I’d already been running, slowly hobbling, up and down the roads of the neighborhood around the Manor for two hours.

The Packhouse, where large meetings took place and where passing wolves could spend the night if needed, had a large clocktower on top which I used as a reference. I was just passing by it again, disappointed by how little time had passed since my last lap, when I ended up tripping over something and went crashing to the ground.

Wheezing, my leg throbbing, and defeated, all I wanted to do was lay there and fall asleep. Even the ever increasing shocks did little to motivate me this time. I was about to curl into a ball and wait to pass out when I caught a scent in the air.

It was the most delicious one I’d ever smelled before.

Which meant Ben was nearby, and sure enough, I could hear footsteps coming in my direction.

“Your parent’s must really think I’m dense,” Ben said cooly, holding his hand out for me to take. “I made it pretty clear at school that your no longer my f

The false bravado I had leaving the medical tent evaporated pretty much as soon as I stepped through. After speed walking back to the kitchen, thankful that I didn’t run into anyone, I went straight to the fridge where my two inhalers were still hiding. Breathing a sigh of relief, knowing I wouldn’t have to go find Master Nathian for a replacement, I used them both. The medicine one burned my lungs and made my body start to shake and sweat almost instantly. Leaning my forehead against the cool wall, I closed my eyes and focused on breathing for several minutes until the worst of the effects passed, leaving just the usual light fever effects. After tucking that one into the hidden pocket in my servant’s skirts, I used the other one and almost instantly felt better. I probably should’ve used this one as soon as I returned from the Night King’s tent last night. If I had, then I probably would’ve had the mental facilities to not make such a fool of myself. The memories of the Night King s

Maize“Ayla, why didn’t you say something to someone about this earlier today,” Rosie lectured after discarding the shirt Ayla had taped around her back. It was soaked through with blood.“Because no one would’ve believed me,” she cried, tears rolling down her cheeks as she gently laid on the bed. Misty took one of her hands while Maize sat on her other side, taking the other. Ayla tried to pull away, tensing up once more, but neither Maize nor Misty let go.“Shh, it’s alright,” Maize said gently, rubbing soothing circles into the back of Ayla’s hand. “Neither of us are going to hurt you, your safe here.”Ayla laughed, shaking her head. “If Alpha Lord Grizzle doesn’t kill me, then Elder Lord Roland will. And even if he somehow shows mercy, then Master Nathian will do it instead. Then there’s the Night King, who, who…” she couldn’t say anymore before the sobs started up again.“Ayla, don’t you worry about mother and father,” Misty said, sharing a worried look with Maize. Though they ha

The scents of Ben and Maize surrounded me a few seconds later, their worried voices calling out to me. When I felt their hands on me, trying to uncurl me, panic shot through me once more.“Please don’t touch me,” I cried out, but as soon as I saw the hurt looks on their faces, guilt made me say more. “I like you both, more than anyone, but please, don’t touch me right now. I’m sorry.”“Sweetheart,” Maize said, her eyes filled with tears. “You don’t have to apologize for that. You will have to apologize for what you almost did, but that can wait till later, once I get the chance to scold you properly. For now, just tell me what I can do to help you.”“Did the Night King do this to you,” Ben growled, looked over his shoulder at where Price Alec was standing behind Maize, a troubled look on his face. “I’ll challenge him right…”“I did this to myself,” I squeaked out, looking to Maize for help. She smacked Ben’s head before whispering fiercely. “Don’t say stupid things like that, Ben. How

The two guards tried to haul me up to my knees, but I jerked away from their hands.“Stop touching me,” I cried out, finding it almost impossible to keep my tears from falling. No one was listening to me and it was making me desperate. A crowd was forming around us by this point, many of their faces showing either annoyance or curiosity. Only Ben’s family and my own showed an sign of concern. The conern on my parents faces were purely reputaion based.“Ayla, what under the light of the moon is wrong with you,” Luna Lannie asked, her whip still cutting into my leg. “Is it true that you attacked Margaret when she offered to help lighten your chores?” The laugh that escaped my mouth sounded foreign in my ears, full of sarcasm and anger. “That’s not what…”The same servant who I shouted at before cut me off, stepping forward. “If you please, my Lord and Lady, but it’s true. The Goddess as my witness, we were busy doing our work when she came in, throwing a tantrum. When Margaret tried to

I only made it about twenty feet before I threw up.There was precious little in me, only some water and the remnants of what just happened with the Night King. Either way, it all came back up again as I struggled to hold back the tears. His Lycan had been in control of his body for nearly an hour, and I hurt everywhere. Everyone says that the longer a wolf goes without finding their mate, the more crazed and unsteady they become. I had no idea how old the Night King was, but if I was the first mate he’d ever had, it explained what the hell just happened. But knowing the why did precious little to help cope with memories, ones I desperately wanted to bury deep and never relive. Sadly, as I limped back towards the Lodge, forced to keep my legs spread wider than usual to ease the soreness, I could think of little else.Once he was finally spent and gained control from his Lycan, the Night King unleased a string of curses before ordering me to be gone before he returned. He then swept ou

As soon as I was ushered inside, I dropped to my knees, my face flushing instantly. The Royal Beta noticed at once and chuckled. “What’s the matter, little wolf? You seem embarrassed about something,” he said, walking over to Luther and slapping his shoulder. “Come, my friend. Let’s go train a little.”I could feel Luther’s gaze on the back of my head for a second before they left.“Brit,” the Night King said, and I could feel her using her magic. For a moment I flinched, thinking she was going to hurt me, but instead I felt the pressure in the room grow. A telltale sign that a barrior of some kind was established. No doubt to make the tent private from any eavesdroppers. She then stepped out of the tent as well, leaving me alone with him.He finally took a step forward from the shadows of the tent and I could no longer ignore his presence. Terrified at first, my heart racing in my chest, everything changed when he came close enough for his scent to fill my nose. It was the most amazi
