FAYE'S POV

The ceremonial doors at the far end of the hall swung open with deliberate slowness, and Alpha Silas emerged first. He moved with the kind of authority that seemed to part the crowd simply through the force of his presence. His formal clothing was midnight blue—a color that was somehow both elegant and severe—and the silver threading at his temples caught the candlelight like an intentional accent.

He ascended the dais steps without hesitation, his movements economical and controlled. This was a man who'd never had to question whether he belonged in any space. The very concept would probably strike him as absurd.

Behind him came the ceremonial attendants, carrying the objects of the ritual. The drinking horn—made from the tusk of an ancient wolf, polished to cream-white perfection and bound with silver at the base. The ceremonial blade, used only for bonding rituals and the most sacred pack moments. The silk cord, dyed in the colors of the Obsidian Peak pack.

And then Ethan.

My breath caught somewhere in my chest, and I had to grip the column more tightly to keep myself grounded.

He was taller than I remembered—or perhaps I'd simply forgotten the exact dimensions of him in the weeks since I'd last seen him up close. His blonde hair caught the ceremonial light and turned almost golden, falling in careful waves that suggested he'd spent time arranging it specifically for this event. His face was beautiful in that particular way that Hartwell blood produced—sharp cheekbones, a strong jaw, grey eyes that seemed to hold secrets.

Those eyes were fixed ahead, on the altar, on his father, on the ceremonial space. Not on the crowd. Certainly not on the shadows where a pale girl in a grey dress stood with her heart trying to escape her ribs.

My wolf surged forward with such intensity that I had to bite the inside of my cheek to keep from making a sound. She recognized him completely, utterly, with the kind of absolute certainty that couldn't be denied or questioned or rationalized away. This was her mate. This was the one she'd been waiting for.

Ethan climbed the dais steps with measured grace, each movement carefully controlled. The warrior in him was evident in his bearing—the way he held his shoulders, the deliberate placement of each foot. He would be a formidable alpha someday. That much was obvious even now, before he'd officially come into his power.

He would be magnificent.

And then Lydia emerged from the opposite side of the dais, and everything in me went very still.

She wore silver—of course she wore silver. The color complemented her honey-blonde hair in ways that had clearly been carefully planned. The dress itself was a masterpiece of expensive tailoring, fitted perfectly to her frame, draped in ways that suggested both elegance and deliberate sensuality. Her grey eyes—so like her father's, so like Ethan's—were fixed on him with an intensity that made my stomach clench.

She moved to stand beside him on the dais, and I watched as his expression shifted. Just slightly. Just enough to suggest awareness, acknowledgment, something that looked almost like satisfaction.

My wolf made a sound I'd never heard her make before. A low, pained noise that came from somewhere deeper than thought.

Lydia positioned herself so that she was angled toward Ethan, close enough that the casual observer might mistake proximity for intimacy. She was smiling—that particular smile she'd perfected over years of getting exactly what she wanted. It was a smile that said she knew something everyone else didn't. That said she'd already won whatever game was being played.

Alpha Silas lifted the ceremonial drinking horn, and the crowd fell into absolute silence. This was the moment. The formal beginning of the ritual. The point at which all other considerations fell away and only the bond mattered.

"We gather to honor the bonds that unite our pack," Alpha Silas's voice carried across the hall with the effortless projection of an alpha accustomed to being heard and obeyed. "We gather to witness the pairings that have been written into our blood, that transcend politics and social consideration and speak only to the ancient power that connects wolf to wolf."

He turned slightly to face Ethan, and I saw something in his expression that I'd never quite noticed before. A kind of satisfaction. A sense that his son was fulfilling some predetermined role perfectly.

"The Mating Festival has called us here to acknowledge fate," Alpha Silas continued, extending the drinking horn toward Ethan. "To stand witness as wolves recognize their destined mates and choose, freely and without coercion, to enter into bonds that will strengthen our bloodlines and ensure the continuation of our pack's power."

Ethan reached out to accept the horn, and my eyes tracked the movement carefully. His hands were large, shaped for gripping weapons and holding power. They were alpha's hands. Hands that would one day command respect simply through their positioning.

Hands that, somewhere in my chest, my wolf had believed might one day hold mine.

"Do you accept the sacred calling of this moment?" Alpha Silas asked, his voice dropping into something more formal. "Do you stand ready to recognize your fated mate and enter into the bonds of destiny that have been written for your line?"

"I do," Ethan responded, and his voice was steady. Confident. The voice of someone who'd never questioned whether he belonged exactly where he stood.

He lifted the drinking horn to his lips and drank—a ritual sip that was more about symbolism than actual consumption. When he lowered it again, his eyes were different. Sharper. More focused. His wolf was rising to the surface now, responding to the ceremonial magic that was being woven throughout the hall.

My own wolf rose to meet him, pressing forward with an intensity that made my vision blur slightly. The scent of the crowd suddenly became overwhelmingly acute—each wolf's signature distinct and separate, a complex tapestry of pack dynamics and hierarchy and individual power.

But above all of it, Ethan's scent. Bronze and autumn and something warm that made my wolf sing with recognition.

He was looking out over the crowd now, those sharp grey eyes scanning the gathered pack members. His wolf was searching, seeking, responding to the magical pull of a fated bond.

Any moment now. Any second. He would feel it. He would know. He would look down and see me in the shadows, and everything would change.

My grip on the column loosened slightly. My breathing became shallower.

This was it. This was the moment.

Lydia was still standing beside him, still smiling that satisfied smile, but it would fade once he recognized me. That smile would shatter like glass when he realized his true mate was standing in the crowd. When he understood that the bond had chosen not the beautiful, legitimate daughter of an alpha, but the illegitimate servant girl who scraped his father's hearth stones.

The magic in the hall was building now, a palpable pressure that made even my human senses aware of something vast and ancient stirring beneath the surface. The bonds were about to reveal themselves. Fated mates were about to recognize one another across whatever distances or obstacles might separate them.

My wolf pressed forward with absolute certainty.

"He's looking", she whispered. "He's searching for us. Any moment now, he'll see us. Everything changes. Finally, everything changes."

I stepped slightly out from behind the column, just enough to be within potential sight lines. Just enough that when his wolf looked for me, she would find me.

My heart was beating so hard I was surprised the entire hall couldn't hear it.

Any moment now.

Any second.

The bond would speak, and I would finally be seen.

  • Bound In Darkness    Chapter 10: Cornered

FAYE'S POVThe fall lasted longer than I expected.Time seemed to dilate as I dropped, my body tumbling through cold air, the sound of the wolves' snarls fading behind me as the distance increased. There was a moment—just a fragment of consciousness—where I almost felt peaceful. Almost grateful. The rejection, the humiliation, the broken bond, the hunters—all of it fell away with me, suspended in the space between the cliff edge and whatever waited below. My wolf was silent. Completely, utterly silent. As if she'd finally accepted what my body was choosing. The water hit like a physical blow.It wasn't the graceful dive into a pool that I'd somehow imagined in that strange, detached moment before impact. It was a violent collision with something that felt solid, that knocked the air from my lungs and sent lightning-bright pain through my left side where my ribs had already been damaged. The water was shockingly cold—cold enough that it felt like my skin was being stripped away, cold e

  • Bound In Darkness    Chapter 9: The perimeter guards

FAYE'S POVI'd been following the stream for perhaps two hours when I first sensed them.It wasn't a sound that alerted me—the water rushing over rocks was too loud for that, drowning out most other auditory information. It was something else. Something in the way the forest seemed to shift around me. The way the air changed texture. The way my wolf, even in her dulled, fractured state, lifted her damaged head and made a sound of warning that came out as barely more than a whisper.Hunters.The realization sent a spike of adrenaline through my chest that almost felt like feeling something again. Almost broke through the numbness that had settled over me during my flight into the wilderness. They were still distant—far enough away that I couldn't see them, couldn't hear them over the sound of the water. But I could smell them now that I knew what to look for. The particular scent signature of the Obsidian Peak pack, mixed with the sharper scent of pursuit. They'd picked up my trail alr

  • Bound In Darkness    Chapter 8: Into the wilderness

FAYE'S POVI didn't plan the escape. There was no careful consideration of routes or timing or what I might need for survival in the mountains. There was only the knowledge that if I stayed in that room, waiting for Mrs. Thorne to arrive with whatever punishment had been decided, something inside me would break in ways that couldn't be repaired. My wolf had already broken. Now it was just a matter of keeping my body functioning long enough to find somewhere to collapse. The servant quarters were emptying as the night deepened—staff filtering back from their various ceremonial duties, moving toward rest, toward the normalcy of sleep and tomorrow. I waited until the corridor was relatively quiet, then pulled on the heaviest cloak I owned and slipped out into the night. No one tried to stop me. Why would they? I was invisible, and the invisible don't warrant observation. The main doors of the fortress were unguarded on the service side—only the grand entrance received formal security at

  • Bound In Darkness    Chapter 7: public Humiliation

FAYE'S POVThe guards didn't release me immediately. They held me suspended in the space between the crowd and the dais, my feet barely touching the ground, my arms pinned at awkward angles. Around us, the celebration had paused. The magic that had been flowing through the hall moments before seemed to have fractured into confused fragments.Hundreds of eyes were on me.I could feel the weight of their attention like a physical thing—the pack's curiosity, their judgment, their schadenfreude. A servant girl had crossed into a space she didn't belong. A servant girl had presumed to interrupt the sacred ceremony. A servant girl had revealed her desperate, pathetic hope in front of the entire pack. The deliciousness of my humiliation was almost palpable.Alpha Silas descended one step from the dais, his movement deliberate and commanding. The crowd's murmur quieted immediately. This was the alpha speaking—not through words yet, but through presence. Through the simple fact of his attentio

  • Bound In Darkness    Chapter 6: The broken bond

FAYE'S POVI stepped out from behind the column. It was a small movement—just a few steps that brought me from the shadows into the peripheral light of the torches. Nothing dramatic. Nothing that should have drawn immediate attention in a hall filled with hundreds of people. But my wolf knew. On some level deeper than conscious thought, she seemed to believe that this small act of visibility was all that was necessary. That stepping into the light would be enough to make him see her. To make the bond snap into place, undeniable and absolute.I moved toward the open space at the edge of the dais, my grey dress catching the candlelight just slightly. Around me, I could feel the magic in the hall reaching a crescendo—other bonds were forming, I realized distantly. Other fated mates were recognizing one another. The ceremonial magic was working, drawing wolves to their destinies.Ethan's head turned. For just a moment—one perfect, crystalline moment—his eyes found mine across the crowd.A
