Maya's POV:

The grandfather clock in the living room had just struck eleven-thirty while I stood at the wide window, with the curtains balled in my fists as I stared down the moonlit drive until my eyes burned. Behind me the roast I’d spent the whole afternoon coaxing into tenderness sat cold on the long oak table, candles guttered to stubs, and wax hardened into little white puddles that looked too much like tears I refused to shed.

I had changed the linens twice, rearranged the silverware three times, and still the head chair remained empty. Every time my knees bent toward the couch, something yanked me back to the window, hoping that his car would appear any second because had looked me dead in the eye this morning and said that he would be back on time and I believed him.

“Where are you?” I muttered under my breath as I paced around the polished floorboards with my bare feet until headlights finally cut the dark a quarter past midnight and my breath snagged.

I smoothed my dress with shaking hands and stepped into the foyer just as the front door swung open and Declan filled the doorway, shoulders straining the dark jacket, carrying the sharp scent of lavender. His hair was rumpled, like he’d dragged his fingers through it a dozen times and he avoided my gaze as he shut the door with a click.

“Where have you been?” The question tore out of me before I could stop myself and he paused, keys still dangling from his fingers. “Work.”

“Work?” I echoed, my voice cracking right down the middle. Then I took another step, cold tiles biting the soles of my feet. “Declan, today is our fifth anniversary and I had begged you to come home for a dinner I spent hours…” My throat sealed shut as I flung a hand toward the dining room, toward the meal I couldn’t even name anymore.

He let out a short breath through his nose, almost bored. “We aren’t doing the public show this year, Maya. There’s no reason to pretend.”

The floor tilted under me as I stared at the man who had always offered me a polite half-smile over breakfast, who had eaten every plate I set in front of him without complaint, who had sat through awkward pack-business talk and never once raised his voice.

He had never spoken to me like this. Never!

My lips parted, but nothing came out instead the words he’d dropped before our wedding echoed in my head. “Don’t expect love from me.” He'd said and I nodded then because what else does a girl from the poorest edge of the pack do when the Alpha picks her?

But over the years, the way his hand held my waist for the cameras, I had worn that warning thinner and thinner until I let myself believe it might not be true. Tonight I had planned to hand him the truth anyway now I was grateful the words had stayed locked behind my teeth.

“Declan.” I called out as he turned toward the stairs and he stopped but didn’t turn around. “Is this because Samantha’s back?” I asked. “Don’t start.” He said, but I persisted.

“For days you’ve barely been home and every time I confront you, I receive the same excuse about work. But Alphas don’t vanish into offices, Declan. They dial into meetings from the study and you’ve done it for years but the moment you brought her and that six-year-old boy back, you suddenly had work to do.”

He said nothing but I couldn’t stop because the pain had been stacking for weeks. “You’re pathetic, you know that? Running back to a woman who walked away from you. Who had a child with someone else while you sat here waiting like some fool…”

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.” He snapped. “Samantha married that man because she had no choice. She has always loved me but she broke our bond because she had no choice.”

He stared at me for one long, awful second, chest heaving, then spun on his heel and strode down the hall. The study door clicked shut behind him while I stood frozen in the foyer until my legs simply gave up. Then I climbed the stairs on numb feet, the dress dragging behind me like chains.

In our bedroom I left the lights off and perched on the edge of the mattress, ears straining for the sound of his footsteps coming back but the study door never opened. So, I curled onto my side, dress and all, and buried my face in the pillow that still held the faintest trace of him. The tears came then, soaking the linen until it stuck to my cheek and I cried until my ribs felt bruised, until my throat scraped raw, and until exhaustion finally dragged me under.

Once morning light slipped through the curtains, I woke up with eyes swollen shut and laid there staring at the empty side of the bed. “I have to try harder. I will smile until my cheeks ache, and I will be the Luna he needs until he finally realizes that he loves me.”

Forcing a smile onto my face, I pushed myself up, splashed cold water on my face until the redness faded, and pulled on a cream blouse and dark jeans. Then I made my way to the kitchen where the maids moved around quietly. Seeing that the dining table had been cleared, I yanked open the refrigerator and started hauling out last night’s ruined dinner, from the congealed roast, to the limp vegetables, and the untouched cake.

One by one I dropped them into the trash and although the smell of cold gravy turned my stomach, I kept going until the bin was full and my hands stopped trembling. Then I prepared breakfast with the maids in silence. When the plates were arranged on the tray, I turned to one of the maids when the front doorbell rang through the house.

The younger maid hurried to answer it and I followed a few steps behind, wiping my hands on a dish towel as the door swung open and Victoria stood on the threshold, suitcase at her feet, traveling coat still buttoned tight to her throat. She looked exactly as she had the day she left three months ago, elegant, cold, and disappointed.

My stomach dropped straight through the floor but I forced my mouth into a smile anyway. “Mother. You’re back. We weren’t expecting…”

Her gaze slid over me like I was furniture she’d already decided to replace and a scoff slipped from her lips as she brushed past me and headed straight up the stairs, while I stood there with the dish towel twisted tight in my fists.

Why now? After months of sweet, blessed silence, why today? I swallowed the question, turned, and decided I would fetch Declan myself to tell him that his mother was here. I walked down the corridor to the study, and saw the door was slightly ajar with voices drifting out.

“Is it true? Are you involved with that woman again?” I heard Victoria ask “How did you even know?” Declan pressed and I pressed my back to the wall, hardly daring to breathe.

Victoria remained silent so Declan asked. “Did you have the maids spy on me again?”

“I had to because you never tell me.” Victoria replied, then she sighed. “Five years ago you went behind my back and married that useless, barren girl from the slums. Now you’re sniffing around your ex who already has a six-year-old by another man.”

My hand flew to my mouth as the word barren sliced straight through me, lodging somewhere deep and hollow where I had hoped, month after month, that this time would finally be different.

“The child is mine.” Declan declared and the floor vanished beneath my feet.

Maya's POV“Cassian?" I called out as I marched through the corridors.I couldn't wait for three hours. Not after Raphael had told me that the wedding was no more.A wedding that I knew Cassian looked forward to more than me.When I got to his study, I pushed the doors wide open without even knocking on the door.Inside the room was Cassian who was seated behind his desk, and Beta Jasper who was standing across from him.Clearly, I had walked in on something that was happening, but I didn't care.A few months earlier, I wouldn't have dared to even do that, but a lot had changed.Including the fact that I was now comfortable with walking in the room the way that I did, knowing full well that nothing was going to happen to me.Cassian didn't even look at me, while Jasper was turning around to face me.I could tell that he was about to tell me to come back later, the same time that I had been told by Raphael to look for Cassian.“I need to talk to you," I said confidently as I looked rig

Maya's POV“Pardon me Miss Maya, I seem to have forgotten my manners.I'm not usually around people," he cut me in, as he looked down and seemed to have come to the realization that he was drenched in blood. At that moment, my heart was literally in my ass, and I was ready to make a run for it."I was summoned by Alpha Cassian, however I have just come from the dungeons as well.I apologize for my appearance,” he added with a subtle bow and silence.Part of me felt like he was waiting for me to assure him that everything was okay. But honestly, it wasn't.I was only a few minutes away from walking down the aisle to my wedding to Cassian, and right at my door was a menacing and imposing figure that looked like he had torn through half of the pack to get to me.“I'll step away and go change if that will make this any better," he suggested, signaling and looking down the hall as if to tell me that all I had to do was shake my head. That would have made me more comfortable, but there were

Maya's POVThey say that love conquers all.I was starting to become a believer as I looked at myself in the mirror. The person that was looking back was not the same Maya that arrived in Moonclaw. If you were to tell me that I would be dressed in one of the most beautiful gowns that I had ever laid my eyes on, and about to walk down the aisle to get married to Cassian, I would have told you that you were lying. Not only that, I would have even slapped you across the face for making such a damning accusation. There was no universe that I saw myself even being on the same page as Cassian.Yet, there I was, about to become his wife and Luna to Moonclaw.“You planted these seeds years ago," I said to myself, seeing myself as the little girl that I used to be.The same little girl that didn't listen to my father and wandered further than I should've, till I met the young boy in the dungeons.“The day you decided to speak to him, and become the first person that showed him any form of comp

Jasper's POV“Cassian, you need to rethink this," I said to him as I watched him pace up and down in his own study.Word was yet to get out, because he had chosen to tell me first.“Rethink what? Marrying Maya? My mate, and the woman I want to spend the rest of my life with?" He questioned as he came to a subtle stop. There was no stopping him, but I needed to try.“I know that there's no way you're going to call off the wedding; but at least rethink about how fast you're rushing it," I responded, knowing full well that he wasn't going to take that kindly. Before he could say anything else, I jumped and went ahead to say, "She only confessed her feelings today, don't you think having the wedding in three days is a bit too sudden?”More fuel to the flame. He completely stopped and turned to look at me, and I could see the clear stance that he was on."Too sudden? I've been searching and waiting for this day for years Jasper.Out of all people, you've been the one who stood by my side a

Maya's POVCassian's eyes shone with a different kind of light. He looked at me with an even gentler stare and for the first time ever since I laid my eyes on him, I swear he was blushing. His cheeks started to turn red, and this time, he wasn't even trying to hide it.He kept looking at me, and the words finally slipped out of his mouth,“You've learnt to love me," My heart skipped a beat, because I was almost certain that I was never going to hear those words while in Moonclaw. For the longest time, I was convinced that I was trapped there, forever. That Cassian was never going to let me go, and I would have to find a reason not to go insane because I was never going to leave his pack. And not even months after he took me, I was standing across from him and questioning whether I actually developed feelings for him.“I don't want to say that it's the same as yours," I tried to defend myself, as I was looking for a better way to phrase it.I expected that to deter Cassian and make hi

Maya's POVMirabelle's words bothered me for some days, and no matter how much I tried to find flaws in her logic, I just couldn't find it.The more I tried to push away any thoughts that were brought around by our conversation, the more I realized that she was right. If I didn't have any feelings for Cassian, I wouldn't have been doing what I was doing. She didn't miss a beat when she went ahead to tell me that I was the only person that could walk into Cassian's study even if he was in a serious meeting, and he would somehow manage to give me his time.At first I thought she lost her plot and was proving that Cassian was the one obsessed with me more than I was with him, only for her to ask me if I would have done that within the first few days of me joining the pack.It dawned on me that not only was I becoming comfortable, but I had already settled in Moonclaw.Cassian was no longer the big bad wolf that scared the shit out of me, but the man that I was comfortable going on dates

Maya's POVI couldn't stop him. After being able to stop him from killing a maid before, and gouging the eyes of his men, I couldn't stop him from killing her.He did it with absolutely no remorse or guilt.Cassian stood there and stared right at me as he wiped her blood on a cloth he was handed by

  • Bound To The Night Reaper   Chapter 49

Maya's POVFor a second, I thought Cassian had lost his damn mind.Offering me up to the same person who tried to kill me before like that, wasn't what I expected to come out of his mouth. The maid, on the other hand, shifted her eyes from him to me.And then, I felt her composure change. For someo

Maya's POVTwo days passed since I woke up, and everything was being served to me on a silver platter. From morning till evening, I had maids round the clock to check on me, and the doctor was literally a ring away.Only once did my headaches get worse to the point where the painkillers she had giv

  • Bound To The Night Reaper   Chapter 47

Maya's POVI was shocked when I heard him mentioning a fire.As far as I could remember, I didn't have any memory of any fire when we stayed in Moonclaw. It was mostly memories about me sneaking around the pack, and spending time with the boy in the dungeons."There was a fire?" I asked my father,
