"Today," the Matron announced, her voice cutting through the armory, "you become the prey."

Nobody laughed.

Nobody moved.

We stood in silence beneath the torchlit ceiling. The room smelled of iron and old leather. Silver weapons lined the walls, but none of them were meant for us.

The Matron stepped forward holding a small obsidian vial.

"The Prince's transition has entered the predatory phase."

A ripple of unease moved through the room.

"The beast is trying to reveal itself before the expected time and we cannot stop it, can we?

"she smirked.

She uncapped the vial.

"And therefore today, we make each of you impossible to ignore."

One by one, she pressed a drop of dark oil onto our wrists.

When she reached me, the scent hit instantly. Bitter herbs. Smoke. Something ancient.

The oil disappeared into my skin.

"This is the Scent of the Quarry," the Matron said. "For the next twelve hours, you will shine to the Prince like torches in darkness."

Genevieve raised a trembling hand.

"How do we hide from something that can feel us through stone walls?"

"With your own will."

"That's impossible," I said before I could stop myself.

Several girls turned toward me.

The Matron's gaze landed on mine.

"Is it?"

"You said he can feel our resonance."

"Yes."

"You said he'll be hunting."

"Yes."

"Then hiding isn't skill. It's luck."

A murmur spread through the line.

The Matron took one step closer.

"Luck is the excuse people use when they fail."

I crossed my arms.

"And what happens when he finds us?"

The room went silent.

Nobody wanted the answer.

The Matron didn't hesitate.

"Then pray he is in a merciful mood."

Genevieve swallowed.

"And if he isn't?"

The Matron's expression remained cold then she smiled and said nothing.

Nobody spoke after that.

The Matron dismissed us.

I returned to the Spire with her words following me the entire way.

You become the prey.

The tower felt exposed now.

Like every wall had turned transparent.

I sat against the glass and closed my eyes.

Find the stillness.

Instead, my father's voice returned.

"The mind is a labyrinth, Aylin."

One of his rare lucid afternoons.

"Most people get lost because they keep running. Find the center and stay there."

Back then I thought he was talking about grief.

Now I understood he was talking about survival.

I stopped trying to force my thoughts quiet.

Instead, I went inward.

To the place where my mother's face was still clear.

Where my father's voice never faltered.

The one place inside me that the world hadn't managed to ruin.

I settled there.

And breathed.

The temperature dropped instantly.

Cold spread through the room.

My breath turned white.

Then I felt him.

Heavy.

Searching.

The sensation moved through the palace like a living thing.

Mind by mind.

Looking.

Hunting.

Then suddenly.....

Found you.

The words weren't spoken, I felt them.

An image flashed across my mind.

The palace below.

The Spire glowing.

Me standing at its center.

I should have panicked.

I didn't.

Instead, I opened the center of my labyrinth.

I offered stillness.

Peace.

A place where nothing needed to chase or run.

The pressure touched it.

Then slowed.

For the first time, it felt tired.

Then a scream shattered everything.

Mira, Oh no!!

The connection broke.

Pain shot through my skull.

I jumped to my feet and ran onto the balcony.

Fog swallowed the mountains.

Shouts echoed from below.

Guards were running.

Stone cracked somewhere in the lower palace.

And beneath it all, I felt Mira's terror burning like a beacon.

The fog beside me exploded outward.

Something landed on the railing.

Lucien.

His chest rose and fell hard.

Dark hair clung to his forehead.

His eyes were silver.

Not calm silver.

Wild silver.

The silver of something barely holding itself together.

He gripped the railing hard enough to leave marks in the stone.

Then he looked up.

"You silenced it."

His voice sounded rough.

"The shift."

I shook my head.

"I didn't."

"You did."

"I only stopped running."

For a moment neither of us spoke.

Then something unexpected happened.

He laughed.

It wasn't loud.

It sounded exhausted.

"Do you have any idea how many people have tried that?"

"No."

"Neither do I."

I frowned.

"That's not reassuring."

"It wasn't supposed to be."

His breathing gradually slowed.

The silver in his eyes remained bright.

"Were you hunting Mira?" I asked.

His expression changed immediately.

"No."

"Then why was she screaming?"

"Because fear spreads faster than truth."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one you're getting."

I folded my arms.

"You enjoy being difficult."

One corner of his mouth lifted.

"And you enjoy asking dangerous questions."

The sight caught me off guard.

It was the closest thing to a genuine smile I had ever seen from him.

Then it disappeared.

His gaze settled on me again.

Not searching.

Studying.

"I felt your mother."

The words hit harder than I expected.

My hands gripped the railing.

"What?"

"In the stillness."

His voice was quieter now.

"I felt where she should have been."

I couldn't speak.

Nobody had ever described grief that way before.

Not as pain.

Not as sadness.

As absence.

As a place that should have been filled.

The shouting below faded into the background.

For one strange moment, it felt like we were the only two people standing in the world.

Then Lucien stepped back.

Without warning.

Without another word.

He dropped from the railing.

My breath caught.

The fog swallowed him instantly.

Gone.

I stared into the darkness.

The stone beneath my hands was still warm from where he'd been.

Below, the palace remained in chaos.

The Hunt was far from over.

It had only begun.

I looked down at my wrists.

And froze.

The dark oil was glowing.

Silver light spread beneath my skin.

Slowly.

Steadily.

Growing brighter with every heartbeat.

My pulse stumbled.

The glow didn't fade.

It intensified.

As though something inside me had finally opened its eyes.

AYLIN'S POV Three days of training had left bruises on top of bruises, but for the first time, I felt something shifting."Again," Iliana said.I focused on the wooden target across the yard, reaching for that same thread of concentration that had sent the equipment flying days earlier. This time, instead of chaos, a single practice sword lifted cleanly off its rack and hovered steadily in the air."Better," Iliana said. "Control matters more than power. Anyone can be strong. Strength without control simply becomes another threat to the people around you."I lowered the sword gently back to the ground, sweat sticking my shirt to my back, exhaustion pulling at every limb. It was a different kind of tiredness than before, though. Less like collapsing, more like something being built.Lucien watched from the edge of the yard, arms crossed, a small, proud smile tugging at his mouth that he probably didn't realize was showing."That's enough for today," he said, once Iliana gave a nod of

LUCIEN'S POVHer breathing slowed gradually beneath my hand, the panic draining out of her by degrees until her eyes finally drifted shut again.I stayed exactly where I was, watching the rise and fall of her chest, cataloguing every small twitch of her fingers against the sheets like it might warn me of another nightmare before it fully took hold. When her breathing settled into something even and deep, I allowed myself to exhale. He threatened her. Tairn's voice simmered low, a growl that hadn't fully faded since she'd spoken those words.I know. And he threatened this kingdom.I know that too.I brushed a strand of hair away from her face, memorizing the shape of her features in the dim candlelight, the same way I had every night since nearly losing her. Whatever waited beyond these walls, whoever this creature was who'd found his way into her dreams, he'd made one mistake already. He'd shown himself, however briefly, however deliberately. That gave me something to work with.I pre

  • Bound To The Lycan King    CHAPTER 87: They're Coming

AYLIN'S POV "Try reaching for your other powers the way you reached for the healing," Iliana said, for what felt like the twentieth time."I'm trying.""Maybe picture something ," Kaelen offered, entirely too cheerful for someone standing safely off to the side. "Like you enjoy. Concentration helps.""I'm concentrating, Kaelen.""Have you tried breathing through it?" Seraphine added. "Sometimes when I need to shift, I focus on my breath.....""I'm breathing." My jaw tightened. "I'm breathing, I'm concentrating, I'm picturing things, I'm doing every single thing all of you keep suggesting, and none of it is working."Hours had passed since the healing had worked, hours of standing in the same spot trying to summon anything else, and my body ached with a kind of exhaustion that had nothing to do with physical exertion. Every attempt fizzled out into nothing. Every suggestion from the small crowd gathered around me only tightened the knot forming behind my ribs."Maybe try channeling yo

  • Bound To The Lycan King    CHAPTER 86: Powers

AYLIN'S POV Lucien's hand stayed wrapped around mine as we walked down toward the training grounds, morning light cutting long shadows across the courtyard. The moment we stepped into view, every head turned toward us at once.I felt my face heat, certain it was the hand-holding drawing the attention."Why is everyone staring?" I murmured, mostly to myself.Lucien only smirked before crossing the yard, leaving me standing there with the full weight of dozens of eyes still fixed on me.The staring didn't stop even after Lucien left to meet Terak near the sparring ring. Guards. Servants. Werewolves I'd never even met before, all of them watching me with an expression I couldn't quite name.Seraphine reached me first, pulling me into a hug so tight it nearly knocked the breath out of me. "I'm so happy for you.""Uh. Why?"She pulled back, grinning. "I can smell Lucien all over you."My stomach dropped. "Seraphine!""What? I'm just stating facts." She tilted her head, entirely too please

  • Bound To The Lycan King    CHAPTER 85: An Affirmation Of Love

AYLIN'S POV Neither of us spoke for a long moment.Lucien stared deep into my eyes, like he still didn't quite trust that I wouldn't vanish the second he looked away. When he reached me, he took my face in both hands, thumbs brushing gently along my cheekbones."I thought I'd lost you," he said quietly. "More than once tonight. More than once this entire month.""I'm here.""I know." His voice caught. "I keep having to remind myself of that."I covered his hands with mine, holding them against my face, feeling the slight tremor still running through him even now."You went through it with me," I said. "Whatever happened in that room. I felt you there. Not just beside me. Inside it, somehow.""I felt everything you felt." His forehead dropped to rest against mine. "Every fear you've carried since the night I found you. I understand things now I never could have asked you to explain.""I'm sorry you had to feel all of that.""Don't be." His hands slid down to rest at my waist. "I'd rat

  • Bound To The Lycan King    CHAPTER 84: Preparation For What Is To Come

AYLIN'S POV "What could you possibly mean?" Lucien's brow furrowed, his hand still wrapped around mine."The vampires." I made myself say it plainly, even though the words felt heavier out loud than they had inside my own head. "They're coming. They want blood, violence, something I don't fully understand yet. But it's them behind everything. The harvesting, the attacks. All of it.""How do you know all this?" Terak asked, his arms crossed, skepticism written plainly across his face."I was in a coma." I met his gaze. "I had a conversation with the Moon Goddess herself.""No shit." Kaelen's eyes went wide. "You actually spoke to her? The real Moon Goddess?""Yes."Seraphine's elbow found his ribs before he could say anything else."Ow. What?""She's the Moon Goddess Incarnate," Seraphine said, exasperated. "Of course she spoke with her. Literally her namesake."Kaelen rubbed his side, muttering something under his breath I chose not to catch.Seraphine's expression shifted, curiosity
