Chapter 4

Wendigo (creature)

Wendigo is a creature that was once human but was transformed into an immortal evil spirit when it took up the practice of cannibalism. Wendigos are cursed to wander the land, eternally seeking to fulfill their voracious appetite for human flesh. Various Native American tribes tell slightly different stories about this creature and refer to it by other names – Wendigo, Witigo, Witiko, and Wee-Tee-Go – but each version roughly translates to mean the evil spirit that devours humanity. Around 1860, a German explorer translated Wendigo as a cannibal.

That is one of many tales about wendigos. Some say that the Wendigo is a rare breed of magical creature. They are believed nearly extinct, with the creature's population dropping significantly as more wendigos have been hunted down throughout the centuries. Or went into hiding rumors saying that the window goes breed with humans or other creatures to avoid the thinning of their population entirely dying out. The drop in Wendigopopulace can also be accounted to hunters, who hunt Wendigo for their blood and organs.

Wendigo has been classed as dark or evil creatures since the eighteen-forties by the British, Americans, Asians, and Europeans. It has consequently been deemed a dangerous threat to civilized society. Due to their unique abilities that constantly mutate or evolve throughout the generations, wendigos have enhanced strength and speed. It can imitate human voices to lure in its victims, which it traps and keeps alive for long periods to feed from them.

There are rumored to be less than a hundred living Wendigos worldwide. However, it is unclear if this number is accurate as Wendigos have become adept at hiding their defining characteristics, making it easier for them to blend in with human beings.

'Interesting. Lilith wonders if there are any wendigos around this area. Surely, But the markings are different. Am I half wendigo and half werewolf, a hybrid? Am I the only one out in this world? But then again, if there are so few worldwide...' Lilith shook off those morbid thoughts and turned back to the book.

Wendigos were once humans who were forced to consume human flesh to survive. When a human consumes the flesh of another person, they can become imbued with new strength and abilities. Over the years, the continued consumption of meat will eventually make a person less and less human until they become an emaciated husk of what they were, driven by a never-ending hunger.

A wendigo will typically hibernate for years at a time, but when they are awake, they are known to keep their victims alive to feed on at their leisure.

Powers and abilities

Claws – A wendigo has long claws that they use to slash its prey.

Enhanced senses – Wendigos have enhanced senses of smell, hearing, and the ability to hunt in complete darkness.

Immortality – With the continued consumption of human flesh and their ability to hibernate, a wendigo can theoretically live forever.

Superhuman strength and speed – The consumption of human flesh gives a wendigo the ability to tear humans limb from limb and incredible speed, making them incredibly stealth hunters.

Voice mimicry – Wendigos can imitate human voices to lure prey.

Weaknesses

Anasazi symbols – A protective circle of Anasazi symbols can keep a wendigo at bay.

Fire – Burning a wendigo is the only known way to kill one effectively.

Silver – Silver-tipped bows and arrows can injure a wendigo, but they are ineffective in killing one.

Lilith closed the book, having read the small section several times. She swallowed heavily and placed the book down with her quivering hands. She now had so many questions and absolutely no way to find the answers and no one she could ask about. Only one person might have the answers, but Lilith was scared to confront Nathan since the alpha was utterly unknown. But you needed to do this. She needs to know what's going on. With a nod of her head, Lilith left her father's office and headed out the back door of her home, transforming into her snow-white wolf form and running towards the school where she last met or saw Nathan.

Once after school, Lilith allowed her wolf instincts to guide her as she took in the sense of everyone or anything around the perimeter. When she picked up the scent of the unknown Alpha, better known as Nathan, she quickly followed the scent Trail. Lilith found Nathan, who looked at her, still in her wolf form. Nathan signaled for her to follow. As he turned into his wolf form, what shocked Lilith was that Nathan’s wolf was much more giant than the average werewolf. In his wolf form, looking like a dire wolf, Nathan and Lilith made their way deeper into the woods behind the school.

Once they get deeper into the forest, they both transform back to their human forms as Lilith swallows her nerves and says, “You're Impossibly fast and strong…You undoubtedly have the same markings as mine on your upper back and arms. Your eyes glow a crimson color which is not normal for werewolves, and I know that for a fact since I used to have teal eyes, and now I have emerald green; they sometimes have dots of Amber in them. You have incredible strength, speed, and Power.

But I know that there is a special diet that you're eating…." Lilith turned to him. "How long have you been a hybrid?" asked Lilith. Nathan just chuckled and looked at Lilith and her his back story, and he found out that his mother was having an affair with a windigo when she married his father. How he triggered his other inheritance, leading his father to know the truth about his mother's infidelity. Which sent his stepfather into a rage as he hunted down and killed his biological father and his whole family. But that wasn’t the last of it. Nathan’s stepfather ordered his mother to seal the way his wendigo side away before being banished from the pack, to never renter.
