Chapter 8

Author: July Chestnut
That was when I heard Yvie saying, "Martin, he's staring at me… He's so scary…"

I turned to see her trembling and hiding behind Martin's back and breathed a sigh of relief.

So the killer was looking at her, not me…

He seemed to be furious nonetheless, just as an officer said, "He's cool. He's just an orphan who left a nearby orphanage—people around here call him Star. I've arrested him before for snatching a woman's purse."

I was left shaking my head repeatedly. "No! He's the killer!"

However, the cops released Star with their colleague's assurance, while he pushed himself off the floor.

His legs were so long that his jeans didn't reach his ankles, and I could see the gruesome burns on them.

I was worried he would keep killing and followed him despite my fear, until he stopped beside Yvie and rasped in his broken voice, "You…"

Yvie was trembling all over even as she looked at Star, while I looked at him in shock too.

He knew that Yvie had set me up?!

That was when Jason walked up to Martin, nodding apologetically as he said, "Apologies for calling you out here this late at night, Mr. Fitzgerald. Do reach out to us if Ms. Cox ever makes contact—here's my number."

Martin snorted but took the business card as he left with Yvie.

Watching as they headed off to the distance, Jason told his colleague, "Find out the connection between those two and Beatrice. It's definitely something messed up."

"What? How'd you know?" his colleague blurted.

"Would you know if your sister has a mole on her breast or a birthmark on her crotch?"

"Shit…" The colleague gaped in shock. "That civilized look definitely had me fooled!"

Jason nodded. "Yeah, so start looking!"

I followed Star, because I didn't want to see what Martin was doing with Yvie anymore.

After being released, he limped away, clearly heading to where my body was.

When he arrived outside a rundown orphanage, he deftly climbed inside.

I looked around, my breathing turning rushed—this was where Star had brought me before he killed me!

It must also be where he had killed the other women!

As such, I followed Star closely to see if I could find my body.

However, he didn't go to his slaughterhouse—instead, he went to one of the rundown buildings.

Then, getting into a room filled with litter, he sat, curled up in a corner.

It was clear that he usually lived here.

I wandered around the rest of the orphanage for a long while, but I still couldn't find the basement where I died.

It was therefore not surprising that the cops couldn't find a thing even after so long.

Bang!

That was when a car rammed through the front gates.

Star stepped out, at once wary as he saw the unexpected visitors.

I looked on, not surprised as Martin got out of the car, while Yvie stayed inside, trembling.

"That's him," she said, pointing at Star. "I don't know if he's the killer, but he's been following me for days."

I was taken aback—so she never accused him in front of the cops and instead told Martin.

Martin didn't go to the cops either, and instead brought his buddies.

Naturally. Star tried to get away but couldn't, as Martin's buddies quickly surrounded him and clobbered him with bats and poles.

"A freakin' homeless bum lusting after Yvie?"

"Hah! He actually wasn't interested in Beatrice Cox? What is he, a homeless bum with standards?"

Star shielded his head with his arms even as he lay curled on the ground and took the beating.

If anything, he looked like he was used to it.

And when Martin's buddies were done, Martin walked up and showed Star a photo of me. "Have you seen this woman?"

At that moment, I wondered if he actually felt doubt and considered the possibility that I really was dead.

I gasped. What did this man make Beatrix do? Did it have something to do with Star? Also, Star believed that Beatrix was really Beatrice? When he called me Bea, he meant Beatrice and not Beatrix?"I see…" My fingers tightened around my phone.I wanted to run and call the cops—this man was definitely the serial killer.Still, he suddenly waved me off. “You can go now.” I nodded and promptly turned to leave, and I had just reached the door when he growled, "Quit fantasizing. Even if he thinks you're Beatrice, he won’t really have feelings for you.” I said nothing and ran out of the house without looking back, my legs feeling like they could cave.I took out my phone—I wanted to call the police, but soon realized… What should I say? That the man was the serial killer? But if so, where was my evidence? And if he was freed because there was no actual evidence against him, wouldn't that basically lead him back to me?Also, why would he stay in my house? Was it a provocation o

  • Blood of Regret   Chapter 99

As I left Lachmann Manor, I headed to the apartment where I had lived as Beatrice Cox.After my parents' death, that was the only place I had after I sold every other estate to pay off their debts and the only place which embodied my parents' memories. It had been a while since I had been here, and I stared at the building with a myriad of different emotions as I got out of the taxi.I took out the key hidden in the flowerpot outside, standing in front of the door in silence for a long while before opening it.Naturally, it was quiet inside. I looked around at my photos and my parents' old possessions—the place hadn't changed, but everything else had.I stared at the tapestries on the wall as I sat on the couch, feeling like everything was a dream…Click.I straightened when I heard that soft sound, tensing up from head to toe…Someone was here?!I didn't dare to turn and gingerly reached out for my phone to call the cops. However, as always when a person panicked, even swi

In the garden, Nelly was crying in a man's arms. "How dare she?! She hit me! She has no right! Does she think she's that impressive just because she married into the Lachmann family?! They don't even have heirs, and she married a crazy bum who's living off trash heaps! He's as ugly as he is filthy!" I stood nearby, chuckling coolly as I listened to her rant.Stariel, ugly? I had never actually met another man who was better looking than he was.Still, the man patted Nelly's back and told her, "It's alright, just calm down—she's stupid anyway, so those two deserve each other. Even if she gets a little cocky, she's still basically working for you! Once she gets her hands on the Lachmann Group shares, she has no choice but to give them to you, and the whole company will be ours."I rolled my eyes—how delusional could they be?Still, I walked up to them and scoffed. "I knew something didn't smell right. Come on, it's broad daylight—leave the mating calls until night comes."Nelly's

I naturally wasn't counting on the Lachmanns to save Beatrix's grandma's life, but I now had a plan after finding out Carl's trump card. And it was his blunder if he thought I was still the same Beatrix whom he could manipulate at will.In the past, Beatrix would've cared about her family, but that wasn't the case for me, as my parents had died in an accident when I was eighteen. If anything, Carl and his wife had no right calling themselves parents.Still, I smiled and said, "Please, you're misunderstanding something here—I may be basically the head of the Lachmanns, but my potential allies are Miguel and Hector. Neither are in any state to make any decisions even if they make it back here."Carl snorted and narrowed his eyes. "You may have returned to us when you were eighteen, but we've still fulfilled our obligation to you ever since. Remember—your mother and I are your real parents, and our blood runs in your veins. Understand that whether we rise or fall depends entirely on

Smack!I audibly slapped Nelly again. "That's so that you'll remember your manners. I'm your elder sister, and Stariel is your brother-in-law. How bold of you to insult the Lachmanns… Or perhaps you'd rather have them withdraw their support and let Lecter Links fall to bankruptcy?"Nelly stared at me blankly again, unable to understand how I was this ruthless, unlike before.I ignored her and pushed her out of the way as I strode into the living room, where Carl Lecter sat menacingly on the couch.Still, he at least tried to fake niceties when he saw me. "Come in, Bea. You're now a VIP even to the Lachmanns—you need to be very careful with the little one in your belly."I smiled as I watched my so-called father. "Yes, you're right—this baby is the sole heir to the main branch of the Lachmann family. Once he's born, he'll be the head of the family."Carl studied me and eventually asked quietly, "So, you understand now?"I stayed silent and quietly waited for him to continue. "Wit

Still, I feigned ignorance and asked coolly, "Who the devil are you?"Nelly's face dropped, clearly upset.Still, she soon giggled. "Oh, poor sister… We all heard that old Miguel is taken ill, and it's just you and that nutjob left in the main branch of the Lachmann family."I never bothered to look at her—she was an amateur compared to Yvie.No one would ever suspect Yvie for any sinister intentions, whereas you could see the evil written all over Nelly's face.Dogs that bit never barked much—in that sense, Yvie was far more impressive than Nelly. But now, I didn't fear Yvie, so why should I fear a spoiled brat like Nelly?Nonetheless, Nelly seemed upset and strode in my way. "What's that attitude?! Do you think you're a big deal now just because I called you my sister?!"I narrowed my eyes.Nelly was supposed to marry Star in the first place, but because she was frail as a child, and the Lecters doted on her, they were unwilling to throw her to the wolves and let Beatrix do
