Chapter 2

Author: Thai Ginger
"One more thing. You'd better give Jett the money you owe him, or I swear I'll make you regret it!"

With that, she took Jett's hand and walked off without looking back.

I sat slumped on the ground, watching the two of them walk away. The students and parents leaving the testing center shot me strange looks, and their whispers stung my ears. The sun was blinding, yet I felt cold all over.

This was the sister I had given everything to raise. This was the sister I would have given up anything for.

I sat there, laughing and crying at the same time. My tears mixed with the blood on my palms. I could not tell which hurt more.

…

I made my way home in a daze. The whole way, Hailey's words kept replaying in my head.

She had turned in a blank test. She was going to spend four years having fun with Jett. If I did not give him the money, she would make me regret it. Every word cut into my heart like a knife, over and over again.

Only when I reached my front door did I understand what she meant.

My clothes, shoes, and toiletries had been dumped all over the hallway. Even the family photo I had always treasured lay smashed on the floor, the glass shattered into pieces.

It was the last picture of the four of us together. For all these years, whenever I felt like I could not go on, it was the one thing I could take out and look at to keep myself going. Now someone had smashed it and carelessly tossed it into the hallway.

The sight made me so furious that my blood seemed to freeze in my veins.

I raised my fist and pounded on the door.

Moments later, it swung open. "Who is it?"

It was Jett. When he saw me, there was not a trace of guilt in his eyes, only contempt. "Oh? What are you doing back?"

I glared at him, trying hard to keep my emotions in check, but my hands would not stop shaking. "This is my home. Do I need your permission to come back? What gives you the right to throw my stuff out?"

Jett leaned against the doorframe, running a hand through his hair, and answered breezily. "Oh, I told Hails to toss it. It's not really right for an outsider like you to be living here, is it?"

An outsider? He was calling me an outsider?

This was my home. This was the home our parents had left behind. This was the home Hailey and I had shared for all these years.

Yet a boyfriend she had only known for a short while was standing in my doorway, calling me an outsider?

Shaking all over, I tried to push my way inside, but Jett shoved me straight back out. Caught off guard, I stumbled and slammed into the hallway wall. The back of my head hit it with a dull thud, and my vision went black for a second.

"You..."

Before I could say anything more, a familiar voice came from inside. "Knock it off, Jake."

Hailey stepped out and leaned into Jett's arms, looking down her nose at me as if I were some outsider who had shown up to cause a scene. "This is my home. Someday, it'll be mine and Jett's. Of course, he can do whatever he wants."

I froze. It felt as if something had slammed into my chest, and the pain nearly knocked me off my feet.

She kept going, "Besides, whatever Mom and Dad left behind should go to me anyway. I'm a girl, so I should get all the good stuff. Letting you live here for free all these years was already more than generous of me."

She said it with complete conviction, as if I had truly been taking advantage of her all along.

I opened my mouth, but my throat closed up, and not a single word came out. I could not believe these words were coming from the sister I had raised.

She was the same little girl who used to cling to me in tears and say, "You're all I have left."

Now she stood in front of me, telling me I had been living there for free and that she had already been generous enough.

Then Jett chimed in and started counting on his fingers. "You've lived here seven years. Say 3,000 a month, that's 36,000 a year, so seven years comes out to 252,000. That's not even counting HOA fees or utilities. When are you planning to pay up?"

He looked up at me with a smug grin.

I switched the phone to my other hand and set the bags down on the ground."Where are you right now?" My voice was calm, so calm that even I was a little surprised."I'm... I'm at the train station." Hailey's voice grew quieter. "Jake, I'm out of money. Jett broke up with me and took everything I had. I have nowhere to stay and nothing to eat. Jake, could you... Could you send me some money?"I fell silent.I was standing at the entrance to my apartment complex. The streetlight overhead stretched my shadow long across the ground.I thought back to two months ago, when Hailey had stood in front of me and said that if I did not give her the money, she no longer had a brother. Now that same sister was calling me, asking if I could send her some money.Suddenly, I felt exhausted. It was not just physical exhaustion. I was tired down to my soul."Hailey." My voice was soft, but I was not yielding. "You're not a kid anymore. You need to take responsibility for what you've done."The

It had been taken on Christmas morning that year. The whole family had dressed up in new clothes and gone to a photo studio together. It was the last photo of the four of us together. Less than three months later, Mom and Dad were gone.As I looked at the picture, my eyes slowly grew red. I pressed my phone face down against my chest and closed my eyes.Silently, I apologized to Mom and Dad. I had not raised her right, and I had not been able to hold our family together. Still, I would live a good life, and I would live it for both of them. The days went by, and my life in the new city slowly settled into a routine. I went to work, came home, ate, and slept. On weekends, I sometimes went shopping with Dani or took walks in the park by myself.I started learning to cook the food I actually liked, loading it up with hot sauce, garlic, and all the seasonings I had never dared to use before.I started buying clothes I actually liked. I no longer had to pinch pennies or count every dol

"If you don't give me the money, as far as I'm concerned, I don't have a brother."Now, every word she had said to me came back at her like a boomerang and struck her right in the chest. When Jett saw that she was only crying and not saying anything, he rolled his eyes, turned, and left. The door slammed shut behind him.Hailey sat alone in the damp, moldy little motel room and cried for a long time.…At that same moment, I was about 750 miles away in a city down south, unpacking in my newly rented apartment when my phone buzzed. It was a message from Dale.[Jake, I've got the apartment back. Your sister and her boyfriend have moved out. She didn't look too good, though. Maybe you should give her a call?]I read the message, and my thumb hovered over the screen for a long time. In the end, I did not reply. I set my phone down and went back to unpacking. It was a small one-bedroom, but it was clean and tidy. A pothos plant sat on the windowsill, left behind by the landlord, its

Jett kept his head down and said nothing."You never planned on spending the rest of your life with me either, did you?"The room suddenly went very quiet. Outside the motel, a car drove past, and its horn blared sharply.Jett gripped the blanket so tightly that his knuckles turned white. After a long while, he finally looked up. There were no tears in his eyes, only a coldness Hailey had never seen before."Hailey, let's break up."He said it calmly, so calmly that it sounded rehearsed.Hailey froze. She opened her mouth, but her throat seemed to close up, and not a single sound came out.Jett got up and started packing his things, moving quickly as if he were in a hurry."W-What did you just say?" When she finally found her voice again, it came out painfully hoarse."I said we're done." He did not even look up."Don't blame me. I don't have a choice. You got a 400 on the college entrance exam. No college is going to take you. What are you going to do with your life? Do cons

Hailey had always assumed I would be there no matter what. She could yell at me and push me away, and no matter how cruel her words or actions were, I would always forgive her. Now, I was gone. It was not a tantrum, and it was not a threat. I was truly gone. The motel bed was hard, the pillow was flat, and the TV blaring from the room next door made it impossible to sleep. Hailey tossed and turned, and all she could think about was my face.My eyes used to crinkle at the corners whenever I smiled. Over the years, though, I had seemed to smile less and less. When was the last time she had seen me smile? She could not remember. She could not even remember how long it had been since I bought myself new clothes.Every time she told me to get something new, I would say, "This one's fine. I can still wear it." She knew perfectly well that the clothes in my closet were the ones our parents had bought before they died. When our parents passed away seven years ago, I shouldered everythi

  • Blank Out of Spite   Chapter 6

Hailey was the one who had refused to believe me. She was the one who only listened to Jett. She was the one who had pushed me down the stairs with her own hands and then walked away without looking back.Jett stared at his belongings strewn all over the hallway, looking close to tears. "Hails, do something! My game controllers! It took me forever to save up for that whole setup!"Hailey stood rooted to the spot as if every ounce of strength had been drained out of her. She could not say a single word.Jett lost his patience and jabbed her arm. "What, did you forget how to talk? Didn't you say this was your place? How did it suddenly become someone else's? Your brother's unbelievable too. If he was renting, fine, but why hide it from you? Look at this mess he made. Now we don't even have a place to live!"The more he talked, the angrier he got and the more convinced he became that he was right. Finally, he shot to his feet. "I never should have gotten with you! Your family doesn't
