family, but in my heart…I was the woman who was still shaking in fear.Evan’s blood wasn’t on my clothes anymore, but I could feel the stickiness of his blood on my body.I didn’t look anywhere. My eyes were still locked on Oscar. His expression was unreadable.I watched them turn their heads between Oscar and me.One by one.The only person who was least curious was Theo Gilbert.Yet he kept his expression calm.I blinked lazily, keeping my gaze locked with his, slowly drumming the fingertips, too soft to drown in the murmurs.Oscar remained seated, his fingers loosely interlocked on the polished table.Only the faint tightening of his jaw betrayed the irritation building beneath his composed exterior.A few people in the room opened their laptops and started looking for what I said, I guess.A few opened their phones, but the murmurs slowly went down.Oscar also didn’t show any intenti
Pearl’s P.O.V.I slowly opened my eyes when I felt something heavy pressing my body on the mattress, making me unable to breathe.Something hot fanning my nape at the same time.It took me a few seconds to realize that I had fallen asleep at some point, too, and now Arthur was lying over me while I
Arthur’s P.O.V.“She is still in Josh’s apartment?” I asked Paul while exiting the car.“Yes, Mr. Froste,” he replied to me in a low voice.I took a deep breath and went to the other elevator. Every penthouse had its designated elevator, and there were two common elevators for the lower floors.Luc
No one’s P.O.V.For a few seconds, none of them spoke again. Pearl was still in a state of surprise while Arthur continued looking at Pearl calmly. The silence was comfortable, and Pearl let the words sink into her heart completely. She blinked a few times and then let out a shaky breath.Even if t
Arthur’s P.O.V.“I married you, Arthur. And after yesterday’s farce, I have no desire to be a divorcee in the future. It’s not on me, but on you now.”Her words echoed in my brain until the door of her room closed with a soft click. The calmness in her voice stirred something inside my frozen heart
