Chapter 2

Author: Forest Isle
Jonah hastily bent down to comfort Kevin. "Dry your tears, Kevin. We can always buy you another cape. I see your drawing is torn, too. How about I help you tape it back together?"

Right after saying that, he reached out and took the two halves of the drawing from Kevin's arms. Kevin lunged forward to snatch them back.

Jonah's grip loosened, and the two halves of the drawing fell into the burning-scented candle on the edge of the table. In an instant, the flames caught the corners of the paper.

By the time I put out the fire with my bare hands, a billow of thick smoke had caused Kevin to burst into a coughing fit. He had sensitive airways and mild asthma. He couldn't put up with this.

One of the three figures in the drawing had already been burned away. Kevin stared at what was left of the drawing and burst into tears. "Daddy… Mommy's gone!"

Jonah hastily grabbed some tissues and handed them to him. "I'm so sorry. It was an accident. Why don't you draw another one, Kevin?"

I swatted his hand away. "Get out."

Celeste handed Iris to Jonah and said in a low voice, "Take her to the guest room first. I need to have a word with Kai."

The moment the bedroom door shut behind us, she seized my wrist. "That's enough. Jonah has apologized."

I wrenched my arm out of her grasp. "Can't you see that our son is crying?"

"So what if he cries for a little while?" she blurted out before lowering her voice. "Jonah has been emotionally unstable ever since his divorce. What if you upset him by throwing him out in front of Iris?"

I gazed at her for a while before inquiring, "What about Kevin?"

"He has both his parents by his side. He's grown up with everything he could ever need." Celeste paused for a moment before adding, "Stop coddling him so much. If he makes a fuss over a drawing and a cape, how's he going to get along with other people in the future?"

Kevin's cries ground to a halt in the bedroom. I turned around and found him behind the door.

He lowered his head, folded the damaged drawing, and tucked it into the pocket of his costume. "I won't make a fuss ever again, Daddy."

Celeste looked visibly awkward as she reached out to pull him into a hug. Kevin took a step back and closed the door in her face.

…

The following day, I received a call from the kindergarten. The teacher informed me that Kevin had locked himself in the bathroom. He'd been bawling his eyes out for hours, and he refused to come out.

There was no time for questions. I dropped everything and sped to the kindergarten.

I had just reached the office door when I overheard two teachers' conversation.

"I saw the live broadcast, too. Iris's dad and Ms. Rochester looked like one big happy family."

"But isn't Ms. Rochester Kevin's mother?"

"Iris has been going around telling everyone that she's her mother, too. A few kids even made fun of Kevin, telling him his mother likes Iris more than him."

When I pushed open the door, Kevin was already in the office. The moment he saw me, he ran over and clutched my hand.

The teachers hurriedly broke off their conversation.

"My apologies, Mr. Heathcliff. The children don't know any better. We've already reprimanded them."

I crouched down and asked Kevin, "Did anyone pick on you?" He shook his head.

His teacher, however, hesitated before pulling out a sheet of drawing paper. It showed a woman in business attire holding Iris' hand with one hand while pushing Kevin away with the other.

"One of the kids in class drew this. When Kevin saw it, he locked himself in the bathroom and refused to come out."

My chest felt tight, as if something were lodged in it. Before I could utter a word, Celeste walked in with Jonah.

Jonah looked remorseful. "The live broadcast incident is a misunderstanding, ma'am. Iris has been deprived of her mother's love since she was little, so she got into the habit of calling Celeste that."

Celeste picked up where he left off. "It's just a minor conflict between children. There's no need to blow this out of proportion."

I handed her the drawing. "Your son's being mocked by his entire class for not having a mother, and you call that a minor conflict?"

Celeste took one look at it and knitted her brows. "I'll talk to Kevin."

Iris ran out from behind Jonah and took her hand. "My teacher said I'm not allowed to call you that anymore, Celeste."

Celeste crouched down. "That's not what your teacher meant."

"In that case, can I still call you that?" Iris looked up at her expectantly.

Jonah tried to reason with her quietly. "Forget it. Let's not upset Kevin. Iris, from now on, call her Ms. Rochester."

Iris immediately burst into tears. "I don't want to call you Ms. Rochester. I want you to be my mommy!"

The parents nearby all turned to look.

Celeste felt put on the spot, so she turned to Kevin. "Iris only calls me that in private; she's not going to steal me away from you. You're older than her, so you should let her have her way."

Kevin gaped at her. "But I'm only three months older than her."

Her expression hardened. "Even one day makes you the older one. Stop being so immature!"

As soon as her words fell, her phone rang. The principal posted an announcement in the group chat. "Ms. Rochester, to avoid any confusion, please let us know which child you'll be attending tomorrow's Mother's Day event with."

Iris snatched her phone and pressed the voice message button. "Of course, she's coming to be with me!"

The moment the voice message was sent, Celeste didn't delete it. If anything, she gave her answer right in front of the teachers. "I'll be attending tomorrow's open class with Iris."

When Kevin walked in, holding Dad's hand, Celeste instinctively stood up. Kevin came to a halt when he saw her. This time, he didn't tremble or hide. He merely looked at her quietly. Celeste crouched down, her eyes misting over. "I'll leave as soon as I sign this, Kevin."He looked down at the agreement on the table. "Does that mean you're not my mommy anymore?" "I still am." She parted her lips. "If you want me to be, I'll always be your mommy." Kevin thought for a while. "Will you still be borrowed by someone else?" Tears streamed down her face. "No, I won't." However, he shook his head. "But I don't want to wait for you anymore." "I can wait.""For how long?""For as long as it takes."Kevin didn't answer. He simply pushed the damaged drawing toward Celeste. "You can have this." Celeste's hands trembled violently. "Do you not want it anymore?""My teacher asked me to draw a new one," he said softly. "My new drawing has Daddy, Grandpa, Grandma, and me." There w

Celeste watched the video three times. "If I call her Mommy, will she live with us?" Iris asked in the footage.Jonah smiled as he helped her put on their matching outfits. "As long as everyone thinks we're one big family, she won't have the heart to abandon you." When the video ended, her fingers unconsciously tightened around her phone. "Who sent this?" "Jonah's ex-wife," Mr. Preston answered. "While applying to modify the custody arrangement, she came across the event footage uploaded by the kindergarten." Celeste immediately dialed Jonah's number. "Why did you list me as Iris' stepmother on the registration form?"He was silent for a couple of seconds before he let out a derisive chuckle. "I just didn't want the school to look down on a child from a single-parent family." "What about that video?" "Iris wanted a mother. I was just comforting her." "So, you deliberately had her call me Mommy on the live broadcast?" Jonah's facade crumbled. It was as if he was done p

The following day, Celeste sent me three messages.Celeste: "Jonah had a bout of low blood sugar, but he's fine now. Iris was all alone at the hospital last night, and I couldn't leave a child alone there. Kai, this was an exceptional circumstance."I forwarded all three messages to Mr. Preston. "Include these in the evidence."After reading them, Mr. Preston shook his head. "She really does find a way to prove you're right to divorce her every single time." On the day of the mediation, Celeste arrived half an hour late. Her clothes were slightly wrinkled, and dark circles shadowed her eyes. The first thing she said after sitting down was, "I don't agree to the divorce." I placed the records I'd compiled on the table. 37 phone calls. 21 times she'd left at the last minute. Seven times she'd missed Kevin's important events. Right at the top was the proof of her deleting the kindergarten's surveillance footage. Looking at the thick stack of papers, Celeste's expression har

On the third day after we moved, Celeste showed up with a box of things. The moment the door opened, she pushed the box toward me. "I brought all of Kevin's picture books, clothes, and the nightlights from his bedside."I looked through the box without inviting her inside. "Thank you." My polite response made her stiffen. "Do we really have to talk to each other like this?" "How else should we talk, Ms. Rochester?" Celeste gazed at me for a long while. "I've already told Jonah not to contact me again." "That's your business." "You used to mind it so much." "That was then. This is now." Kevin's voice drifted out from inside as he talked to Dad. Celeste instinctively peered inside. "How's he doing today?" "His follow-up results are good." "Can I see him?" "I asked him. He doesn't want to see you." Her fingers brushed against the edge of the box, and she rasped out, "I bought him a new performance outfit. His teacher said there's another performance next month. I'

Celeste's grip slowly loosened. She stood outside the door, watching Kevin bury his face in my arms. "I won't come in."His voice trembled. "Close the door, Daddy."I closed the hospital room door in her face. I noticed that she still hadn't left through the glass.…That afternoon, my mother-in-law, Maya Smith, arrived at the hospital. However, her very first words were, "Jonah called me. He told me you're pressing charges against Iris."I tucked Kevin in. "She locked Kevin in the prop room. She should apologize and be taught a lesson." Maya lowered her voice. "What does a five-year-old child know? Besides, Kevin's fine, isn't he?" I looked at her. "Who told you he was fine?" "Celeste told me. She told me he was just a little frightened. He'd be fine after getting some oxygen." Just then, the doctor walked in and corrected her coldly. "The patient suffered an acute asthma attack. If he'd been deprived of oxygen for any longer, the consequences could've been unimaginable.

The third strike brought the lock down with a loud crack. I rushed inside and pulled back the fallen curtains. Kevin was curled up in the corner. His little face was as pale as a sheet."Look at me, Kevin!"He couldn't open his eyes, and he only managed to grip one of my fingers. When the ambulance arrived, the paramedics immediately strapped an oxygen mask onto him. Celeste tried to get into the vehicle, but I raised my hand to stop her. "Don't touch him!" "Now's not the time to act out of spite, Kai.""When you deleted the surveillance footage, did you ever consider that he might die inside?" All the color drained from her lips. Jonah ran over with Iris in his arms. "Don't leave just yet, Celeste. The principal said she's calling the cops. Iris is just a child. We can't let this go on her record!"Celeste took a look at the ambulance before shifting her gaze toward him. That single glance was all it took. I slammed the ambulance door shut. By the time we reached the
