Chapter 7

Author: July Chestnut
Martin snorted in annoyance, clearly embarrassed. "I told you—Beatrice is alive, and who she is to me has nothing to do with this case!"

Jason retorted in equal annoyance, "We're asking for your cooperation here, Mr. Fitzgerald. Please don't further complicate this investigation."

I was laughing at Jason right then. "There's no way he'd tell you the things he did to his so-called sister...

"Cap!" Another police officer came running down the hallway just then. "We have confirmed the blood and skin tissue samples. They belong to Beatrice Cox, not the victim."

Jason nodded. "Then we must presume that the serial killer got to her as well."

"No," Martin said, clenching his knuckles. "Beatrice is smart. She's just trying to stage her death to be dramatic."

Seeing that he still refused to believe that I was dead, I sighed in exasperation, once again disappointed.

Jason narrowed his eyes in turn. "Mr. Fitzgerald, your refusal to cooperate will slow us down to the point that we won't be able to save Ms. Cox in time. If our serial killer has her, she'll despair even as she waits!"

My eyes were reddened, and tears welled up in them as I turned back to Jason—he was definitely right, as no one knew how much I despaired before I died.

I prayed countless times for the cops—or even Martin—to reach me.

But in the end, just remembering Martin left my heart hurting.

Ring!!!

Martin's phone rang.

As he answered, Yvie shouted in agitation from the other end, "Martin! I just saw Bea at Nightzone!"

Martin did a double take but soon turned to Jason, who looked sharply at his colleague. "Get moving!"

I shouted right then, "No, don't go! She's just trying to distract you so that you won't find my body! Don't believe her!"

Naturally, no one was listening.

Even as I followed Martin, he clearly believed Yvie, not even stopping to ask what I might be doing at a seedy nightclub like Nightzone this late at night.

He was cursing my name like he would kill me when he got me.

Thankfully, he wouldn't have the chance to do so.

-

Jason and the officers were dressed casually as they reached Nightzone, following Martin to reach Yvie, who was at once sobbing, "I came looking for you because I'm scared of the thunder… Then, I saw Bea sneaking around suspiciously before coming in here, but it's so crowded that I lost her…"

Martin quickly hugged her. "It's fine. Everything's alright now."

As for the officers, they were staring at Yvie for a moment before entering Nightzone, although they found nothing after spending the night searching.

I followed Jason, sighing. "It's really hard being a cop, having to run around this late at night just to follow a so-called lead…"

That was when someone yelled, "Stop!"

A burly figure wearing a hoodie was just leaving an alley and started to run when an officer told him to stop.

The other officers promptly gave chase, quickly subduing him.

When I saw the man's face, I was reeling in shock.

It seemed that my fear lived on even in death, as that face was as handsome as any A-list actor, and his skin astonishingly pale… But he was also the same crazy serial killer who took my life!

"What are you running around in the middle of the night for?" One of the officers kicked him just then.

However, his eyes were fixed in my direction.

I clasped my hand over my mouth in fear.

H-He could see me?!

I gasped. What did this man make Beatrix do? Did it have something to do with Star? Also, Star believed that Beatrix was really Beatrice? When he called me Bea, he meant Beatrice and not Beatrix?"I see…" My fingers tightened around my phone.I wanted to run and call the cops—this man was definitely the serial killer.Still, he suddenly waved me off. “You can go now.” I nodded and promptly turned to leave, and I had just reached the door when he growled, "Quit fantasizing. Even if he thinks you're Beatrice, he won’t really have feelings for you.” I said nothing and ran out of the house without looking back, my legs feeling like they could cave.I took out my phone—I wanted to call the police, but soon realized… What should I say? That the man was the serial killer? But if so, where was my evidence? And if he was freed because there was no actual evidence against him, wouldn't that basically lead him back to me?Also, why would he stay in my house? Was it a provocation o

  • Blood of Regret   Chapter 99

As I left Lachmann Manor, I headed to the apartment where I had lived as Beatrice Cox.After my parents' death, that was the only place I had after I sold every other estate to pay off their debts and the only place which embodied my parents' memories. It had been a while since I had been here, and I stared at the building with a myriad of different emotions as I got out of the taxi.I took out the key hidden in the flowerpot outside, standing in front of the door in silence for a long while before opening it.Naturally, it was quiet inside. I looked around at my photos and my parents' old possessions—the place hadn't changed, but everything else had.I stared at the tapestries on the wall as I sat on the couch, feeling like everything was a dream…Click.I straightened when I heard that soft sound, tensing up from head to toe…Someone was here?!I didn't dare to turn and gingerly reached out for my phone to call the cops. However, as always when a person panicked, even swi

In the garden, Nelly was crying in a man's arms. "How dare she?! She hit me! She has no right! Does she think she's that impressive just because she married into the Lachmann family?! They don't even have heirs, and she married a crazy bum who's living off trash heaps! He's as ugly as he is filthy!" I stood nearby, chuckling coolly as I listened to her rant.Stariel, ugly? I had never actually met another man who was better looking than he was.Still, the man patted Nelly's back and told her, "It's alright, just calm down—she's stupid anyway, so those two deserve each other. Even if she gets a little cocky, she's still basically working for you! Once she gets her hands on the Lachmann Group shares, she has no choice but to give them to you, and the whole company will be ours."I rolled my eyes—how delusional could they be?Still, I walked up to them and scoffed. "I knew something didn't smell right. Come on, it's broad daylight—leave the mating calls until night comes."Nelly's

I naturally wasn't counting on the Lachmanns to save Beatrix's grandma's life, but I now had a plan after finding out Carl's trump card. And it was his blunder if he thought I was still the same Beatrix whom he could manipulate at will.In the past, Beatrix would've cared about her family, but that wasn't the case for me, as my parents had died in an accident when I was eighteen. If anything, Carl and his wife had no right calling themselves parents.Still, I smiled and said, "Please, you're misunderstanding something here—I may be basically the head of the Lachmanns, but my potential allies are Miguel and Hector. Neither are in any state to make any decisions even if they make it back here."Carl snorted and narrowed his eyes. "You may have returned to us when you were eighteen, but we've still fulfilled our obligation to you ever since. Remember—your mother and I are your real parents, and our blood runs in your veins. Understand that whether we rise or fall depends entirely on

Smack!I audibly slapped Nelly again. "That's so that you'll remember your manners. I'm your elder sister, and Stariel is your brother-in-law. How bold of you to insult the Lachmanns… Or perhaps you'd rather have them withdraw their support and let Lecter Links fall to bankruptcy?"Nelly stared at me blankly again, unable to understand how I was this ruthless, unlike before.I ignored her and pushed her out of the way as I strode into the living room, where Carl Lecter sat menacingly on the couch.Still, he at least tried to fake niceties when he saw me. "Come in, Bea. You're now a VIP even to the Lachmanns—you need to be very careful with the little one in your belly."I smiled as I watched my so-called father. "Yes, you're right—this baby is the sole heir to the main branch of the Lachmann family. Once he's born, he'll be the head of the family."Carl studied me and eventually asked quietly, "So, you understand now?"I stayed silent and quietly waited for him to continue. "Wit

  • Blood of Regret   Chapter 95

Still, I feigned ignorance and asked coolly, "Who the devil are you?"Nelly's face dropped, clearly upset.Still, she soon giggled. "Oh, poor sister… We all heard that old Miguel is taken ill, and it's just you and that nutjob left in the main branch of the Lachmann family."I never bothered to look at her—she was an amateur compared to Yvie.No one would ever suspect Yvie for any sinister intentions, whereas you could see the evil written all over Nelly's face.Dogs that bit never barked much—in that sense, Yvie was far more impressive than Nelly. But now, I didn't fear Yvie, so why should I fear a spoiled brat like Nelly?Nonetheless, Nelly seemed upset and strode in my way. "What's that attitude?! Do you think you're a big deal now just because I called you my sister?!"I narrowed my eyes.Nelly was supposed to marry Star in the first place, but because she was frail as a child, and the Lecters doted on her, they were unwilling to throw her to the wolves and let Beatrix do
