Chapter 3

Author: Nameless
Sean had no intention of following proper procedure. Instead, he used his authority as team leader and the chaos at the scene to take control, claiming that "the victim's family was too emotionally distraught to endure any further trauma".

He ordered his trusted men to clear the scene as quickly as possible. They gathered the mangled remains, sealed them up, and sent them straight to the funeral home, making sure I never got the chance to see them.

Several of his closest friends stopped me at the police cordon. All I could do was stand there and watch as the black vehicle sped away.

I knew exactly what he was trying to do. He wanted to muddy the waters until no one could tell what had really happened.

That evening, Efton Police Department posted a brief statement on its official account. It announced that the operation had failed and mentioned that a family member had become emotionally distressed at the scene and was receiving psychological counseling.

The statement was all the opening he needed.

Less than an hour later, Sean posted a lengthy statement on his personal social media account.

He rarely posted, but his profile featured photos from his everyday life, the honors he'd received, and our wedding photos. His account was verified under the name "Sean Quimby, Team Leader of Efton's Criminal Investigation Division".

The post was titled, "I Owe Everyone an Apology, Especially My Broken Family."

He wasn't wearing his uniform. Instead, he posted a selfie he'd taken in his office. His eyes were bloodshot, and his face was etched with exhaustion and pain.

In the post, he used carefully chosen, deeply emotional words to cast himself as a tragic hero who had endured everything in silence.

First, he apologized to everyone for the failed operation and took full responsibility.

Then, he changed course.

In heartbreaking detail, he described how my mother had died right in front of him. He wrote about his helplessness and devastation as if he wanted every reader to feel his pain.

But the most devastating part came next. He began to confess his "regrets".

He claimed that he'd been so consumed by work that he'd neglected his family. He hadn't done enough to ease the tension between me and Kate, and he'd failed to notice how badly I was struggling. That, he claimed, was why I'd become so distraught that I started insisting the person who died was Kate.

"When this tragedy happened, I could understand why Wendy broke down."

He wrote, "Wendy couldn't accept what happened, so she directed all her pain and resentment at me—even at my innocent intern, Yara.

"Wendy started saying things that made no sense and accusing people of things that never happened. Watching her go through this broke my heart. This was my fault. I failed to protect her and let her suffer through all of this."

Then, as the finishing touch, he portrayed Yara as a kindhearted young woman who had been unfairly dragged into the situation. "Please leave her alone. Yara's still just a kid. I'll take responsibility for everything."

It was a perfectly calculated one-two punch.

Not long after, Yara reposted his statement from a private account, adding just one sentence, "I'm sorry, Wendy. I'm sorry, Mr. Quimby. This is all my fault…"

She finished it with a crying emoji.

Public opinion turned against me in an instant.

"Bomb-Squad Hero Loses Mother-in-Law While Protecting Intern."

"Hero's Wife Suspected of Mental Breakdown."

"Poor Yara Gibson."

The headlines kept coming, each one more viscous than the last.

People dug up my social media accounts and phone number. Thousands upon thousands of hateful messages and comments flooded in like a tidal wave, completely overwhelming me. "You crazy woman! Your husband is out there risking his life while you sit at home causing trouble!"

"You didn't get along with your mother-in-law? No, you're just cold-blooded and ungrateful! Your own mother dies and you don't even cry, yet you have the nerve to attack other people?"

"Poor Yara! You've practically pushed that poor girl to her breaking point!"

"Mr. Quimby has to be the unluckiest man alive to have married a woman like you! Just divorce him already. He deserves better!"

With one carefully crafted post and a few crocodile tears, Sean and Yara had successfully branded me as a cruel, unstable woman in the eyes of the entire world.

And I didn't even get the chance to defend myself.

The online outrage continued to spread.

As I walked out of the courthouse, my phone vibrated incessantly. The unknown numbers who once sent me the most vicious insults and verbally attacked me were currently flooding my inbox with countless apology messages. The hashtag #WeAllOweWendyAnApology was at the top of the trending topics online.I scrolled expressionlessly through the list of messages without reading a single one.Just then, a familiar figure stepped out in front of me—Charles, my former colleague who had stopped me before the police cordon back then.He looked at me, red-faced and so overcome with guilt that he barely dared to lift his head. "Wendy, I'm sorry. We… We all misjudged you back then. I… I'm a terrible person."Seeing that he was on the verge of tears, I shook my head and said, "I don't blame you guys. You'd just been deceived."He exclaimed anxiously, "But we hurt you! If… If it'll make you feel better, feel free to yell at me!"As I looked at him, I suddenly smiled. "Charles, work hard, and us

I leaned forward, getting close to the cold glass between me and Selena, and said, "Selena Gibson, you must be mistaken. Did you think I was fighting you over Sean? For your information, I was just throwing out the trash—trash I've been itching to get rid of for ages, except I didn't want to get my hands dirty."I watched her eyes widen as I continued, "You went to great lengths just to snatch a heap of unwanted trash from me, even at the cost of dirtying your own hands. You call this a victory?"She shot out of her seat and glared at me. "That's nonsense!"I leaned back in my chair and gazed coldly at her. "Nonsense? You picked the world's most idiotic weapon for your revenge. You killed without even making sure you had the right target. "Although your father, Zander Gibson, was a monster, he was at least smart enough to pull off every move with unparalleled precision. But what about you?"I paused, then continued, "You fully inherited his viciousness but abandoned the smarts he

The mail bomb case had been my childhood nightmare. For an entire year, my family had lived in constant fear, and my father, Andrew Levine, had even received several threatening letters stained with blood.Pearce put away his phone with a grim expression. "Everything lines up, then. Yara Gibson never existed. Her real name is Selena Gibson, and she's Zander's biological daughter."My mind instantly went blank. All my previous rage, hatred, and agony at being betrayed had suddenly become a huge joke. This wasn't about marital bonds or adultery. It had never been about all that.I grabbed Pearce by the arm."So… So, her target had never been Sean. She was doing it for the sake of revenge! She was targeting my family because of Dad!"Pearce placed a settling hand over my cold ones. "Yes. Her goal is very clear."A thought abruptly occurred to me, and I stiffened, my blood turning to ice."That person she abducted on the day the bomb went off… She had never intended to kill my moth

The lighting in the cold interrogation room was harsh.Pearce walked out of the room and took off his headphones, looking a little tired."How did it go?" I asked. He replied, "One's gone mad and does nothing but cry out for his mother. The other one…"He paused, a hint of perplexity flashing through his gaze, before continuing, "The other one's as stubborn as a mule. She insists that Sean instigated her and coerced her into committing the crime. She claims that she was just a poor intern blinded by love."Aside from that recording, we have no direct evidence to prove that she orchestrated the murder."I was utterly unsurprised.A person like Yara would always leave themselves a way out. People like her often played damsels in distress, clinging onto other men, only to use them as scapegoats when things became hairy.I looked at Pearce and said calmly, "She's not some pitiful woman but a professional."We walked into an empty office, where he handed me a glass of warm water.

I said into the phone, "The murderers are Sean Quimby and Yara Gibson. The victim is Sean's mother, Kate Irwin. Sean's currently downstairs in my house and has gone insane. Please come and arrest him."Pearce Linwood arrived in the middle of the chaos, wearing dark blue tactical gear. He stood straight and tall, and he looked perfectly composed. The squad members behind him acted quickly and efficiently, swiftly cordoning off the area despite the chaotic crowd and keeping the media out.His gaze cut through the hysterical Sean and the panicking reports to land squarely on me.I gave him a light nod.We communicated all that needed to be said without words. Then, a piercing scream drowned out Sean's mournful wails.Yara scrambled toward Pearce with a deathly pale face. "No! It's not like that! It's not! Mr. Linwood, don't listen to her! Wendy's… She's become mentally unstable due to severe mental trauma caused by Mrs. Quimby's death! She was also the one who drove Sean mad! This

The live stream cameras captured every second of the absurd scene.Seconds ago, the heroic son-in-law had been mourning his mother-in-law's death. Now, the very woman he had just mourned was standing in front of the cameras, alive and well, carrying a container of chicken pot pie.The color drained from Sean's face. He stared at Mom's face in disbelief, clearly seeing her alive and well, as his eyes widened in shock. Then, a horrifying thought struck him like a bolt of lightning. If that woman wasn't my mother… Then who was the woman in the hood who had been blown to pieces that morning?"Mom…" A faint, strangled sound escaped Sean's throat. He wasn't calling out to Mom.The blood drained from his face. His handsome features twisted in horror as his muscles began to spasms uncontrollably. He suddenly staggered backward, nearing losing his balance. "No… No, that's impossible…"He muttered under his breath, his eyes unfocused as he shook his head again and again, "She was… at t
