Chapter 3

Author: Forest Isle
Kevin slowly released the hem of Celeste's clothes.

"You promised Kevin you'd teach him how to make a kite during the open class," I reminded her.

"There'll be plenty of opportunities in the future," she responded flatly. "Iris was just ridiculed by her classmates over the way she addressed me. If I don't show up, it'll only make things worse for her."

"So, you're sacrificing your son's dignity to protect hers?"

Celeste scanned our surroundings. "Don't argue with me at school. It's embarrassing enough already!"

"Kai, I can ask Celeste not to go, but Iris' therapist said she can't be abandoned again," Jonah explained with red-rimmed eyes.

I looked him in the eye. "My son had three nightmares last night."

"Kevin has you by his side," he said. The moment the words left his mouth, he seemed to realize how inappropriate they sounded.

His expression stiffened, and he hurriedly added, "I mean, he's luckier than Iris."

Kevin suddenly looked up. "I can let Iris borrow Mommy for a day, Mr. Bellamy. However, she's already borrowed her for so many days."

He counted on his fingers. "My birthday, sports day, doctor's appointments, family day, and now… the open class, too. When will she give her back to me?"

No one answered.

…

After returning home, Kevin pulled a kite out of the cabinet. It was one he had made together with Celeste. The swallow's wings were crooked, and all three of our names were written on it.

He carried the kite into the living room. "Mommy, can you help me test it just once tonight? I can make one by myself tomorrow."

Celeste was busy assembling a model for Iris to use in the open class. Without looking up, she responded, "I'm busy. Go ask your father."

"But my teacher said Mommy has to teach me."

"Must you take every single thing your teacher says so literally?" Losing her patience, she reached for the glue and accidentally knocked his kite onto the floor.

Iris stepped on it with her shoes, snapping the bamboo frame in an instant.

Kevin let out a scream and shoved her.

Iris fell to the floor and burst into tears.

Jonah immediately rushed over and gathered his daughter into his arms. "Iris, are you okay?"

Celeste seized Kevin's arm. "Who taught you to push others?"

Kevin pointed at his kite, weeping. "She broke it!"

"Is an object more important than a person?"

"Mommy, you and I made this together."

"We can just make another one."

"You won't make another with me," he responded softly.

Celeste was visibly taken aback.

I picked Kevin up. "He shouldn't have pushed her. I'll teach him that. However, she stepped on his kite and broke it, so she owes him an apology, too."

After checking on his daughter, Jonah lowered his voice. "Iris didn't do it on purpose. Kevin was the one who got physical first. Why can't he apologize first?"

Celeste nodded. "Did you hear that?"

Kevin leaned against my shoulder and remained silent.

So, she reached out and forcibly took him from me. "Apologize to her right now. Don't make me repeat myself."

Kevin stiffened. Drop by drop, his tears fell onto her clothes. "I'm sorry."

Iris wiped away her tears and hid in Jonah's arms. "I won't forgive you unless you give me the kite."

Celeste picked up the broken kite. "Here, take it. It's already broken anyway."

Kevin thrashed wildly. "No! That's mine!"

Celeste was afraid he might fall, so she had no choice but to set him down.

He lunged at her to snatch his kite back, but a broken bamboo strip slashed a line of blood across his palm. I immediately took his hand in mine.

Celeste instinctively reached out, too, but Iris suddenly clutched her stomach and wailed. Jonah panicked and called out to her, "Hurry up and take a look at Iris, Celeste!"

Celeste's hand froze in midair. In the end, she turned toward Iris.

After applying a Band-Aid to Kevin's palm, I pulled out my phone and forwarded her the digital copy of the divorce agreement Mr. Preston had sent me. "Take a look at it when you have time, Celeste."

Celeste glanced at the title and immediately turned off the screen. "Are you threatening me with divorce?" Her tone was full of certainty. "I know you'd never want Kevin to grow up without a mother, and you wouldn't give up on this family either. So, go ahead and throw your little tantrum for a couple of days, but don't take it too far and teach our son the wrong lessons."

Having said her piece, she picked up a pair of scissors and, right in front of Kevin, cut off the corner of the kite with his name on it.

When Kevin walked in, holding Dad's hand, Celeste instinctively stood up. Kevin came to a halt when he saw her. This time, he didn't tremble or hide. He merely looked at her quietly. Celeste crouched down, her eyes misting over. "I'll leave as soon as I sign this, Kevin."He looked down at the agreement on the table. "Does that mean you're not my mommy anymore?" "I still am." She parted her lips. "If you want me to be, I'll always be your mommy." Kevin thought for a while. "Will you still be borrowed by someone else?" Tears streamed down her face. "No, I won't." However, he shook his head. "But I don't want to wait for you anymore." "I can wait.""For how long?""For as long as it takes."Kevin didn't answer. He simply pushed the damaged drawing toward Celeste. "You can have this." Celeste's hands trembled violently. "Do you not want it anymore?""My teacher asked me to draw a new one," he said softly. "My new drawing has Daddy, Grandpa, Grandma, and me." There w

Celeste watched the video three times. "If I call her Mommy, will she live with us?" Iris asked in the footage.Jonah smiled as he helped her put on their matching outfits. "As long as everyone thinks we're one big family, she won't have the heart to abandon you." When the video ended, her fingers unconsciously tightened around her phone. "Who sent this?" "Jonah's ex-wife," Mr. Preston answered. "While applying to modify the custody arrangement, she came across the event footage uploaded by the kindergarten." Celeste immediately dialed Jonah's number. "Why did you list me as Iris' stepmother on the registration form?"He was silent for a couple of seconds before he let out a derisive chuckle. "I just didn't want the school to look down on a child from a single-parent family." "What about that video?" "Iris wanted a mother. I was just comforting her." "So, you deliberately had her call me Mommy on the live broadcast?" Jonah's facade crumbled. It was as if he was done p

The following day, Celeste sent me three messages.Celeste: "Jonah had a bout of low blood sugar, but he's fine now. Iris was all alone at the hospital last night, and I couldn't leave a child alone there. Kai, this was an exceptional circumstance."I forwarded all three messages to Mr. Preston. "Include these in the evidence."After reading them, Mr. Preston shook his head. "She really does find a way to prove you're right to divorce her every single time." On the day of the mediation, Celeste arrived half an hour late. Her clothes were slightly wrinkled, and dark circles shadowed her eyes. The first thing she said after sitting down was, "I don't agree to the divorce." I placed the records I'd compiled on the table. 37 phone calls. 21 times she'd left at the last minute. Seven times she'd missed Kevin's important events. Right at the top was the proof of her deleting the kindergarten's surveillance footage. Looking at the thick stack of papers, Celeste's expression har

On the third day after we moved, Celeste showed up with a box of things. The moment the door opened, she pushed the box toward me. "I brought all of Kevin's picture books, clothes, and the nightlights from his bedside."I looked through the box without inviting her inside. "Thank you." My polite response made her stiffen. "Do we really have to talk to each other like this?" "How else should we talk, Ms. Rochester?" Celeste gazed at me for a long while. "I've already told Jonah not to contact me again." "That's your business." "You used to mind it so much." "That was then. This is now." Kevin's voice drifted out from inside as he talked to Dad. Celeste instinctively peered inside. "How's he doing today?" "His follow-up results are good." "Can I see him?" "I asked him. He doesn't want to see you." Her fingers brushed against the edge of the box, and she rasped out, "I bought him a new performance outfit. His teacher said there's another performance next month. I'

Celeste's grip slowly loosened. She stood outside the door, watching Kevin bury his face in my arms. "I won't come in."His voice trembled. "Close the door, Daddy."I closed the hospital room door in her face. I noticed that she still hadn't left through the glass.…That afternoon, my mother-in-law, Maya Smith, arrived at the hospital. However, her very first words were, "Jonah called me. He told me you're pressing charges against Iris."I tucked Kevin in. "She locked Kevin in the prop room. She should apologize and be taught a lesson." Maya lowered her voice. "What does a five-year-old child know? Besides, Kevin's fine, isn't he?" I looked at her. "Who told you he was fine?" "Celeste told me. She told me he was just a little frightened. He'd be fine after getting some oxygen." Just then, the doctor walked in and corrected her coldly. "The patient suffered an acute asthma attack. If he'd been deprived of oxygen for any longer, the consequences could've been unimaginable.

The third strike brought the lock down with a loud crack. I rushed inside and pulled back the fallen curtains. Kevin was curled up in the corner. His little face was as pale as a sheet."Look at me, Kevin!"He couldn't open his eyes, and he only managed to grip one of my fingers. When the ambulance arrived, the paramedics immediately strapped an oxygen mask onto him. Celeste tried to get into the vehicle, but I raised my hand to stop her. "Don't touch him!" "Now's not the time to act out of spite, Kai.""When you deleted the surveillance footage, did you ever consider that he might die inside?" All the color drained from her lips. Jonah ran over with Iris in his arms. "Don't leave just yet, Celeste. The principal said she's calling the cops. Iris is just a child. We can't let this go on her record!"Celeste took a look at the ambulance before shifting her gaze toward him. That single glance was all it took. I slammed the ambulance door shut. By the time we reached the
