Ravi knocked on the storage room door, not expecting it to be unlocked since he believed Daniel would have locked it if Raymond had been confined inside. There was no response from inside, just silence when he slowly cracked the door open, revealing the dim yellow light from an old bulb that provided enough illumination for him to spot Raymond's presence. Ravi took a few steps further inside, leaving the door open behind him.
In the corner of the empty room, Raymond was huddled, his arms wrapped around his knees, oblivious to Ravi's presence. He was now wearing one of Daniel's loose-fitting shirts.
Ravi felt sympathy for him; he couldn't deny that seeing Raymond without any clothes clinging to his body exposed many scars crisscrossing his half-thin form, and Ravi couldn't simply ignore it.
Not knowing Raymond's age, he might have had some 'issues,' and Ravi winced at his earlier unkind thoughts. For some reason, it hadn't crossed Ravi's mind to kick him out from the beginning when he first saw Raymond.
Ravi chose to sit next to Raymond without saying anything. When Raymond became aware of Ravi's presence, he raised his head and turned to look, quickly forming a smile on his lips.
"Ravi?" he called weakly, his voice sounding hoarse.
As Ravi gazed into Raymond's differently colored eyes, he fell silent instantly. Raymond's left eye was golden and glowed softly in the dimly lit room. It radiated a soft golden light on the surface of his cheek. Raymond's gaze was filled with questions, with his thick eyebrows hidden beneath his unruly bangs.
He was not a human, everything about Raymond was otherworldly, including his inhuman appearance. Ravi's cheeks felt flushed, and he had to avert his gaze from Raymond who was staring at him so intensely. He rubbed his nose and asked, "Why are you in my room?"
Out of the corner of his eye, Ravi noticed Raymond's long fingers drawing an imaginary shape on the dusty floor. "At that time, Ravi made a request, and I was so happy to finally meet Ravi after waiting and hoping for so long," he said, although as time passed, his voice didn't provide a clearer answer to Ravi's question. Raymond's fingers gently rubbed his wrist, which Ravi now noticed was a deep shade of red, as if it were from tight bindings.
"What happened to your hand?" Raymond looked embarrassed and did his best to shield it from Ravi's view. "In the place I was before. I was unwanted; they called me a failed Elf. A few months ago, I made a mistake that got me locked in an underground prison."
Ravi's throat went dry after hearing Raymond's answer, and shadows formed in his mind. "What? What was your mistake?"
"I refused a girl."
Ravi fell silent for a moment, not sure how to respond until he realized his earlier words. "You're an elf?"
Raymond nodded slightly, still looking at the floor as if it held his full attention. Ravi sighed; he had read briefly about elves in a fantasy fiction book before but had never known they existed with concrete evidence, like the man beside him. At first glance, Raymond appeared to be a regular human because he didn't have the pointed ears characteristic of elves, as far as Ravi knew. "So why do you call yourself a failed elf?"
"I don't know, Ravi, maybe because I'm not a pure elf. I'm half-human," he said, sounding desperate and burying his face in his hands.
"How old are you?" Ravi knew his question might sound impolite, but when someone was going to stay in his house, he had to know.
"Only fifty years, Ravi. I'm still very young."
Ravi choked on his saliva, tucking his long bangs behind his ear. "Fifty years is not young."
Raymond's head jerked toward Ravi. "Is that true, Ravi? They said I was still young, so they didn't talk in front of me."
Ravi returned his gaze to Raymond, trying to process his words. He realized that Raymond was not human, and his age might differ from that of a regular human. "Perhaps they discussed a secret they didn't want you to know."
Raymond fell silent, and his eyes blinked. Ravi saw a flicker of sadness and disappointment on Raymond's face.
What did that expression mean?
Ravi changed the subject and regretted his earlier words. "Raymond, can your wings make you fly?"
Raymond hadn't even answered yet when Ravi was hit by the strong, intense scent of chocolate, even stronger than before, and his throat became dry. It was as if the scent enveloped Ravi tightly, and he had to remind himself to breathe.
"Ravi said my name?" he asked enthusiastically, with a gleam in his eyes and his thick eyebrows raised. He seemed to be instantly happier as if someone had flipped a switch inside him.
Ravi was taken aback, looking at Raymond, who appeared to glow in a different sense next to him. He didn't realize that the joy Raymond felt when he was called by his name had created a new feeling within Ravi, like many butterflies flying out of his chest.
"Ravi?" Ravi woke up from his reverie, seeing Raymond tilting his head in confusion, one of his eyes shining brightly.
Ravi licked his dry lips and shifted his body away from Raymond. The intense scent of chocolate still filled Ravi's lungs. "Yes. So, can your wings make you fly?"
Raymond's smile faded, and he shook his head slowly. "No, they're just decoration. I'm the only one like this. If I were a full elf, I could use them to fly, but these wings aren't strong enough to lift my body."
Ravi took a deep breath as the scent gradually faded. He changed the subject upon realizing that Raymond didn't like it. "I was wondering if you came here to protect me?"
Raymond turned his body to face Ravi, his eyes locked onto Ravi's without blinking. "Yes, Ravi. That was my purpose even before you were born, although I arrived at an unexpected time. But I'm glad and very grateful when you requested at the last minute before I was executed," he explained, leaving Ravi speechless and tensed in his seat. Executed? Would he be executed because of a girl he mentioned earlier? And Ravi was harboring a death row convict in his house.
Raymond touched his chest, covered by a layer of a T-shirt, and continued, "This is the mark of ownership that has been there since I was born. Because I'm half-human, my owner can possess me and do anything they want with me, but I can't own them back."
The golden glint in Raymond's multicolored eyes faded slowly, leaving only the dark orbs visible to Ravi. He didn't understand the meaning of "ownership" and the mark; everything was new to him. However, he was sure that the owner Raymond referred to was himself.
Raymond remained a stranger, even though he hadn't been in his home for a full day. Ravi questioned himself whether Daniel's words were accurate. However, in the end, Ravi believed in his instincts.
"What if I don't want to own you and I reject you?" Ravi asked seriously.
Raymond stared at him in disbelief, shaking his head slightly, and his lips drooped. He averted his gaze from Ravi and spoke with a heavy tone, "I will die."
"I will die."The sentence felt like dozens of needles piercing right into Ravi's chest, making it hard for him to even look at Raymond for now. Ravi made a choked sound deep in his throat, never expecting those words to come from Raymond. But in less than a day of knowing Raymond, he felt the pain and heaviness in the way those words came out of this man's lips.Ravi remained silent, keeping his mouth tightly shut. He swallowed every word he wanted to say to Raymond. They stayed silent until the quiet was broken by Raymond's hoarse voice. "But Ravi, it's the best choice. I'm a bad elf, if you want to refuse, do it now, Ravi. I don't want to go back there.""Where do you live?" Ravi cautiously asked, not wanting to inadvertently trigger painful memories for Raymond.Raymond replied weakly, "My house is quite spacious, filled with many horses, but it can sometimes smell."Ravi's chest tightened, his eyes growing warm as he heard that, Raymond had touched a sensitive spot this time. What
"Father told the neighbors that Raymond is our cousin who has come to stay, so they don't need to ask any more questions when they see Raymond," Father said after taking a sip of water.Ravi glanced at Raymond, who was devouring his pasta in front of him as if he hadn't eaten in a long time. It was as if he didn't care that people were discussing him in the middle of the dining table.Ravi shifted his gaze to the plate of Scotch egg in front of him, with just one piece left and a smear of tomato sauce on top of it. He sliced it and took a bite, savoring the combination of minced meat and boiled egg in his mouth. Ravi wiped the sauce off his lips with a napkin. "Father, I will clean the empty room upstairs."Father nodded, but his mother responded after arranging the plates on the shelf. "Daniel can help Ravi, right?""Sure, Mother," Daniel replied, sitting next to Ravi, who had just finished his meal."No need, Daniel. This morning you said you wanted to check the restaurant this eveni
"Make a wish, Ravi," his father spoke as he offered a cake with birthday candles lit on it to Ravi."Dad, I don't believe in things like this," Ravi said, smiling as he looked at the cake in front of him. He shifted his gaze to his mother and Daniel, who were waiting for him to do as his father instructed."Come on, Ravi, just make a wish. God will grant it," Daniel said, walking over to stand beside Ravi and placing his arm around Ravi's shoulder."Go on, dear. Your father is struggling to hold the cake," his mother added, making his father and Daniel laugh heartily."Alright, Mom," Ravi closed his eyes. Even though Ravi didn't believe in such things, he reluctantly made a wish. The problem was, that Ravi had no specific wish in mind; he felt like everything was sufficient in his life. So, he made a wish that seemed impossible, or if it did come true, he would be very happy with it.I wish on my birthday, a beautiful girl will descend from the sky like a winged angel, love me, and acc
"Raymond, you can't just show your wings like that. People will see," Ravi panicked as he hurriedly pulled Raymond inside the house after finding Raymond with torn clothes when his wings forcibly burst out in the middle of their front yard. Ravi sighed heavily; he didn't see anyone around for a moment and felt a bit relieved.Raymond's large wings were folded behind him. Ravi gazed at Raymond with understanding and asked, "Why did you go outside and reveal your wings? We've talked about this, haven't we?"Raymond's eyes shifted away from Ravi's gaze. "Someone was constantly looking through Ravi's window, so I came to see.""And you revealed your wings? Listen, Raymond, you mustn't display them in public. People will be scared, and it will lead to many problems," Ravi explained patiently, hoping to make Raymond understand.Upon hearing Ravi's words, Raymond immediately stood rigid, his head automatically tilting down, showing clear signs of remorse. But Raymond remained silent, closing
Ravi's feelings turned uneasy and restless, so he hurriedly rushed down the stairs to the front yard of his house. He immediately spotted the unfamiliar man holding a bloodstained sword.Ravi's legs went weak as his eyes caught a sight he never wanted to see. Lying in the green grass was Daniel with a gaping wound in his abdomen, which Ravi strongly believed had been caused by the stranger's sword. His plain white shirt was smeared with a gruesome bloodstain, marring the grass like spilled red paint.Tears that Ravi didn't realize had been flowing poured freely as he reached Daniel. He knelt down, grasping Daniel's now-cooling hand. Daniel, who was still semi-conscious, weakly blinked at Ravi, his hand returning to Ravi's gentle grasp."Raymond? Someone, call for Raymond. Call anyone. Please help Daniel," Ravi cried hysterically, looking around frantically for anyone who could assist, but no one was in sight. Their parents not being home only escalated Ravi's panic, with his heart raci
Ravi breathed as quietly as possible in the late night, leaning against the wall to listen for any movement in the next room. However, there was nothing but silence, only the sound of the springtime wind rustling outside, causing leaves to dance to its tune. What was wrong with Daniel? He had secluded himself for the past two days, and Ravi was sure of it, despite his mother's claim that Daniel was out of town and had no return date.Even if Daniel were indeed away, his older brother would have surely bid him farewell. Ravi occasionally heard noises from the far end of Daniel's room, things falling, perhaps the sound of shattering glass. But as quickly as the noise arose, it would vanish, sinking back into the silence as if it had never happened. His parents and even Raymond seemed to be hiding this from Ravi. Sometimes they pretended not to hear when Ravi brought up the topic of Daniel during their conversations."What's going on?" Ravi asked himself. He drew his knees closer to his c
As Ravi walked to get some fresh air, he felt the breeze blowing on his neck, wrapping around him uncomfortably. He paused for a moment and turned around, but found no one there. Ravi waited, expecting that someone would appear. But nothing happened. The gentle wind caressed his face, anda he took a deep breath, recognizing the familiar scent. Ravi's lips formed a thin line, disappointed with Raymond for not following his instructions."Come out, Raymond!" Ravi ordered, his voice filled with disappointment.Ravi sighed, his hands in the pockets of his sports pants, as he watched Raymond emerge sheepishly from his hiding spot behind a tree. Raymond even followed him without wearing any shoes."I told you to stay at home," Ravi said. He still felt guilty about his rough behavior from the previous night, even though he hadn't intended to act that way. Ravi didn't know what was wrong with him at that moment; it was like he had lost control of himself. But it had all happened.Raymond stood
"Is he the one you're going to kill next?"The sentence struck Ravi with a sudden jolt of surprise. It was clear that this man was engaging in a nonsensical conversation, but Ravi trusted Raymond enough to believe he wouldn't do such a thing, right? Ravi himself wasn't entirely sure. But who was this man that made Ravi doubt Raymond?"Who is he?" Ravi interrupted as Raymond sat in his open room, perched on a small red sofa in the corner. Raymond seemed startled from his reverie when Ravi asked that question. He glanced at Ravi, his expression indecipherable. Was he afraid, worried, or something else? Ravi couldn't tell.Raymond remained silent, his mouth tightly shut. Was this also part of his promise not to tell Ravi anything?"Okay, it's your right not to speak." In the end, Ravi said it, though his heart desired otherwise, wanting to force Raymond to reveal everything he didn't know. But what if this man was right?Ravi rubbed his nose bridge when he thought too much, and his throbb
