Penulis: Against the Flow

Chapter 1

Penulis: Against the Flow
"Follow this data configuration exactly. I guarantee there won't be any problems."

I zoned out for a second before hearing that familiar voice. Looking up, I saw Owen Rountree urging the students to carry out the experiment.

A jolt of clarity hit me. I hurried forward and snatched the test tube from Logan McMahon's hand.

"The data is wrong!"

Seeing my anxious and stern expression, displeasure flashed through Owen's eyes.

"Professor Callahan, these numbers were painstakingly calculated by my students and me. I've run the experiment many times. There's no way they can be wrong."

He then turned to Logan and said, "Logan, do it according to the figures I gave you."

I pulled the test tube back, my body tense, sweat from my hand running along the glass and dripping to the floor.

"If you mix the liquids according to your data, it will explode instantly. Every single person here will be blown to pieces!" I roared, startling both the students and Owen.

No one dared to take the test tube from my hand again.

"Mr. Rountree, the professor wouldn't say that without reason. Should we double-check the data?" one of the students suggested.

The others quickly nodded in agreement.

Owen's face darkened. "Robert, you're doing this on purpose!"

"Do I really need to spell out how you got your data?" I asked, staring at him coldly.

I poured the liquid from the test tube into the waste sink. Only after watching the dangerous liquid got destroyed did I finally let out a breath of relief.

"A single misstep in a chemistry experiment can cause an explosion. Your data shows an excessive amount of potassium permanganate, and there's still a strong oxidizer left in the remaining solution," I said in a low, grave voice.

How could someone like him even be allowed to teach chemistry and lead students in experiments?

In my previous life, I hadn't carefully checked these numbers, and the lab had exploded because of it.

Fortunately, I made it back in time. Otherwise, these eight students—wait! One, two, three, four… seven!

"Where's the other student?"

Suddenly, a student turned pale and cried out, "Oh no! Devin took a test tube and went to the second-floor lab!"

I whipped my head toward the student who spoke.

Logan's voice trembled. "He didn't like how crowded this lab was, so he went to the second floor alone."

I bolted out of the lab, with the other students rushing behind me.

Just as I reached the second floor, an explosion rocked the entire building with a massive boom.

The floor in the hallway was instantly covered with shards, blood, and severed limbs.

I felt something splatter onto my face. I touched it—blood and bits of flesh. I could also feel the searing burn on my skin.

The video immediately went viral, shooting straight to the top of the trending lists. As this incident had blown up, and it concerned the reputation of Orion University and the entire academic community, netizens followed every development closely. Within just minutes of the video being posted, the number of comments and reposts skyrocketed.Meanwhile, Owen was still livestreaming. He'd even gotten quite familiar with using hard-sell tactics to coerce the viewers.Suddenly, tens of thousands of people flooded into the stream, all of them cursing him in the comments.Seeing this, Owen realized something was wrong. He immediately checked his phone.Instantly, his face turned ashen, and his knuckles went white from gripping his phone. He couldn't continue streaming any longer. In front of several hundred thousand viewers, he sheepishly ended the broadcast."What do we do? Damn it! Who knew there'd be an influencer around?"Bertha was panicking as well. Her voice had been crystal

My heart clenched in panic."Okay. I'll do it."Owen immediately took out his phone and pointed the camera at me, while Bertha handed me a sheet of paper they'd prepared in advance and told me to read it aloud. As expected, once the video hit the internet, I was viciously torn apart.Gregory called me immediately, asking what on earth was going on. The university was already working on gathering evidence, so why would I release a video like this at such a critical moment? At that moment, I was taking Leah to the hospital, feeling helpless."They threatened me with my daughter," I explained. She was still unconscious. I didn't know how much sedative they'd forced her to inhale.Gregory remained silent for a long time. After offering a few words of comfort, he hung up.If seeking revenge meant putting Leah's life at risk, I didn't know whether I should continue pursuing it.While I was in the hospital, the patient in the next bed recognized me. I didn't notice him taking photos

Unexpectedly, after Logan posted his video, Owen uploaded one of his own, though it was much shorter."I'm just an advisor, while Robert Callahan is the professor. Who has more influence over whether someone gets into a PhD program? I'm sure everyone already knows the answer."Netizens couldn't help but feel like they were being toyed with."I'm just going to sit back and enjoy the tea. Is this what academia is like? What a mess. Even a top university like Orion can't focus on proper research anymore. Now it's all about profits.""@OrionU Please investigate this thoroughly. This isn't a small issue. Was it the professor or the advisor?"People began tagging the university's official account nonstop, and some even managed to find Gregory's number and started calling him directly.Soon after, I received a call from him."Robert, tell me the truth. What really happened?"I told him everything, including how Owen's own calculations contained errors, and how those errors would've ca

My face darkened with rage as I watched Leah being surrounded and bombarded with aggressive questions, and I pushed the reporters aside."Leave my apartment right now, or I'm calling the police!"Even after I said that, they continued to press. Finally, several security guards arrived and drove them away."Stop disturbing the residents!"After the reporters were chased off, I was about to close the door when Bertha and Owen appeared.Bertha tilted her chin slightly. "You should know what's good for you. Because of you, Owen's lost his chance to be selected as an outstanding lecturer, and the university fired him, too."Only then did I learn that the university, aware of my capabilities, naturally believed me. They also investigated my claim that Owen had falsified data, which led to his termination. No wonder these two had gone live to ruin my reputation."Mommy, you helped bad people hurt Daddy! You're a bad person, too!" Leah yelled, pointing at Bertha, her face full of fury.

Just as the scene descended into tense chaos, the police finally arrived."Everyone, step back. Secure the area."Everyone present was then taken back to the station, including the other five students. The explosion had terrified them into silence. No matter how the police questioned them about what exactly happened in the lab, none of them were willing to answer. What I hadn't expected was that while I was at the station giving my statement, the outrage online had only grown worse."I knew it. No way someone that young could become a professor without connections.""Here's my theory. The people backing Robert wanted him in the spotlight, so they piled all the credit and awards on him. He got cocky, believed he was a genius, and then screwed up the data.""Officers, why do we have to be here too?" Bertha complained loudly. "The surveillance footage already proves that it was Robert's fault!"She stood right next to Owen, glaring at me. To an outsider, it would've appeared as i

The security guard's sharp gaze immediately fell on me.I spoke calmly, my eyes steady and resolute."The specific details can wait for the police investigation."While we waited, a swarm of reporters rushed in. Someone had posted about the explosion online, drawing the fastest reporters to the scene. The moment they saw us standing there, they immediately began snapping photos of us and the scattered body parts on the ground. If the guards hadn't held them back, they might have rushed closer for shots and even gone into the lab itself."Robert, your data was wrong. I tried to stop you, but you wouldn't listen, insisting on doing it your own way. And now someone's dead!" Owen shouted when he saw the reporters."Exactly!" Bertha quickly jumped in. "Are you trying to pin this on Owen just because you're a professor and he's only a lecturer?"Sure enough, the reporters immediately shoved their microphones in my face as soon as they heard this."You're that Robert Callahan, the you

I suddenly calmed down, staring at the woman in front of me who treated human life like trash. How blind had I been to ever fall for someone like her?In my previous life, I'd even foolishly agreed to share the blame with Owen, even though I wasn't responsible in the slightest. I wiped the blood

Behind me, the students' shrill screams pierced the air, mixed with repeated sounds of retching.Everyone was slumped across the floor, staring at me in shock. The second-floor lab had exploded.Owen's face was deathly pale, panic flickering in his eyes.Heavy footsteps suddenly sounded from the
