Her eyes fluttered opened as the juggling sound of keys reached her ears as she stirred awake in time to watch as a few guards walked into the cell she shared with her husband.

“What’s going on?” Her broken voice called out, watching as the guards approached her sleeping mate and kicked him on the rib, waking him up as he groaned out in pain.

Ignoring her questions, the guards hooked their hands on her mate’s arms and carried him out from the cell.

“Hey, what are you doing?!” She stumbled up on her feet but landed up falling back on the wall as a cry escaped her mouth, supporting her stomach with both her hands and stared as two other guards walked up to her. “Please, what’s going on. Where are they taking my mate?” Her pleading voice inquired.

“To the arena, you were given the front ticket to watch”

Yarkona’s mouth fell open at the words of the guard as they hooked their hands under her arms and carried her out from the dungeons.

Everything went by a blurry in her eyes till they stopped in the large arena of the pack. Her teary gaze went around and noticed how the arena was filled up with people, their attention was glued to the center where her mate was tied up, a large guillotine over his head. But amid this ordeal, none of his family members were in sight, they had abandoned him in his greatest time of need.

Yarkona’s gaze went back to her mate, staring at his helpless form as he stood there without struggle, as if he already knew his fate as if he had given up and Yarkona couldn’t help but condemn herself. It would be been better to die fighting than die in this nefarious way and from the nook of her eyes, she could see Beta Quade smirking with glee and his arms folded over his broad chest.

Yarkona stared at him with scorn and seconds later, the Alpha came out to address his people. His dark orbs equally staring her at mate with disgust. An Alpha was supposed to protect his people, not beheading his subjects for crimes they knew nothing of. As Yarkona stared at the Alpha and every living wolf in the arena, she felt nothing but resentment, animosity, anger, she felt like erupting.

“From this day forth, the Romana household shall forever be a traitor to our pack and for this reason I, Alpha Zahir charged Elea Romana with treason against the pack and the packhouse and shall be beheaded for his crimes. I pray to the goddess that we all learn from his mistake and know the consequences!” The Alpha yelled out to the people, signaling his hand to the guard in charge of the guillotine.

“Stop!” Yarkona screamed on top of her lungs, wanting to rush to her mate but the guards held her tightly by each hand, holding her in place. She wanted nothing more than crawl to her mate, the father of their unborn baby, kneeling there in disgrace, head downcast, yowling in shame, and even from where she stood, she could see the way his shoulders vibrated as he tried to mute out his cries, his shameful eyes never for once meeting the teary ones of his mate. “ELEA!” She screamed even louder as the guards got ready to take out the Alpha’s final orders.

Yarkona shook her head violently, tears poured down her face like a waterfall as she struggled with the guards. “Please, don’t kill him. He’s innocent!” She yelled but her words seemed to have fallen on deaf ears, pleading with her eyes but her gaze seemed to have landed on the new Luna of their pack. Her screams stopped for a while as she noticed the satisfied grin on the woman’s lips and as if she felt being watched, Luna’s gaze met Yarkona’s and she smirked before looking away and for the second time, Yarkona realized her mate was suffering an injustice.

But before she could plead any further, the Alpha gave his final signal, and right before her widened eyes, the silver guillotine was released and chopped through her mate’s neck like some wood and his head rolled right to her feet, and his pale eyes filled with nothingness met hers and Yarkona let out the loudest scream that had all the ears in the arena bleeding.

*******”*””””””*”*********

Sobs, more sobs left her mouth from where she sat on the dark, lone, dirty, wet dungeon. She wiped her tears but more rushed out as her shoulder’s vibrated while nothing but anger flowed through her.

Her mate was gone and she was next in line to suffer for something she knew nothing of.

Yarkona continued to weep for the loss of her mate, she wailed loudly knowing she had been abandoned by her creator, nothing but sorrow and helplessness owned her.

Her hand up went to her where her mate mark once laid but it was now clean, fresh as if nothing was there before and once again reality hammered her to the ground and she let out another shaky sob.

But suddenly, the sound of footsteps reached her ears and her head jerked up to find a pregnant woman in front of her with a touch that brightened up the entire space.

Yarkona’s cries instantly stopped and she slowly stood up on her feet and walked closer to the bars that separated them. “This was all your making, wasn’t it, Yaletha?” Yarkona’s gaze bore through the face that was identical to her.

Yaletha’s free hand slowly went up to her equally heavy stomach, she was due any moment just like the woman in front of her. Two identical faces stared at each other, their expression mirroring each other but Yarkona’s gaze was harsher. “Believe me, sister, I never planned for him to be killed, I only wanted her gone,”

Yarkona suddenly gripped the iron bars tightly. “You killed my mate, how dare you call me your sister, you greedy witch!” Her voice rose higher than intended while Yaletha remained calm.

“I’m not sorry Yarkona, I needed to be the next Luna of this pack. He was easy of a pawn”

“He trusted you because you are my sister!” Yarkona shook the bars. “How could you live with yourself knowing your killed you twin sister’s mate?!”

“I did nothing wrong, this benefits both of us Yarkona. This is the only way we can secure our place in this pack. With me as Luna and the mother of the Future Alpha, no one can ask us to leave” Yaletha spoke with no remorse in her voice. She did what she had to do. “You can always get yourself a new mate, after all, Elea wasn’t your destined. You’re a witch, our kind aren’t allowed to have werewolves as mates and you know that”

“I hope you die with that child, Yaletha!” Yarkona gritted through her teethes but her twin sister stared at her calmly, showing no regret of her actions.

“Since we can’t work together, I will help you get out from here if you promise never to return and keep this little secret between ourselves, not that anyone would believe you if you chose to open your mouth”

“If I ever get out of here, I will kill you and that child and everyone that witnessed the death of my mate!”

Both sisters stared at each other, their faces identical yet, their eyes told a different story. A furious pair of lime green orbs met an unremorseful pair of blue and from that moment on, they knew a line had been forever drawn between their midst.
