Chapter 2

Author: Nameless
"Wendy, don't be like this. I know you're devastated, but you have to face the truth. Mrs. Levine's… She told me just two days ago that she was going to the church to pray for you. There's no way she could be in Malthia," Yara said.

Sean glared at me. "Did you hear that? Even Yara knew Dahlia was going to the church! How could you not even know where she is?

"You're her daughter! Now that she's gone, you pull out some random old photo just to upset me?"

I was shaking with rage. I pulled up the details of the photo and shoved my phone in his face again.

"An old photo? Sean Quimby, open your damn eyes and look at this! It was sent 13 minutes ago! So tell me, what church do you know that's in the middle of the ocean?"

This time, all the color drained from Sean's face. He stared at the timestamp and location of the photo, his lips trembling, but not a single word came out.

I snatched my phone back and said coldly, "Sean, the woman who was hooded and strapped to that bomb was Kate. You blew your own mother to pieces."

Yara let out a snicker at the worst possible moment.

Still giggling, she pointed at me and said to Sean, who was too stunned to speak, "Sean, look at her! She's hilarious! She actually made up a lie like that just to get your attention!"

She wiped the tears from the corners of her eyes and said matter-of-factly, "Everyone knows Kate took the nine o'clock train home this morning. We had a team dinner yesterday, and she even called to remind you to come home early so you could see her off.

"How could she possibly have been here? Wendy, even if you want Sean to pay more attention to you, you can't joke about something like this!"

Her words immediately calmed Sean down. The panic and fear disappeared from his face. He let out a long breath of relief. Then, anger took over.

"Wendy!" he roared. "I can't believe I ever thought I knew you! I know you didn't like Yara. You think I've been neglecting you because I was training an intern!

"But do you really have to be that jealous? Do you have to stand here in front of everyone and make up such a vicious lie? You'd really go this far just to get my attention, even if it means jinxing my mother?"

His chest heaved as he pointed a trembling finger at me. "You've really disappointed me! Look at Yara. She just started working here, and she already knows to keep track of my mom's travel plans!

"And you? You're her daughter-in-law, yet you didn't even know when she was going home! And now you're standing here telling lies!"

I looked at them—a murderer and his accomplice.

They stood in front of the body they had just blown to pieces with their own hands, yet they had the nerve to accuse me of being jealous.

Suddenly, I realized that saying another word to them would be a waste of time.

I didn't bother answering. I turned around and headed straight toward the wreckage, where black smoke still billowed into the air.

"Stop right there! Where are you going?" Sean roared behind me. "Did you hear me? Apologize to Yara!"

I didn't even turn around.

Near the police cordon, my colleague, Charles Church, grabbed my arm. His face had gone deathly pale. "Wendy, don't go over there! The scene… It's too horrible. There's… There's no way to identify her anymore…"

I pulled his hand away. My gaze stayed fixed on the wreckage, and my voice left no room for argument. "That's my mother-in-law."

I looked toward the firefighters already rushing into the wreckage with fire extinguishers. "Go. Get me a body bag."

Before I could even get the body bag, Sean got there before me.

As I walked out of the courthouse, my phone vibrated incessantly. The unknown numbers who once sent me the most vicious insults and verbally attacked me were currently flooding my inbox with countless apology messages. The hashtag #WeAllOweWendyAnApology was at the top of the trending topics online.I scrolled expressionlessly through the list of messages without reading a single one.Just then, a familiar figure stepped out in front of me—Charles, my former colleague who had stopped me before the police cordon back then.He looked at me, red-faced and so overcome with guilt that he barely dared to lift his head. "Wendy, I'm sorry. We… We all misjudged you back then. I… I'm a terrible person."Seeing that he was on the verge of tears, I shook my head and said, "I don't blame you guys. You'd just been deceived."He exclaimed anxiously, "But we hurt you! If… If it'll make you feel better, feel free to yell at me!"As I looked at him, I suddenly smiled. "Charles, work hard, and us

I leaned forward, getting close to the cold glass between me and Selena, and said, "Selena Gibson, you must be mistaken. Did you think I was fighting you over Sean? For your information, I was just throwing out the trash—trash I've been itching to get rid of for ages, except I didn't want to get my hands dirty."I watched her eyes widen as I continued, "You went to great lengths just to snatch a heap of unwanted trash from me, even at the cost of dirtying your own hands. You call this a victory?"She shot out of her seat and glared at me. "That's nonsense!"I leaned back in my chair and gazed coldly at her. "Nonsense? You picked the world's most idiotic weapon for your revenge. You killed without even making sure you had the right target. "Although your father, Zander Gibson, was a monster, he was at least smart enough to pull off every move with unparalleled precision. But what about you?"I paused, then continued, "You fully inherited his viciousness but abandoned the smarts he

The mail bomb case had been my childhood nightmare. For an entire year, my family had lived in constant fear, and my father, Andrew Levine, had even received several threatening letters stained with blood.Pearce put away his phone with a grim expression. "Everything lines up, then. Yara Gibson never existed. Her real name is Selena Gibson, and she's Zander's biological daughter."My mind instantly went blank. All my previous rage, hatred, and agony at being betrayed had suddenly become a huge joke. This wasn't about marital bonds or adultery. It had never been about all that.I grabbed Pearce by the arm."So… So, her target had never been Sean. She was doing it for the sake of revenge! She was targeting my family because of Dad!"Pearce placed a settling hand over my cold ones. "Yes. Her goal is very clear."A thought abruptly occurred to me, and I stiffened, my blood turning to ice."That person she abducted on the day the bomb went off… She had never intended to kill my moth

The lighting in the cold interrogation room was harsh.Pearce walked out of the room and took off his headphones, looking a little tired."How did it go?" I asked. He replied, "One's gone mad and does nothing but cry out for his mother. The other one…"He paused, a hint of perplexity flashing through his gaze, before continuing, "The other one's as stubborn as a mule. She insists that Sean instigated her and coerced her into committing the crime. She claims that she was just a poor intern blinded by love."Aside from that recording, we have no direct evidence to prove that she orchestrated the murder."I was utterly unsurprised.A person like Yara would always leave themselves a way out. People like her often played damsels in distress, clinging onto other men, only to use them as scapegoats when things became hairy.I looked at Pearce and said calmly, "She's not some pitiful woman but a professional."We walked into an empty office, where he handed me a glass of warm water.

I said into the phone, "The murderers are Sean Quimby and Yara Gibson. The victim is Sean's mother, Kate Irwin. Sean's currently downstairs in my house and has gone insane. Please come and arrest him."Pearce Linwood arrived in the middle of the chaos, wearing dark blue tactical gear. He stood straight and tall, and he looked perfectly composed. The squad members behind him acted quickly and efficiently, swiftly cordoning off the area despite the chaotic crowd and keeping the media out.His gaze cut through the hysterical Sean and the panicking reports to land squarely on me.I gave him a light nod.We communicated all that needed to be said without words. Then, a piercing scream drowned out Sean's mournful wails.Yara scrambled toward Pearce with a deathly pale face. "No! It's not like that! It's not! Mr. Linwood, don't listen to her! Wendy's… She's become mentally unstable due to severe mental trauma caused by Mrs. Quimby's death! She was also the one who drove Sean mad! This

The live stream cameras captured every second of the absurd scene.Seconds ago, the heroic son-in-law had been mourning his mother-in-law's death. Now, the very woman he had just mourned was standing in front of the cameras, alive and well, carrying a container of chicken pot pie.The color drained from Sean's face. He stared at Mom's face in disbelief, clearly seeing her alive and well, as his eyes widened in shock. Then, a horrifying thought struck him like a bolt of lightning. If that woman wasn't my mother… Then who was the woman in the hood who had been blown to pieces that morning?"Mom…" A faint, strangled sound escaped Sean's throat. He wasn't calling out to Mom.The blood drained from his face. His handsome features twisted in horror as his muscles began to spasms uncontrollably. He suddenly staggered backward, nearing losing his balance. "No… No, that's impossible…"He muttered under his breath, his eyes unfocused as he shook his head again and again, "She was… at t
