I clenched my hands so tightly my nails nearly dug into my palms, just to keep my voice from trembling.

“Mrs. Vane,” I said, calmer than I felt, “I don’t believe a person’s worth is defined by how they’ve failed in the past.”

The air in the room seemed to freeze.

Arabella narrowed her eyes at me, her gaze shifting from contempt to a cold, calculating interest.

“Oh?” she let out a faint, amused laugh. “At least you know how to push back.”

I clenched my hands so tightly my nails nearly dug into my palms, just to keep my voice from trembling.“Mrs. Vane,” I said, calmer than I felt, “I don’t believe a person’s worth is defined by how they’ve failed in the past.”The air in the room seemed to freeze.Arabella narrowed her eyes at me, her gaze shifting from contempt to a cold, calculating interest.“Oh?” she let out a faint, amused laugh. “At least you know how to push back.”Silas tilted his head slightly, his eyes brushing over me for a fleeting second—just enough for me to realize he was evaluating my response.“Silas!” a soft female voice rang out, trembling faintly as if struggling to contain emotions long suppressed.Only then did the young woman speak, her eyes glistening as she looked at him. The soft click of her high heels echoed as she stepped closer to where Silas and I stood. Her long, dark brown hair fell in gentle waves, her pale skin and wide, bright eyes carrying the effortless confidence of someone born in

Silas quickly finished preparing the contract and placed it at the center of the desk in his study. Just three concise pages summarized how the next year and a half of my life would unfold.I couldn’t remember how many documents I had signed in my life, but I remembered very clearly the moment my pen touched the final line of the marriage contract. My palms turned ice-cold, even though the room was kept at a comfortable temperature. I had signed countless papers before—investment contracts, acquisition documents, executive personnel files—but never had any agreement made my chest feel this heavy.Silas stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, his tall figure half-submerged in shadow. The city at night stretched behind him like a cold sea of stars.I closed the contract, quietly watching his back, thoughts flickering through my mind. In the end, I decided to ask.“Why did you choose me?” I looked up at him. “You don’t even know what kind of person I am. And more importantly… I’m buried in

Elara’s POVThe moment I heard my name, my last resolve melted away. I burst into a fresh round of tears as I lost my footing. Just as I was about to fall, strong hands pulled me up.I stared up at him as tears rolled down my cheeks. I knew that face. I had seen it across crowded gala halls and on the covers of every financial magazine in the country.Silas Vane."How... how do you know who I am?" I whispered with a hiccup. Important people like him barely knew people like me.He didn't answer immediately. Instead, his gaze swept over my disheveled state, from my tangled hair down to my bleeding knees. "You’re quite hard not to know although this version of you is strange.”At his words, I cried even harder and slumped tiredly against him but surprisingly, he didn’t push me away. He simply carried me effortlessly and put me in the passenger seat of his Rolls Royce. When I was settled, he got in as well and began to drive."Talk," he commanded, his eyes fixed on the road. "Where is tha

Silas’s POVI angrily ran my hands through my hair as I paced the boardroom, trying to rein in my anger. The board members watched me with calculative eyes, trying to see if I would lose my temper, just like the rumors said."You have just two days, Silas," Mr. Henderson said from across the table. “The rumors are getting stronger by the day and we are running out of time.”“I still can't believe you’re going to choose a flimsy rumor over me,” I snapped, my fury increasing.“It isn’t just a rumor, there are claims to back it up and you know it,” Mr. Willow inputted.Fucking claims. I didn’t believe they would all turn their backs on me when I needed them the most over some stupid rumors I knew were being circulated by my stepmother and brother. At this point, they were putting in their very all to see me fall.A few months ago, I broke up with my girlfriend because I caught her in bed with the guy she claimed to be just friends with. I was shattered because I already had an engagement

Elara’s POVI stared at their faces, hoping this was one big joke but as their cold gazes met mine, I realized they weren’t here to play.“I’m sorry, I think you have the wrong person.” I tried as I backed away from them. It was obviously a wrong move because before I could even take two steps, one of the men was already at my back, blocking any form of escape.“Money, now,” the leader repeated."Please, that’s impossible! I didn't authorize—""Your signature says otherwise," he growled, stepping into my personal space. "We don't care about your lover's spat. All we want is our money. You have twenty-four hours to provide the first installment, or we start taking it out of your skin."“You can’t do that,” I whispered, fear filling me.“Try us,” he replied."Please," I sobbed, not caring if I looked pitiful. "He took everything. I don't have such an amount!"“Sweet story, but I really don’t care,” he snapped. His eyes went to my car keys that were clutched in my hands. Before I knew wh

Elara’s POVI didn't even bother to take off my clothes when I reached my apartment. I simply collapsed onto my bed and cried until my eyes were swollen and my throat was parched.I stared at the ceiling and wondered where I ever went wrong. Was I really that neglectful? But Brian told me he had my back. He was literally the one that urged me to take my work seriously and avoid distractions. He always encouraged me to spend more time in the office and I had always thought he meant well for me but now, it was clear he just needed more time to cheat. He just needed more time to slip my best friend into his bed.As I cried, I expected Brian or even Sophie to call me but I got nothing, which only made their betrayal sting more. By the time it was midnight, I slept due to exhaustion but I didn’t get enough rest. When I woke up, I expected to see an apology text from them but still, nothing. The silence should have been my warning, but my heart was still trapped in a web of denial. He’s jus
