ALEXANDRO'S POV

“I do not need a wife.” I barked at my brother over the phone, not caring that people were staring at me or I was in a hospital. No one dared complain, I had bought the hospital along with every damn staff in it the day before.

“You do not actually, but if you want to lias with the old man, you need a woman you’re legally bound to standing beside you. It’s the rules.” Ian replied over the phone. “Besides, marriage is not so bad a thing,” Ian concluded. The man believed in love.

“I think you just got lucky. I’d see what I can do to get the old man’s attention.” With that, I hung up.

I didn’t need a woman giving me a headache, women meant too much trouble and I just wasn’t interested. They had no value beyond sexual pleasure, and I didn’t need to marry one before getting that, another thing was the legal right she would have if she decided to leave.

“Please, please, give me a month, just a month, and I’ll pay up, just please take care of my dad, please, I beg of you.” A girl running after a doctor caught my attention. She had hair as dark as midnight and quite a small body.

“A week! Give me a week. I’ll pay up. Just please don’t stop treating him.” She was close to tears. I hated begging or people who begged, or cried, I considered both acts very pathetic.

I walked past her; my hospital wasn’t a charity ground.

My driver was waiting for me with the car door open, “Take me home.”

He started the car, “You have a dinner reservation with Russo this evening.” He reminded me.

I didn’t forget. I dialed my secretary’s numbers. “Cancel my reservation with Russo.”

“You can’t do that sir, you canceled the last one, and the one before that.” She informed me.

It was true, I didn’t like Ben Russo, he was a businessman like me, but he always put his hands on the dirty things. I play dirty, when necessary, but I could handle it, Russo couldn’t. He always messed up and then came to me to clean it up for him.

“Okay.” Then to the driver. “Take me there.”

Baxter made a swift U-turn, and we were on our way. My staff always obeyed before complaining, only if I could get a wife that was as obedient, one which I would keep under my paw and would never disobey me.

It was an Italian restaurant, at least I would have good food to push down whatever Russo had done this time, but on getting there I found a very amusing sight.

A girl was being thrown out of a cafe close by. A girl with midnight black hair.

I recognized the hair, it was the girl who had been begging in the hospital, she was begging again, this time a chubby woman who was flinging bags at her.

“Get out of here and do not come back again.” The woman spoke pure Italian. It meant the girl was also Italian, nice.

“Please, I’ll do anything you want, please. I’m sorry, I need to work, you can’t throw me out, please.” The girl replied in English, begging the woman, she was crying too, again—such a weak woman.

She sounded so desperate, willing to do anything. Promises people make in moments of desperation.

Then a very awesome idea came to mind, It was perfect. “Baxter, see that woman over there? I want you to find out everything you know about her before I’m done with Russo.”

It turned out that Russo had upset the wrong people this time. Unfortunately for him, I wasn’t in the mood to help, but to give Baxter more time, I ate my dinner slowly, I didn’t visit restaurants often, I had the best chef in my home, and I ate whatever cuisine I wanted. I could afford it.

My phone buzzed, it was a mail from Baxter.

The girl, her name was Emily Fitz. Her father was in a coma, he had an accident while she had recently been sleeping and working at the café I had seen her.

Sounded like she had bad reasons to be desperate. But for some reason, her name sounded familiar.

I stood up and looked at Russo. “You’ll have to handle this one yourself, I have more pressing matters to deal with.”

The girl was still sitting with her bags outside, on the streets, the clouds had become dark and it was about to rain. I brought out an umbrella from my car and walked up to her.

She had purple eyes, something tugged my heart as she looked up at me in shock as I held the umbrella over her head.

I stretched my hands to her “Will you marry me?”

EMILY'S POV

It was the worst day of my life. It was even worse than the day of the accident. The day I lost everything I had. Losing lots of things was hard, but when you had just one thing you banked on, one thing that had always shielded you, one thing you could run and hide in and you lost it, it was way worse.

Today I had been a double hit. First, the hospital had called and threatened to remove my dad from the IUC, which meant leaving him to die, second, the café I worked in had let me go. I had sold the house to take care of Dad earlier last week, I got the money and slept at the shop that night but when I woke up, the cheque was gone. I knew it was Johnny, the owner’s son, but when I accused him, instead of getting my money back, I got fired. I didn’t even have the strength to ask for the money, if I couldn’t work here I had nowhere to sleep. All my begging went in vain.

The clouds had gathered and it began raining. I closed my eyes in surrender, It was finally the end. This was the point where I said my last prayer and awaited the grim reaper to come take away my soul.

Instead, I saw black shoes walk up to me. Had God heard me? Or was this the kind of payers God answered? I wasn’t dead but the Grim Reaper was here. Instead of a harvester, he held an umbrella and placed it over me. I looked up at him in surprise. But I was more surprised at his next words.

“Will you marry me?”

I hoped he wouldn't be.He shook his head, "I'm a bit glad you didn't, I fear I might over thought t if you had told me. Thank you for being a strong woman Emily. You did very well in my absense.""But I am not doing too well in your presence, am I?" I asked."Of course not." He murmured. I hid a smile because I knew what was wrong.I wrapped my arms around him from behind. His muscles were taut like he was tense and scared, I couldn’t help rubbing my cheeks against his ba

EPILOGUE 2ALEXANDROParis prison shouldn’t even be considered a prison. It was just another place where I was King. I ruled the whole ward in the first month I got there and was worshiped during the rest. What a year in prison couldn’t do, just five minutes with Emily did it. made me scared, made me feel weak.I saw through her façade and saw the anxiety she tried to mask her nervousness.“Well, it’s not that.” She murmured, avoiding my eyes.I would have thought it to be impossible but Emily looked even better than I remembered. Prettier. Her violet eyes shone brighter, and although I knew she was nervous, true happiness filtered out through her eyes, and my heart broke.“Who is it?” I asked.“What?” She looked somewhat lost.“Who is he?” I knew from her eyes. She was happy. She had met someone else and he made her happy.“DO you know why I couldn’t visit you even when you finally permitted me to?” She asked.I broke her gaze. I had started it by refusing to see her. I needed her to

EPILOGUE 1EMILYOne year Later.I was late.Technically anyway. They would wait till I got there.France's government had taken it upon themselves to deliver Alexandro back to America. I think it was their way of making amends considering the worth of the properties he had in their country. As his wife on paper, I had to be the one to pick him up.If it were up to me, the whole family would follow me but I didn’t trust them not to leak my big secret to Alexandro before I did. And I wanted to be the one to do it. I was a bit uneasy about his reaction, maybe scared but what was top on my heart was to see him.I wonder how prison had treated him. I was also guilty he had gone there because of me. My fault.“How do I look?” I turned to Chloe, giving her a 360 degree view of my dress. More than anyone else, Chloe was most displeased with me.A little bit jealous too that I came back with my mother.“Very much more dashing than you should.” She replied, her face stoic but I could see her ey

EMILYThe case had been adjourned three times and we had to change lawyer halfway through but finally, the trial came to an end.At first, we had thought the case and court were just for formality but it had been discovered that Russo’s long-lost grandmother was French, and the French government wanted to fight for her citizens. We claimed self defense but apart from Amelia and I, there was no one to testify against Russo in court. It didn’t help that the man was head. Alexandro had aimed for his head. Now we were waiting for the judge to announce her verdict.Alexandro was made to pay a thousand do

EMILYI was alive. My legs hurt, and so did my chest and head but I felt no excruciating pain that should have come from a gunshot. The room was still again like everyone held their breath.“Emily.” I heard someone call. It was Sarah. I opened my eyes.Russo lay on the floor. He was unmistakenly dead and his brains had been slipped open. I closed my eyes again.Strong arms lifted me. Not sarah’s arms.Alexandro.I opened my eyes again. My head was swimming, so many things happening at the same time. “Where do you hurt?” Alexandro’s voice asked.“He hit me. My head, my legs, my chest. He hit Amelia too. Take care of Amelia.” I rasped. My head was banging. Maybe it was the noise of the gunshot. It could also be from when he smacked my head with the gun. I closed my eyes again.Alexandro’s hand touched my legs and I winced. “I think it’s broken. I’ll take you to the hospital.” Alexandro said moving me outside. “Sarah will take care of Amelia.” I nodded, letting him take care of me.I hea

“Amelia killed your dad.”EMILYMy eyes shot to my mom. “What’s he saying?”Amelia was rude and sassy, she was stuck on herself, and didn’t care about other people, but a murderer? I didn’t think so.I didn’t know what she did for her agency or whatnot, but why would she kill my dad? And I thought I knew how my dad died. Alexandro cut him off life support. But who knew what devilish things she did for the agency? There had to be a reason Sarah’s dad didn’t let her join.“Explain,” I commanded.“Explain mama.” The masked man echoed unnecessarily. “Explain how you ruined this beautiful princess’ life and mine as well.”Amelia began crying. “I didn’t know he would have a heart attack. I swear. I just wanted him to leave me alone.” She began.“He kept trying to find me, I sent letters, telling him to stop looking for me. I didn’t know how but I managed to find myself once and the agency didn’t like it. So I had to find a way for him to stop trying to find me.” She stopped, sobbing. The so
