Chapter 1

Even then, I could not shake the feeling that I was dreaming.

She had left the whole thing blank? She had never broken up with Jett Sullivan, and she was planning to spend four years having fun with him?

Hailey Donahue watched me coldly, one corner of her mouth curling into a smile. "Ever since I was a kid, you've controlled everything I do. No dating, no fun. You made me grind through practice tests and memorize textbooks. You treated me like your puppet.

"Leaving the test blank is how I wreck the path you paved for me. I want you to know that your need to control me means absolutely nothing to me!"

It felt like someone had slapped me hard across the face. My ears rang, and I could not stop shaking.

Control? She actually thought I had been controlling her?

Seven years ago, our parents died in a car accident. Hailey was only ten that year, and I was 17. To ensure that she could stay in school, I dropped out and started working. I wore clothes that went for a few bucks so I could buy her the best study guides.

I could not bring myself to order takeout, yet I gritted my teeth and signed her up for the most expensive tutoring programs. For years, I scrimped and saved. Every dollar, every hour, and every ounce of effort I had went into her future.

Yet now she stood in front of me and casually told me that all of it was control?

"Hailey." My voice shook so badly it barely sounded like mine.

"That's the college entrance exam! Your whole future!"

She looked at me as if I had said something ridiculous, impatience written all over her face.

"My future? My future is being with Jett! And stop lecturing me already. I've heard it a million times. I'll say this one more time. Before seven tonight, transfer every cent you've made over the years into Jett's account. Otherwise, as far as I'm concerned, I don't have a brother."

I stood frozen, staring at her. This was the sister I had carefully protected since she was ten. This was the person I once believed would stand by me even if the rest of the world turned its back on me. Now she looked at me as coldly as she would look at an enemy.

Right then, a sickly-sweet voice called out from nearby. "Hails!"

Hailey's eyes lit up at once. "Jett!"

She ran straight over and threw her arms around him, and the two of them started kissing as if no one else were there.

I looked at the boy. He had dark hair, wore a school hoodie, and had a bright, sunny smile.

He looked completely harmless. However, he was the one who had texted Hailey in the middle of the night, coaching her to run away from home. He was also the one who had taught her to lie to me and turn against her own family.

I did not know how I got over there. By the time I realized what I was doing, my hand was already raised.

My fist slammed hard into Jett's face.

He sucked in a sharp breath and stumbled back several steps, clutching his face as he looked pitifully at Hailey. "Hails... Your brother, he..."

Hailey's expression changed instantly, and she shoved me with all her strength. "What are you doing?!"

I staggered back and landed hard on the ground, scraping a large patch of skin off my palms until beads of blood seeped through.

She carefully shielded Jett behind her. When she turned back to me, she looked ready to tear me apart.

"Listen to me, Jake Donahue. Jett is the one person in this world I want to protect more than anything. If you lay a finger on him again, I'll fight you with everything I have!"

I switched the phone to my other hand and set the bags down on the ground."Where are you right now?" My voice was calm, so calm that even I was a little surprised."I'm... I'm at the train station." Hailey's voice grew quieter. "Jake, I'm out of money. Jett broke up with me and took everything I had. I have nowhere to stay and nothing to eat. Jake, could you... Could you send me some money?"I fell silent.I was standing at the entrance to my apartment complex. The streetlight overhead stretched my shadow long across the ground.I thought back to two months ago, when Hailey had stood in front of me and said that if I did not give her the money, she no longer had a brother. Now that same sister was calling me, asking if I could send her some money.Suddenly, I felt exhausted. It was not just physical exhaustion. I was tired down to my soul."Hailey." My voice was soft, but I was not yielding. "You're not a kid anymore. You need to take responsibility for what you've done."The

It had been taken on Christmas morning that year. The whole family had dressed up in new clothes and gone to a photo studio together. It was the last photo of the four of us together. Less than three months later, Mom and Dad were gone.As I looked at the picture, my eyes slowly grew red. I pressed my phone face down against my chest and closed my eyes.Silently, I apologized to Mom and Dad. I had not raised her right, and I had not been able to hold our family together. Still, I would live a good life, and I would live it for both of them. The days went by, and my life in the new city slowly settled into a routine. I went to work, came home, ate, and slept. On weekends, I sometimes went shopping with Dani or took walks in the park by myself.I started learning to cook the food I actually liked, loading it up with hot sauce, garlic, and all the seasonings I had never dared to use before.I started buying clothes I actually liked. I no longer had to pinch pennies or count every dol

"If you don't give me the money, as far as I'm concerned, I don't have a brother."Now, every word she had said to me came back at her like a boomerang and struck her right in the chest. When Jett saw that she was only crying and not saying anything, he rolled his eyes, turned, and left. The door slammed shut behind him.Hailey sat alone in the damp, moldy little motel room and cried for a long time.…At that same moment, I was about 750 miles away in a city down south, unpacking in my newly rented apartment when my phone buzzed. It was a message from Dale.[Jake, I've got the apartment back. Your sister and her boyfriend have moved out. She didn't look too good, though. Maybe you should give her a call?]I read the message, and my thumb hovered over the screen for a long time. In the end, I did not reply. I set my phone down and went back to unpacking. It was a small one-bedroom, but it was clean and tidy. A pothos plant sat on the windowsill, left behind by the landlord, its

Jett kept his head down and said nothing."You never planned on spending the rest of your life with me either, did you?"The room suddenly went very quiet. Outside the motel, a car drove past, and its horn blared sharply.Jett gripped the blanket so tightly that his knuckles turned white. After a long while, he finally looked up. There were no tears in his eyes, only a coldness Hailey had never seen before."Hailey, let's break up."He said it calmly, so calmly that it sounded rehearsed.Hailey froze. She opened her mouth, but her throat seemed to close up, and not a single sound came out.Jett got up and started packing his things, moving quickly as if he were in a hurry."W-What did you just say?" When she finally found her voice again, it came out painfully hoarse."I said we're done." He did not even look up."Don't blame me. I don't have a choice. You got a 400 on the college entrance exam. No college is going to take you. What are you going to do with your life? Do cons

Hailey had always assumed I would be there no matter what. She could yell at me and push me away, and no matter how cruel her words or actions were, I would always forgive her. Now, I was gone. It was not a tantrum, and it was not a threat. I was truly gone. The motel bed was hard, the pillow was flat, and the TV blaring from the room next door made it impossible to sleep. Hailey tossed and turned, and all she could think about was my face.My eyes used to crinkle at the corners whenever I smiled. Over the years, though, I had seemed to smile less and less. When was the last time she had seen me smile? She could not remember. She could not even remember how long it had been since I bought myself new clothes.Every time she told me to get something new, I would say, "This one's fine. I can still wear it." She knew perfectly well that the clothes in my closet were the ones our parents had bought before they died. When our parents passed away seven years ago, I shouldered everythi

  • Blank Out of Spite   Chapter 6

Hailey was the one who had refused to believe me. She was the one who only listened to Jett. She was the one who had pushed me down the stairs with her own hands and then walked away without looking back.Jett stared at his belongings strewn all over the hallway, looking close to tears. "Hails, do something! My game controllers! It took me forever to save up for that whole setup!"Hailey stood rooted to the spot as if every ounce of strength had been drained out of her. She could not say a single word.Jett lost his patience and jabbed her arm. "What, did you forget how to talk? Didn't you say this was your place? How did it suddenly become someone else's? Your brother's unbelievable too. If he was renting, fine, but why hide it from you? Look at this mess he made. Now we don't even have a place to live!"The more he talked, the angrier he got and the more convinced he became that he was right. Finally, he shot to his feet. "I never should have gotten with you! Your family doesn't
