Chapter 1

My lawyer, Everett Preston, replied in no time. "I can have the agreement drafted by tonight. You should prepare in advance to fight for your son's custody. Gather and organize all your chat histories from over the years."

I had just saved the screenshots when Celeste Rochester pushed open the door and walked in. She was still wearing the light blue matching family dress from the live broadcast, with a smudge of cream on her sleeve.

Jonah Bellamy trailed behind her, holding Iris Bellamy's hand. "Is there anything left to eat at home? Iris has been complaining about being hungry ever since the event ended."

Celeste draped her bag over the back of a chair and ordered me around as usual. "Make us a plate of spaghetti. Go easy on the basil. Iris doesn't eat it."

I didn't budge.

Kevin poked his head out from behind me, clutching his drawing, which had been torn in half. "Mommy, why didn't you show up to watch my performance?"

It hit Celeste that he was still wearing his costume. She paused for a beat before bending down to stroke his head. "Something came up at the last minute. I'll show up next time."

Kevin dodged her hand. "My teacher said today's the final performance."

"I can watch the video later. It's the same thing," she said casually before pulling a golden medal out of her pocket. "Look, I brought you a gift."

Kevin's eyes lit up. Yet, the moment he took the medal, his smile instantly vanished. Iris' name was engraved on the back of the medal.

Jonah immediately appeared contrite. "Oh dear, you took the wrong one, Celeste. That's the medal Iris won at her family day competition."

Celeste frowned and took the medal from Kevin's hands. "Since it's Iris', give it back to her. Be a good boy, Kevin. I'll buy you a new one next time."

Kevin remained frozen in place. His hands were still held out as though he were holding something.

After what felt like an eternity, he withdrew his hands. "But you used to say that you have to earn a medal on your own, Mommy. It doesn't count if you buy it."

Celeste's expression stiffened slightly.

Iris had already snatched the medal and hung it around her neck. She tilted her head back and made a face at Kevin. "Celeste did the relay with me today, and we came in first place!"

Kevin lowered his head and crumpled the ripped drawing in his fists.

I stepped in front of him. "We ran out of spaghetti. So, you should eat out."

Celeste's expression darkened. "Kai Heathcliff, the kids are right here. Do you really have to behave like this?"

Jonah hurriedly stopped her. "Forget it. Kai's still upset. Iris and I'll head home. Even though the water's shut off at our place, we can tough it out for one night."

"How are you supposed to stay there without running water?" Celeste pinched the bridge of her nose. "Our guest room is unoccupied. You two can stay here tonight."

I looked up at her. "That won't be appropriate."

"Why? It's not like we don't have enough room." Celeste glanced at Kevin and softened her tone. "I was wrong not to attend his performance. I'll play with him later. Jonah's only staying for one night. Don't make things difficult for him."

Kevin suddenly tugged at the hem of my shirt. "Daddy, I want to go to bed."

I took his hand and led him toward his bedroom.

Iris spotted the little cape on his headboard. She broke from Jonah's grasp and ran inside. "This is pretty. I want to wear it!"

It was a souvenir that the teacher had given to every child after the performance ended.

Kevin finally lost his composure and reached out to grab it. "That's mine!"

Iris hid the cape behind her back. "Celeste said good things are meant to be shared!"

As the two children tugged back and forth, the cape ripped down the middle. Kevin was caught off guard.

Celeste walked over and immediately shielded Iris behind her. "It's just a cheap piece of fabric. I'll get you a new one since it's ruined."

Kevin looked up at her, tears brimming in his eyes. "This is the second time you've given my things to her today, Mommy."

Celeste parted her lips, but she was at a loss for words.

Kevin lowered his head and hugged the ripped drawing tightly against his chest, as if it was the only thing he had left to prove that Celeste had once belonged to him and his father.

When Kevin walked in, holding Dad's hand, Celeste instinctively stood up. Kevin came to a halt when he saw her. This time, he didn't tremble or hide. He merely looked at her quietly. Celeste crouched down, her eyes misting over. "I'll leave as soon as I sign this, Kevin."He looked down at the agreement on the table. "Does that mean you're not my mommy anymore?" "I still am." She parted her lips. "If you want me to be, I'll always be your mommy." Kevin thought for a while. "Will you still be borrowed by someone else?" Tears streamed down her face. "No, I won't." However, he shook his head. "But I don't want to wait for you anymore." "I can wait.""For how long?""For as long as it takes."Kevin didn't answer. He simply pushed the damaged drawing toward Celeste. "You can have this." Celeste's hands trembled violently. "Do you not want it anymore?""My teacher asked me to draw a new one," he said softly. "My new drawing has Daddy, Grandpa, Grandma, and me." There w

Celeste watched the video three times. "If I call her Mommy, will she live with us?" Iris asked in the footage.Jonah smiled as he helped her put on their matching outfits. "As long as everyone thinks we're one big family, she won't have the heart to abandon you." When the video ended, her fingers unconsciously tightened around her phone. "Who sent this?" "Jonah's ex-wife," Mr. Preston answered. "While applying to modify the custody arrangement, she came across the event footage uploaded by the kindergarten." Celeste immediately dialed Jonah's number. "Why did you list me as Iris' stepmother on the registration form?"He was silent for a couple of seconds before he let out a derisive chuckle. "I just didn't want the school to look down on a child from a single-parent family." "What about that video?" "Iris wanted a mother. I was just comforting her." "So, you deliberately had her call me Mommy on the live broadcast?" Jonah's facade crumbled. It was as if he was done p

The following day, Celeste sent me three messages.Celeste: "Jonah had a bout of low blood sugar, but he's fine now. Iris was all alone at the hospital last night, and I couldn't leave a child alone there. Kai, this was an exceptional circumstance."I forwarded all three messages to Mr. Preston. "Include these in the evidence."After reading them, Mr. Preston shook his head. "She really does find a way to prove you're right to divorce her every single time." On the day of the mediation, Celeste arrived half an hour late. Her clothes were slightly wrinkled, and dark circles shadowed her eyes. The first thing she said after sitting down was, "I don't agree to the divorce." I placed the records I'd compiled on the table. 37 phone calls. 21 times she'd left at the last minute. Seven times she'd missed Kevin's important events. Right at the top was the proof of her deleting the kindergarten's surveillance footage. Looking at the thick stack of papers, Celeste's expression har

On the third day after we moved, Celeste showed up with a box of things. The moment the door opened, she pushed the box toward me. "I brought all of Kevin's picture books, clothes, and the nightlights from his bedside."I looked through the box without inviting her inside. "Thank you." My polite response made her stiffen. "Do we really have to talk to each other like this?" "How else should we talk, Ms. Rochester?" Celeste gazed at me for a long while. "I've already told Jonah not to contact me again." "That's your business." "You used to mind it so much." "That was then. This is now." Kevin's voice drifted out from inside as he talked to Dad. Celeste instinctively peered inside. "How's he doing today?" "His follow-up results are good." "Can I see him?" "I asked him. He doesn't want to see you." Her fingers brushed against the edge of the box, and she rasped out, "I bought him a new performance outfit. His teacher said there's another performance next month. I'

Celeste's grip slowly loosened. She stood outside the door, watching Kevin bury his face in my arms. "I won't come in."His voice trembled. "Close the door, Daddy."I closed the hospital room door in her face. I noticed that she still hadn't left through the glass.…That afternoon, my mother-in-law, Maya Smith, arrived at the hospital. However, her very first words were, "Jonah called me. He told me you're pressing charges against Iris."I tucked Kevin in. "She locked Kevin in the prop room. She should apologize and be taught a lesson." Maya lowered her voice. "What does a five-year-old child know? Besides, Kevin's fine, isn't he?" I looked at her. "Who told you he was fine?" "Celeste told me. She told me he was just a little frightened. He'd be fine after getting some oxygen." Just then, the doctor walked in and corrected her coldly. "The patient suffered an acute asthma attack. If he'd been deprived of oxygen for any longer, the consequences could've been unimaginable.

The third strike brought the lock down with a loud crack. I rushed inside and pulled back the fallen curtains. Kevin was curled up in the corner. His little face was as pale as a sheet."Look at me, Kevin!"He couldn't open his eyes, and he only managed to grip one of my fingers. When the ambulance arrived, the paramedics immediately strapped an oxygen mask onto him. Celeste tried to get into the vehicle, but I raised my hand to stop her. "Don't touch him!" "Now's not the time to act out of spite, Kai.""When you deleted the surveillance footage, did you ever consider that he might die inside?" All the color drained from her lips. Jonah ran over with Iris in his arms. "Don't leave just yet, Celeste. The principal said she's calling the cops. Iris is just a child. We can't let this go on her record!"Celeste took a look at the ambulance before shifting her gaze toward him. That single glance was all it took. I slammed the ambulance door shut. By the time we reached the
