Chapter 1

I was dragged forward by iron chains.

"Quit dragging your feet, you little brat," one of the demon guards rumbled in a deep voice.

I quickly picked up the pace, walking toward the center of Hell's trial platform under the hostile stares of the crowd.

Standing on the other side were my family.

In that moment, it suddenly hit me that I was the middle child, the one always dragged out and placed in front of my sister and brother, Grace and Tommy Lawson, as a living warning of what happened to disobedient kids.

I was the example made to warn everyone else.

The Grim Reaper saw me arrive and immediately spoke in a booming voice. "Silence, everyone! The trial is about to begin."

He continued, "You're accusing your daughter, Joy Lawson, of slander, theft of emergency money, and conspiring with traffickers to sell her own siblings. If the charges are proven, she'll be executed on the spot, her soul destroyed, never to reincarnate! If the charges fail, you will bear the consequences. Do you wish to proceed?"

"Mom, Dad!" I was pressed down on the trial platform, tears streaming down my face in fear.

Dad turned his face away.

Mom looked at me, her eyes frighteningly bright. "Yes, of course! Grim Reaper, please don't go soft on her! She has been trouble since she was little! We've been worried sick about how to discipline her! This is perfect. We'll let Grace and Tommy see for themselves what happens to bad kids who misbehave! They go to Hell!"

Dad nodded repeatedly. "That's right! Grim Reaper, judge her however you see fit! Don't hold back just because we're family! This is for her own good, and even more so for Grace and Tommy's sake!"

My crying caught in my throat, turning into desperate gasps.

The demon guards lifted me up again.

"Dad, Mom! Joy's face is so pale, she looks like a-" Tommy suddenly spoke up quietly.

Dad cut him off. "Shut up! Watch closely! This is your lesson! If either of you two misbehaves in the future, after you die, you'll end up just like Joy, judged by the Grim Reaper, dragged away by demons, and suffer horribly!"

Mom pushed Grace and Tommy forward, making sure they had a clear view. "Look! Open your eyes wide and see clearly! This is karma!"

Grace and Tommy cried and begged for forgiveness.

Mom's face grew even more triumphant. "Now you're scared? Too late! You have to watch. If you don't, how'll you ever learn? This lesson from the Grim Reaper today is worth more than 1000 lectures from your dad and me! Look! Watch Joy carefully!"

She turned her head toward the Grim Reaper: "Grim Reaper, please, continue the trial. Make sure these two get a good, thorough look!"

I stood in the middle, small and wearing the same tank top from three days ago, just standing there in a daze.

David grew thinner and thinner, and gray crept into his hair far too early.Once, in the prison library, he saw a children's picture book with an illustration of a father holding his daughter's hand. He stared at that image and suddenly hunched over, breaking down in sobs.He wrote confession letters that could never be sent, filling notebook after notebook. The sentence was long, but it had an end.Over a decade later, due to acceptable behavior in prison, both were granted early release for good conduct. The outside world changed drastically, and they felt like they were gone a lifetime.Grace already graduated from college with a stable job and her own life, while Tommy was about to come of age.Janice protected them well and respected the children's choices. After his release, David did not seek out any relatives. He sold off what little remained of his meager assets, dividing the proceeds into two parts: one anonymously donated to a child protection organization, the other

Just as they were about to be pushed into the abyss, I looked up at the Grim Reaper.I said, "Grim Reaper, can you let them go this once?"The Grim Reaper looked down at me. "Foolish child, they treated you this way, and you still plead for them?"I lowered my head, my toes gently scuffing the ground. "S-Sometimes, they were good to me too. I remember when I was really little, I had a fever. Mom held me all night long and sang me lullabies. Her arms were so warm, and the song was so beautiful, even though later, she hardly ever held me anymore."One time, Dad came home from work with a wrinkled piece of candy in his pocket. He secretly gave it to me, but didn't give any to Grace or Tommy. Even though the candy melted a bit and stuck to the wrapper, it was the sweetest candy I've ever tasted."And when I scraped my knee really badly and cried so hard, Dad scolded me for being clumsy, but he still clumsily put medicine on it for me, blowing on it and comforting me."I spoke about t

Mom lunged at Dad, clawing at him. "I was angry because of her! It was all for Tommy and Grace's sake! And you? Who are you pretending to be! You hid behind everything and came up with those twisted ideas, treating your own daughter like an animal just to teach the others a lesson! You're the executioner! You're the one with a rotten heart!"The two completely turned on each other. They argued and shoved each other fiercely in front of the police, each blaming the other for being the real culprit behind their daughter's tragic death. At the peak of their fight, Dad's hand froze mid-swing.Mom's grip, tearing at his collar, also stopped abruptly.Almost simultaneously, they both remembered the dream: the Grim Reaper, the demon guards, and that small figure on the platform.Cold sweat instantly soaked through their backs. The fear of being found guilty in the dream instantly drowned out all their current anger and mutual accusations. They started to wonder if it was not just a dre

The officer recorded everything with a blank expression. He said, "We'll investigate the specific details thoroughly. Right now, we need to question you and your two other children separately."With that, Grace and Tommy were taken to different rooms. In Tommy's room, faced with the officer's gentle but unavoidable questions, five-year-old Tommy sobbed as he spoke in broken pieces."I really pity Joy. I stole money once to buy cards, and I got caught. Mom didn't hit me. Instead, she called Joy over and made Joy steal Mrs. Grant's purse from next door. Mom said she wanted to show me what happens to thieves; that they get arrested by the police.""Joy refused, so Mom pinched her and threatened her. Later, Joy ran away and really got caught by the police, and Mom made me watch. I was so scared."Tommy looked up with tear-filled eyes."Officer, was Joy used as an example again? Mom always says you have to make an example out of someone. Joy was always that example. Whenever Grace and I

Mom snatched the phone, her voice still edged with irritation from the nightmare. "You've got the wrong person! My kids are all right here sleeping just fine!"She held the half-awake Tommy in one arm and patted the groggy Grace with the other, her tone firm and absolute. The officer said, "Ma'am, do you also have a seven-year-old daughter named Joy Lawson?"Mom froze for a second, then answered quickly. "Oh, Joy! We're on a trip, and she's staying home by herself. A neighbor is checking in on her. What could possibly happen? You must have made a mistake!"The officer's voice was clear as he said, "We received a call from your neighbor. In your kitchen freezer, we found the body of a seven-year-old girl. Based on the neighbor's preliminary identification, it's your youngest daughter, Joy. We need you and Mr. Lawson to return immediately and cooperate with the investigation.""The freezer? Impossible! That's absolutely impossible!" Mom shrieked in denial. However, before she finis

What was supposed to be just a staged dragging turned into forceful gagging and restraining. My mouth and nose were covered tightly as I was dragged not toward the agreed-upon spot, but toward a beat-up van.Mom and Dad froze, but they still said to Grace and Tommy, "See? She didn't listen, and now she's really getting kidnapped by traffickers!"They just stood there and watched as I was shoved into the van.The footage fast-forwarded.I was taken to a filthy hideout where my hair was chopped into a mess, and I was changed into dirty, tattered clothes that were not mine, with grime smeared on my face. My hands and feet were tied, and I was crammed together with several other terrified children.A few days later, at the train station. A woman was leading me by the hand, preparing to board a train heading deep into the mountains. When the woman was not paying attention, I suddenly headbutted her and broke free, rushing toward the nearby police station.Using every ounce of strength
