Chapter 4

Author: Nameless
I had become the most hated woman in the country. Every time I refreshed my feed, the hateful comments seemed to multiply exponentially.

My phone wouldn't stop ringing. A mob of self-righteous strangers, whipped into a frenzy by the rumors online, had even gathered outside my home, pointing at my windows and shouting.

I pulled every curtain shut, cutting myself off from this world of hatred.

The moment Sean chose to sacrifice Kate to protect Yara, I knew there was no turning back.

He wanted to drive me insane. He wanted everyone to believe I had lost my mind. That way, Kate's death could forever be written off as an accident. And he got to play the tragic hero who had endured it all.

What a slick way to escape responsibility.

…

That afternoon, just when public opinion had turned completely against me, my doorbell rang.

I peered through the peephole, and my heart sank.

Sean stood outside my home, surrounded by reporters with cameras and influencers live-streaming on their phones.

He wasn't wearing his uniform. He had nothing on but a thin shirt, his hair disheveled and dark circles under his eyes. He looked exhausted, devastated, and completely heartbroken.

He yelled outside my house until his voice turned hoarse, "Wendy! Open the door! I know you're in there!

"I know you're in pain! I know you hate me! But you can't keep doing this to yourself! We still have Dahlia's funeral to take care of. Please, just come out and see me. Just once!"

Every camera turned to his anguished face.

One influencer aimed his phone at Sean and spoke to his live stream audience in a sympathetic tone, "Guys, look at this. Mr. Quimby is really going through so much right now.

"His mother-in-law just died, and his wife has locked herself inside the house and refuses to see anyone. She's even been lashing out at him. He can't even go home."

Another reporter called out over the crowd, "Mr. Quimby, what's Ms. Wendy Levine's condition right now? Has she come to terms with her mother's death?"

Sean closed his eyes, his expression in pain, and slowly shook his head. "She doesn't believe it… She refuses to believe it. She keeps saying that the woman wasn't her mother. I just… I don't know what to do anymore."

He turned toward the cameras, as if he were making his case to the entire country. Tears glistened in his eyes. "Dahlia hasn't even been laid to rest yet! And Wendy… She hasn't shed a single tear. Not one.

"She hasn't shown the slightest bit of grief. All she does is attack me and Yara, saying things that make absolutely no sense…"

He looked up at my window. "Please, Wendy! Come to your senses. Please!"

He was putting on one hell of a performance.

The live stream chat exploded. Comment after comment flooded the screen, all of them cursing me as a cold-blooded, crazy woman while showering Sean with sympathy.

Just as everyone was completely swept up in the heartbreaking scene Sean had put on, a woman in a floral dress suddenly pushed her way through the crowd.

She was carrying an insulated food container. "Hey, excuse me! Move aside! What are you all doing here? Why are you blocking my front door?" her voice rang out loud and clear.

The entire crowd fell silent, as if someone had hit pause. For a few seconds, an eerie silence hung over the scene.

Everyone turned toward the voice.

Through the peephole, I finally got a clear look at her face.

It was Mom. She stood there, staring at the crowd in complete confusion, still holding the food container.

"Sean? What are you doing here? I told you I'd be flying home this afternoon!

"Where's Wendy? I made her some chicken pot pie. She's probably not eating properly again, is she?"

As I walked out of the courthouse, my phone vibrated incessantly. The unknown numbers who once sent me the most vicious insults and verbally attacked me were currently flooding my inbox with countless apology messages. The hashtag #WeAllOweWendyAnApology was at the top of the trending topics online.I scrolled expressionlessly through the list of messages without reading a single one.Just then, a familiar figure stepped out in front of me—Charles, my former colleague who had stopped me before the police cordon back then.He looked at me, red-faced and so overcome with guilt that he barely dared to lift his head. "Wendy, I'm sorry. We… We all misjudged you back then. I… I'm a terrible person."Seeing that he was on the verge of tears, I shook my head and said, "I don't blame you guys. You'd just been deceived."He exclaimed anxiously, "But we hurt you! If… If it'll make you feel better, feel free to yell at me!"As I looked at him, I suddenly smiled. "Charles, work hard, and us

I leaned forward, getting close to the cold glass between me and Selena, and said, "Selena Gibson, you must be mistaken. Did you think I was fighting you over Sean? For your information, I was just throwing out the trash—trash I've been itching to get rid of for ages, except I didn't want to get my hands dirty."I watched her eyes widen as I continued, "You went to great lengths just to snatch a heap of unwanted trash from me, even at the cost of dirtying your own hands. You call this a victory?"She shot out of her seat and glared at me. "That's nonsense!"I leaned back in my chair and gazed coldly at her. "Nonsense? You picked the world's most idiotic weapon for your revenge. You killed without even making sure you had the right target. "Although your father, Zander Gibson, was a monster, he was at least smart enough to pull off every move with unparalleled precision. But what about you?"I paused, then continued, "You fully inherited his viciousness but abandoned the smarts he

The mail bomb case had been my childhood nightmare. For an entire year, my family had lived in constant fear, and my father, Andrew Levine, had even received several threatening letters stained with blood.Pearce put away his phone with a grim expression. "Everything lines up, then. Yara Gibson never existed. Her real name is Selena Gibson, and she's Zander's biological daughter."My mind instantly went blank. All my previous rage, hatred, and agony at being betrayed had suddenly become a huge joke. This wasn't about marital bonds or adultery. It had never been about all that.I grabbed Pearce by the arm."So… So, her target had never been Sean. She was doing it for the sake of revenge! She was targeting my family because of Dad!"Pearce placed a settling hand over my cold ones. "Yes. Her goal is very clear."A thought abruptly occurred to me, and I stiffened, my blood turning to ice."That person she abducted on the day the bomb went off… She had never intended to kill my moth

The lighting in the cold interrogation room was harsh.Pearce walked out of the room and took off his headphones, looking a little tired."How did it go?" I asked. He replied, "One's gone mad and does nothing but cry out for his mother. The other one…"He paused, a hint of perplexity flashing through his gaze, before continuing, "The other one's as stubborn as a mule. She insists that Sean instigated her and coerced her into committing the crime. She claims that she was just a poor intern blinded by love."Aside from that recording, we have no direct evidence to prove that she orchestrated the murder."I was utterly unsurprised.A person like Yara would always leave themselves a way out. People like her often played damsels in distress, clinging onto other men, only to use them as scapegoats when things became hairy.I looked at Pearce and said calmly, "She's not some pitiful woman but a professional."We walked into an empty office, where he handed me a glass of warm water.

I said into the phone, "The murderers are Sean Quimby and Yara Gibson. The victim is Sean's mother, Kate Irwin. Sean's currently downstairs in my house and has gone insane. Please come and arrest him."Pearce Linwood arrived in the middle of the chaos, wearing dark blue tactical gear. He stood straight and tall, and he looked perfectly composed. The squad members behind him acted quickly and efficiently, swiftly cordoning off the area despite the chaotic crowd and keeping the media out.His gaze cut through the hysterical Sean and the panicking reports to land squarely on me.I gave him a light nod.We communicated all that needed to be said without words. Then, a piercing scream drowned out Sean's mournful wails.Yara scrambled toward Pearce with a deathly pale face. "No! It's not like that! It's not! Mr. Linwood, don't listen to her! Wendy's… She's become mentally unstable due to severe mental trauma caused by Mrs. Quimby's death! She was also the one who drove Sean mad! This

The live stream cameras captured every second of the absurd scene.Seconds ago, the heroic son-in-law had been mourning his mother-in-law's death. Now, the very woman he had just mourned was standing in front of the cameras, alive and well, carrying a container of chicken pot pie.The color drained from Sean's face. He stared at Mom's face in disbelief, clearly seeing her alive and well, as his eyes widened in shock. Then, a horrifying thought struck him like a bolt of lightning. If that woman wasn't my mother… Then who was the woman in the hood who had been blown to pieces that morning?"Mom…" A faint, strangled sound escaped Sean's throat. He wasn't calling out to Mom.The blood drained from his face. His handsome features twisted in horror as his muscles began to spasms uncontrollably. He suddenly staggered backward, nearing losing his balance. "No… No, that's impossible…"He muttered under his breath, his eyes unfocused as he shook his head again and again, "She was… at t
