Chapter 4

Author: Forest Isle
On the day Celeste attended the open class, Kevin didn't enter the classroom. He sat at the end of the hallway, clutching his mended kite.

When his teacher called me, he only repeated one sentence. "Mommy isn't my Mommy today."

By the time I rushed to the kindergarten, Jonah was taking photos of Celeste and Iris with his phone.

The three of them stood in front of their parent-child art project. Celeste lowered her head to fix Iris's hair, her expression gentle and patient.

When Kevin spotted her, he still ran over. "Mommy."

Celeste turned around, her brows knitting together slightly. "Why haven't you gone inside yet?"

"My teacher told me to find my own mommy." He held out his kite to her. "Can you hold it for me? It'll only take a moment."

Iris immediately wrapped her arms around Celeste's leg. "No, she's mine today!"

"Iris, you shouldn't say that. Ms. Rochester is Kevin's mother," Jonah reprimanded her softly.

Iris pouted. "But you told me last night that as long as I behaved, Celeste would stay with us forever."

Jonah's expression changed instantly. "She's spouting nonsense."

I looked at Celeste. "Did you hear that?"

She avoided my gaze. "Jonah was only trying to placate her. Don't obsess over every little detail."

Kevin held his kite out a little farther. "It'll only take a minute, Mommy."

Celeste finally took it from him.

His eyes had just lit up when Iris yanked the tail of the kite. "This is mine."

The kite ripped in half.

This time, he didn't cry. He crouched down and picked up the torn pieces of paper.

Jonah held Iris back. "Hurry up and apologize!"

Yet, she broke free from his grasp and ran toward the prop room beside the stairs with the kite. "I'm not giving it back! I'm going to hide it."

Kevin chased after her.

Several minutes later, the parent-child class officially began.

Kevin still hadn't returned, so I immediately rushed out of the classroom. "Kevin?"

No one answered.

His teacher pulled up the surveillance footage in the hallway. Iris shoved Kevin into the prop room, slid the latch shut, and jammed a small chair against the door.

Jonah panicked. "Iris is just playing a prank; she doesn't know she's not supposed to lock someone inside."

I turned on my heel and bolted toward the prop room. Celeste, however, stepped in front of the security monitor. "Don't make a scene just yet."

I stared at her in disbelief. "Kevin's locked inside!"

"I know," she whispered. "Jonah's fighting his ex-wife for custody right now. If this footage gets out, she'll use it to argue that he can't even raise his own daughter properly. He could lose Iris."

My fingernails dug into my palms. "So what?"

"The prop room's on this floor. Kevin'll be fine. First, get his teacher to delete the footage. As soon as we find him, I'll have Iris apologize to him."

Jonah grasped my arm. "Kai, I'm begging you; Iris is all I have. I can't lose her." I flung him away.

His teacher rushed back with the key, only to discover that the lock was broken. The room was filled with old curtains and stage backdrops. The windows were sealed shut, and Kevin had mild asthma.

I pounded on the door, calling out his name. At long last, a faint cough came from inside. "Daddy... I can't breathe." My blood ran cold in an instant.

Just then, the principal hurried over with an iPad. "I've backed up the surveillance footage. I'll call the cops right now."

The moment she pulled up the footage, Celeste snatched her iPad amid the commotion. "Hold on. We haven't gotten to the bottom of this yet!" In the same breath, her fingers flew across the screen, tapping into the files and hitting delete.

The principal looked at the screen, and her expression changed drastically. "Did you just delete the footage?"

I whipped my head around.

Celeste's hand was still hovering beside the delete button. She looked at me and explained quietly, "I merely wanted to protect Jonah's daughter first."

Right then, a dull thud came from inside the room, as if something had collapsed. I snatched the fire axe off the wall and brought it down on the door lock.

When Kevin walked in, holding Dad's hand, Celeste instinctively stood up. Kevin came to a halt when he saw her. This time, he didn't tremble or hide. He merely looked at her quietly. Celeste crouched down, her eyes misting over. "I'll leave as soon as I sign this, Kevin."He looked down at the agreement on the table. "Does that mean you're not my mommy anymore?" "I still am." She parted her lips. "If you want me to be, I'll always be your mommy." Kevin thought for a while. "Will you still be borrowed by someone else?" Tears streamed down her face. "No, I won't." However, he shook his head. "But I don't want to wait for you anymore." "I can wait.""For how long?""For as long as it takes."Kevin didn't answer. He simply pushed the damaged drawing toward Celeste. "You can have this." Celeste's hands trembled violently. "Do you not want it anymore?""My teacher asked me to draw a new one," he said softly. "My new drawing has Daddy, Grandpa, Grandma, and me." There w

Celeste watched the video three times. "If I call her Mommy, will she live with us?" Iris asked in the footage.Jonah smiled as he helped her put on their matching outfits. "As long as everyone thinks we're one big family, she won't have the heart to abandon you." When the video ended, her fingers unconsciously tightened around her phone. "Who sent this?" "Jonah's ex-wife," Mr. Preston answered. "While applying to modify the custody arrangement, she came across the event footage uploaded by the kindergarten." Celeste immediately dialed Jonah's number. "Why did you list me as Iris' stepmother on the registration form?"He was silent for a couple of seconds before he let out a derisive chuckle. "I just didn't want the school to look down on a child from a single-parent family." "What about that video?" "Iris wanted a mother. I was just comforting her." "So, you deliberately had her call me Mommy on the live broadcast?" Jonah's facade crumbled. It was as if he was done p

The following day, Celeste sent me three messages.Celeste: "Jonah had a bout of low blood sugar, but he's fine now. Iris was all alone at the hospital last night, and I couldn't leave a child alone there. Kai, this was an exceptional circumstance."I forwarded all three messages to Mr. Preston. "Include these in the evidence."After reading them, Mr. Preston shook his head. "She really does find a way to prove you're right to divorce her every single time." On the day of the mediation, Celeste arrived half an hour late. Her clothes were slightly wrinkled, and dark circles shadowed her eyes. The first thing she said after sitting down was, "I don't agree to the divorce." I placed the records I'd compiled on the table. 37 phone calls. 21 times she'd left at the last minute. Seven times she'd missed Kevin's important events. Right at the top was the proof of her deleting the kindergarten's surveillance footage. Looking at the thick stack of papers, Celeste's expression har

On the third day after we moved, Celeste showed up with a box of things. The moment the door opened, she pushed the box toward me. "I brought all of Kevin's picture books, clothes, and the nightlights from his bedside."I looked through the box without inviting her inside. "Thank you." My polite response made her stiffen. "Do we really have to talk to each other like this?" "How else should we talk, Ms. Rochester?" Celeste gazed at me for a long while. "I've already told Jonah not to contact me again." "That's your business." "You used to mind it so much." "That was then. This is now." Kevin's voice drifted out from inside as he talked to Dad. Celeste instinctively peered inside. "How's he doing today?" "His follow-up results are good." "Can I see him?" "I asked him. He doesn't want to see you." Her fingers brushed against the edge of the box, and she rasped out, "I bought him a new performance outfit. His teacher said there's another performance next month. I'

Celeste's grip slowly loosened. She stood outside the door, watching Kevin bury his face in my arms. "I won't come in."His voice trembled. "Close the door, Daddy."I closed the hospital room door in her face. I noticed that she still hadn't left through the glass.…That afternoon, my mother-in-law, Maya Smith, arrived at the hospital. However, her very first words were, "Jonah called me. He told me you're pressing charges against Iris."I tucked Kevin in. "She locked Kevin in the prop room. She should apologize and be taught a lesson." Maya lowered her voice. "What does a five-year-old child know? Besides, Kevin's fine, isn't he?" I looked at her. "Who told you he was fine?" "Celeste told me. She told me he was just a little frightened. He'd be fine after getting some oxygen." Just then, the doctor walked in and corrected her coldly. "The patient suffered an acute asthma attack. If he'd been deprived of oxygen for any longer, the consequences could've been unimaginable.

The third strike brought the lock down with a loud crack. I rushed inside and pulled back the fallen curtains. Kevin was curled up in the corner. His little face was as pale as a sheet."Look at me, Kevin!"He couldn't open his eyes, and he only managed to grip one of my fingers. When the ambulance arrived, the paramedics immediately strapped an oxygen mask onto him. Celeste tried to get into the vehicle, but I raised my hand to stop her. "Don't touch him!" "Now's not the time to act out of spite, Kai.""When you deleted the surveillance footage, did you ever consider that he might die inside?" All the color drained from her lips. Jonah ran over with Iris in his arms. "Don't leave just yet, Celeste. The principal said she's calling the cops. Iris is just a child. We can't let this go on her record!"Celeste took a look at the ambulance before shifting her gaze toward him. That single glance was all it took. I slammed the ambulance door shut. By the time we reached the
