The phone buzzed again, vibrating against the nightstand like it was demanding to be answered. Richard’s name glowed on the screen, sharp and unrelenting. My thumb hovered above it, my pulse thundering in my ears.

I wanted to hear his voice God, I wanted to but I hesitated. What if he asked questions I wasn’t ready to answer? What if I sounded weak?

One second more and I would’ve swiped.

But the ringing cut off, plunging my room into silence.

A hollow ache spread in my chest. I hated myself for waiting too long.

Then the soft ping of a message. I snatched the phone instantly.

Richard: Sorry for keeping you so late. I hope you got home safe. But don’t get too comfortable, this isn’t an excuse for lateness tomorrow.

My lips parted. The words were so… Richard. Firm, professional, clipped. But underneath, a faint tug of humor peeked through. He wasn’t scolding me—he was teasing, in his own guarded way.

A laugh escaped me before I could stop it. A light, nervous giggle in the quiet

The night hadn’t ended when I left Richard’s apartment. Hours later, a knock came. I jolted from where i sat wrapped the sofa, my face blotchy with tears. I already knew who it was.“Selena,” Richard’s voice was rough through the wood, urgent, like gravel dragged across steel. “Open the door.”I pressed my palms against my thighs, torn between slamming the door shut in his face and throwing myself into his arms. Against my better judgment, i twisted the lock. The door flew open before i could step back. Richard filled the doorway.“You can’t just walk out on me like that,” he rasped, stepping inside, his presence swallowing the small space of my apartment. My throat burned. “I should. You’ve already decided everything for us.”“No.” His hands framed my face suddenly, thumbs brushing over my damp skin as though he could erase the tears he had caused. “Don’t twist this. I’m begging you, Selena, come with me. To Milan. Start over. With me.”I pushed his hands down, shaking my head. “I c

The elevator ride to Richard’s apartment was suffocating. I kept staring at my reflection in the mirrored walls. My eyes wide with shock, lips shaky, every ounce of my body trying to hold back the storm inside. I hated that i still came here after hearing him say the words. Milan. Leaving. Protecting me by walking away.By the time i reached his door, i wasn’t sure if i wanted to fall into his arms or claw at his chest until he bled.Richard opened almost immediately, as if he had been waiting for me. “Selena…”“Don’t,” i snapped, storming past him into the apartment. The city skyline glowed behind the windows, but the beauty of it only made the ache sharper. I spun on him, fury and heartbreak twisting inside me. “You were just going to leave? Just like that?”His shoulders tensed. “It’s not like that.”“Then explain it to me,” i demanded. “Explain how the man who swore he loved me, who touched me like I was the only woman alive, could so easily decide to walk away.”His voice rose w

Richard’s office burned with a tension hotter than fire. Hours had passed since Damien’s very public outburst in the boardroom, but the storm hadn’t settled—it had simply shifted. Every employee at Roth Enterprise was whispering, gossip spreading like wildfire through hallways and glass partitions.Richard stood by the side of the window, his posture stiff, jaw clenched as though he was holding himself together with force. Behind him, the door creaked open.“Richard,” I whispered. He turned, and the sight of me was enough to crack his defenses. “They’re saying things,” I said in a rush. “About you. About me. About us. Damien…he….”“I know,” Richard cut in, his voice low, almost dangerous. “I heard enough.”I moved closer, my heels clicking against the polished wood, the sound echoing far too loudly in the silence. “Tell me this will blow over. Tell me Damien was bluffing, that he won’t let this destroy you.”Richard laughed bitterly, running a hand through his hair. “Bluffing? No. He

  • Blood Ties and Billionaire Lies   Chapter 47: The Aftermath

The ping of a thousand notifications was the death toll of silence in Roth Enterprise. My eyes were locked on headline flashing through my monitor:SCANDAL AT THE TOP: CEO DAMIEN ROTH’S BEST FRIEND AND EMPLOYEE EXPOSED IN AFFAIR.Below it, two photographs screamed our guilt to the entire company. Me and Richard, my hands tangled in his hair, his mouth devouring mine, the desk beneath us filled with scattered files. My stomach dropped, my breath came in shallow gasps. Blood screamed in my ears like a storm. No. No, no, no….Outside my office walls, whispers turned into open chatter. I could feel the stares, the pointing fingers at every corner. Colleagues who had once smiled politely now sneered or leaned together in conspiratorial huddles. My skin burned under the weight of a hundred invisible spotlights. The door slammed open. Cassandra strode in, heels clicking against the floor. “Selena,” she hissed, shutting the door behind her. “Do you have any idea what’s happening out there?”

Damien shoved Richard in the middle of the executive room, and it immediately felt like the world stopped moving. Assistants froze, wide-eyed. The glass walls reflected Damien’s rage and Richard’s surprisingly calm posture. My heart hammered in my ears. I was standing there when Damien’s voice, sharp, sliced through the air.“You knew how I felt about her, Richard!” Damien barked, his fist raised, his face burning. “You knew…and still you went behind my back like a thief.”Richard, caught his wrist midair. “Don’t make this uglier than it already is,” he said, his voice low. “What happened between Selena and I isn't betrayal….it’s love. Something you wouldn’t understand, because you’ve only ever tried to own people, not cherish them.”Gasps moved through the office. A CEO being accused—publicly—of treating women as possessions? It was blood in the water, and the sharks—employees, board members, assistants—were circling with whispers that would soon spiral into gossip storms.I felt my

The boardroom had never been so quiet as it is now. Every one in the room was locked on Damien Roth. His jaw was tight, his fingers drumming against the table, and beside him Richard D. Morgan stood like a wall of stone, his face unreadable.I sat a few chairs down, my stomach twisting. The scent of tension was thicker than any cologne. The board members had heard the shouting match in the corridor, everyone heard. Damien finally broke the silence. His voice was sharp, cutting.“Do you all know what’s been happening under my nose? My best friend….my brother….has been taking liberties with my employees. With her.” He jabbed a finger in my direction.Gasps and murmurs erupted around the table. My heart pounded as heat rose to my cheeks. I wanted to disappear.Richard’s voice came, calm but edged with steel. “That’s enough, Damien.” He stepped forward. “This isn’t about the company. It’s about you. About your obsession with control. You think you can dictate her life, dictate mine. You
