Chapter 4

Author: July Chestnut
Yvie ran up to me, holding my hands as she smiled pretentiously. "Thank you, Bea. You surprised me… You're so brave!"

At the same time, her eyes were glaring at me threateningly.

I shoved her hands away and left, still famished.

I should've given up at that very moment.

-

"You're two months pregnant but never noticed? You should stay for observation."

I was left gaping as I sat on the hospital chair, shaking even as I stared at the medical report.

I had to be pregnant now?

Martin despised me and naturally wouldn't want the child in my belly—he definitely wouldn't change his opinion of me even if I was pregnant and would say that I was being a scheming harlot trying to force him to marry me.

But the day after, I mustered my courage and called him anyway.

If he didn't want my child, I'd just get an abortion and leave instead of staying to bother him.

Beep, beep, beep…

I tried countless times, but he never answered.

However, I got through when I tried one last time… but it was Yvie who answered.

"Hey, Bea!" she chirped. "Are you looking for Martin? But he's tired and needs rest…"

"Why waste your breath? Just tell her not to bother me." Martin snorted impatiently on the other end.

Yvie giggled. "Stop it—I'm on my period. Not tonight…"

I collapsed on the couch stiffly, still holding my phone.

-

Later that night, Martin came home to Fitz Lane, but he also brought Yvie along.

Mrs. Fitzgerald frowned in annoyance. "Why did you bring her here?"

"We're getting engaged. Just giving you a head's up," Martin said with a tone that permitted no refusal.

Shocked, Mrs. Fitzgerald turned toward me before she knew it, but I said nothing even though tears welled up in my eyes.

Seeing that, Mrs. Fitzgerald quickly said, "No, I must protest. You're engaged to Bea—"

"That serial killer in the news is after Yvie," Martin said, cutting her short. "But he only chooses single women, so I'll make sure our wedding is very public."

He didn't even bother to hide the great lengths he would go to for her sake!

My stomach suddenly started churning, and I jumped up, dashing straight for the washroom, where I puked my guts out.

What did that man take me for?

-

I was eighteen when my parents and I got into a car accident.

I was trapped in the car's bent frame while it burned and could blow up at any moment.

Even so, Martin saved me without an ounce of self-regard.

He kept punching the windshield until it shattered, pulling me out of the car despite his bleeding hands to carry me to safety.

Then, he tried to save my parents too.

"Martin… It's too dangerous…" I called out feebly, but I could otherwise only watch as he tried his damndest.

But just as my parents almost got out of the car, it exploded.

My heart skipped a beat amid the heat and shockwaves.

Even though my parents died, the sight of Martin selflessly saving me was carved into my heart.

"It's alright, Bea. You're going to be fine, Bea…"

He kept calling my name, telling me to hold on, and that the ambulance would soon come.

He was a good man—he always had been.

The only problem was that he didn't love me.

-

Back in the present, I kept vomiting until there was nothing left to vomit.

As my vision darkened, I collapsed on the floor as I remembered that Martin was going to marry Yvie soon, while I had only ever been a joke because of a misunderstanding that lasted for so many years.

"Playing dead again?!"

The washroom door was kicked open, and Martin stood at the doorway, glaring at me in annoyance. "You're going to that alley down Wisteria Lane tomorrow night. Drop the act—everything's been arranged."

"Martin… Aren't you worried that I'm going to die?" I rasped.

"No, you're resilient—in fact, you're so resilient that you're perfect for that serial killer!"

Martin chuckled coolly. "If you'd just direct the energy you used to bother me into bothering that killer, you might even contribute to society!"

"Will you be sad… if I die?" I rasped again.

Martin frowned. "Let me get back to you when you're actually dead."

  • Blood of Regret   Chapter 100

I gasped. What did this man make Beatrix do? Did it have something to do with Star? Also, Star believed that Beatrix was really Beatrice? When he called me Bea, he meant Beatrice and not Beatrix?"I see…" My fingers tightened around my phone.I wanted to run and call the cops—this man was definitely the serial killer.Still, he suddenly waved me off. “You can go now.” I nodded and promptly turned to leave, and I had just reached the door when he growled, "Quit fantasizing. Even if he thinks you're Beatrice, he won’t really have feelings for you.” I said nothing and ran out of the house without looking back, my legs feeling like they could cave.I took out my phone—I wanted to call the police, but soon realized… What should I say? That the man was the serial killer? But if so, where was my evidence? And if he was freed because there was no actual evidence against him, wouldn't that basically lead him back to me?Also, why would he stay in my house? Was it a provocation o

  • Blood of Regret   Chapter 99

As I left Lachmann Manor, I headed to the apartment where I had lived as Beatrice Cox.After my parents' death, that was the only place I had after I sold every other estate to pay off their debts and the only place which embodied my parents' memories. It had been a while since I had been here, and I stared at the building with a myriad of different emotions as I got out of the taxi.I took out the key hidden in the flowerpot outside, standing in front of the door in silence for a long while before opening it.Naturally, it was quiet inside. I looked around at my photos and my parents' old possessions—the place hadn't changed, but everything else had.I stared at the tapestries on the wall as I sat on the couch, feeling like everything was a dream…Click.I straightened when I heard that soft sound, tensing up from head to toe…Someone was here?!I didn't dare to turn and gingerly reached out for my phone to call the cops. However, as always when a person panicked, even swi

In the garden, Nelly was crying in a man's arms. "How dare she?! She hit me! She has no right! Does she think she's that impressive just because she married into the Lachmann family?! They don't even have heirs, and she married a crazy bum who's living off trash heaps! He's as ugly as he is filthy!" I stood nearby, chuckling coolly as I listened to her rant.Stariel, ugly? I had never actually met another man who was better looking than he was.Still, the man patted Nelly's back and told her, "It's alright, just calm down—she's stupid anyway, so those two deserve each other. Even if she gets a little cocky, she's still basically working for you! Once she gets her hands on the Lachmann Group shares, she has no choice but to give them to you, and the whole company will be ours."I rolled my eyes—how delusional could they be?Still, I walked up to them and scoffed. "I knew something didn't smell right. Come on, it's broad daylight—leave the mating calls until night comes."Nelly's

  • Blood of Regret   Chapter 97

I naturally wasn't counting on the Lachmanns to save Beatrix's grandma's life, but I now had a plan after finding out Carl's trump card. And it was his blunder if he thought I was still the same Beatrix whom he could manipulate at will.In the past, Beatrix would've cared about her family, but that wasn't the case for me, as my parents had died in an accident when I was eighteen. If anything, Carl and his wife had no right calling themselves parents.Still, I smiled and said, "Please, you're misunderstanding something here—I may be basically the head of the Lachmanns, but my potential allies are Miguel and Hector. Neither are in any state to make any decisions even if they make it back here."Carl snorted and narrowed his eyes. "You may have returned to us when you were eighteen, but we've still fulfilled our obligation to you ever since. Remember—your mother and I are your real parents, and our blood runs in your veins. Understand that whether we rise or fall depends entirely on

Smack!I audibly slapped Nelly again. "That's so that you'll remember your manners. I'm your elder sister, and Stariel is your brother-in-law. How bold of you to insult the Lachmanns… Or perhaps you'd rather have them withdraw their support and let Lecter Links fall to bankruptcy?"Nelly stared at me blankly again, unable to understand how I was this ruthless, unlike before.I ignored her and pushed her out of the way as I strode into the living room, where Carl Lecter sat menacingly on the couch.Still, he at least tried to fake niceties when he saw me. "Come in, Bea. You're now a VIP even to the Lachmanns—you need to be very careful with the little one in your belly."I smiled as I watched my so-called father. "Yes, you're right—this baby is the sole heir to the main branch of the Lachmann family. Once he's born, he'll be the head of the family."Carl studied me and eventually asked quietly, "So, you understand now?"I stayed silent and quietly waited for him to continue. "Wit

  • Blood of Regret   Chapter 95

Still, I feigned ignorance and asked coolly, "Who the devil are you?"Nelly's face dropped, clearly upset.Still, she soon giggled. "Oh, poor sister… We all heard that old Miguel is taken ill, and it's just you and that nutjob left in the main branch of the Lachmann family."I never bothered to look at her—she was an amateur compared to Yvie.No one would ever suspect Yvie for any sinister intentions, whereas you could see the evil written all over Nelly's face.Dogs that bit never barked much—in that sense, Yvie was far more impressive than Nelly. But now, I didn't fear Yvie, so why should I fear a spoiled brat like Nelly?Nonetheless, Nelly seemed upset and strode in my way. "What's that attitude?! Do you think you're a big deal now just because I called you my sister?!"I narrowed my eyes.Nelly was supposed to marry Star in the first place, but because she was frail as a child, and the Lecters doted on her, they were unwilling to throw her to the wolves and let Beatrix do
