Lyra stared at the scan and didn’t blink.

The monitor’s light flattened her features, turning her into something almost inhuman: all sharp angles and shadows, eyes reflecting thin bands of white and ghostly blue.

On the screen, Aiden’s heart pulsed in grayscale motion—valves opening and closing, muscle contracting, blood moving in rhythmic bursts. Overlaid in color, a hummingbird flutter of electrical activity traced his conduction pathways.

And there, in the middle of it all, lay the problem.

The camera clicked from two houses down.A soft, insectile sound under the rustle of leaves and the distant bark of a dog. It's too small for human ears at this distance. Too practiced to be accidental. The lens focused past manicured hedges and iron gates, past the subtle shimmer of Lyra’s wards, zooming in on the one soft, unprotected thing visible from the street.Luna Hale pressed her nose to the front window, fogging the glass as she drew a fat, shaky wolf with her finger.“There,” she told her reflection. “That’s Mama’s grumpy wolf.”Inside the dark car with tinted windows, a man in a baseball cap lowered the camera, checking the shot. The little girl’s profile was sharp enough even through the glass—jawline, nose, and slope of forehead. He didn’t recognize the Voss features. His client would. He tapped the screen twice to save, then scrolled through the series. Nanny is taking Luna to the park. Luna at the sandbox. Luna on a swing, hair flying. Always from a distance, always th

The clinic lobby was too bright for wolves.Lyra had argued that once with the architect—something about sensory overload, pupil dilation, and sympathetic nervous system response. The man had blinked at her and offered three lighting packages, all equally offensive. In the end, she’d chosen the least terrible. Neutral. Clinical. Unimpressed.Which was why the woman currently standing under the downlights in reception looked like she belonged in the wrong kind of story.“ID, ma’am?” the receptionist asked, doing her best not to stare. The newcomer smiled in a way that showed a lot of teeth and no warmth. “Surely you don’t need that,” she said. “You’ve seen a news article at some point in your life.”Lyra heard the exchange as she stepped out of the staff elevator onto the main floor, coffee in one hand, tablet in the other. She’d meant to head straight downstairs to review imaging.Instead, her wolf went absolutely still.Shiny hair. Luna’s words whispered back at her from the memory o

Lyra woke up hot.Not the normal, too-many-blankets, forgot-to-open-the-window kind of hot. This was heat from the inside, a slow, creeping burn under her skin that made her cotton shirt feel like sandpaper. Her alarm hadn’t gone off yet. The bedroom was still dim, city light leaking in around the edges of the blackout curtains. Beside her, the other half of the bed was empty—as it had been for years. She rolled onto her back and immediately regretted it.Her nipples tightened against the thin fabric. A prickle ran over her arms, down her ribs, pooling low in her belly. Her wolf stirred, stretching in the cage Lyra had built it, testing the bars. Not now.She threw an arm over her eyes and forced her to breathe too slow. This was supposed to be under control. Suppressants carefully tapered. Cycles flattened into something manageable. Three years of discipline and chemistry and routine. Then he’d walked back into her orbit with his broken heart and his broken wolf and his scent like pi

Lyra was late. Not clinically, not by her standards. She’d still make her first case on time. But late by the precise schedule, she usually ran her mornings on.It was Luna’s fault. And socks. And a shirt she “hated” because it didn’t have wolves on it. And the existential crisis of choosing between the blue hair tie and the purple one when the clock didn’t care.“You’re going to miss your patients,” Luna announced solemnly as she kicked her leg away from Lyra’s reach for the third time.“You’re going to miss gravity if you keep that up,” Lyra warned, finally snagging the small foot and stuffing it into the sock. “Come on. Other one.”Luna wriggled, giggling, then went suddenly serious again, face inches from Lyra’s.“Are they bad wolves today?” she asked.“Some,” Lyra said. “Most are just… broken ones.”“Like toys?” Luna tilted her head.“More like poorly designed appliances,” Lyra said. “Don’t repeat that to Nanna.”Luna snorted. “Nanna says you’re not funny.”“Nanna’s losing her ed

The rehab gym in the Blessed Luna Wing looked deceptively harmless.Sunlight filtered through tall, frosted windows. The equipment gleamed—parallel bars, treadmills, resistance bands, and balance boards. A low speaker in the corner murmured some neutral piano track meant to soothe.Aiden hated it on sight.“Up,” Lyra said.He glared at the parallel bars like they’d insulted his lineage.“I’ve been out of bed for two days,” he said. “Maybe we start with… I don’t know, sitting in a chair like an old man in a park?”“This *is* sitting in a chair,” she said. “For you.”Mei snorted from behind the rolling cart of supplies. “You’re getting the deluxe package. Most patients don’t have their surgeon personally present for PT.”“Most patients aren’t a walking PR disaster,” Lyra said. “Hands on the bars, Voss.”He wrapped his fingers around the cool metal. Left hand gripped easily; right hand lagged, fingers closing a beat late, as if the signal had to travel through molasses first.Rylan stood

Coming back felt wrong. Not the clean, groggy wrong of ordinary anesthesia, where the world blurred at the edges and sounds came muffled. This was sharper. Edged.Pain threaded through the haze first—dull in his chest, a deep, heavy ache that pulsed in time with his heartbeat. Not stabbing, not tearing. Just… there. Present. Owning the center of him. Then, temperature. Too warm under the blanket, too cool against his exposed forearms. Then sound.Steady beeping. Soft shoe-squeaks. A whispered joke at a far-off nurses’ station. The faint, familiar lilt of Mei’s voice somewhere nearby.“—he’s starting to claw his way back.”“Vitals?”“Within range. We got skill,” Mei corrected.Aiden tried to open his eyes. The lids felt like sandpaper. He forced them up anyway.Blur at first. Colors. A light overhead that wasn’t the brutal OR white but softer, Recovery Room neutral. A curtain half-drawn. The vague shape of a monitor by his left.He blinked until the room was resolved.Lyra wasn’t there
